A day at the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo
From Persian fallow deer to blind shrimp, the Tisch Family Zoological Gardens is a world leader is conserving rare species.
The Asian lion, Syrian brown bear, Nile crocodile and Persian fallow deer are among the animals mentioned in the Bible that you can see at Jerusalem's Tisch Family Zoological Gardens -- otherwise known as the Biblical Zoo.
The Biblical Zoo is involved in conservation initiatives regarding many species that were mentioned in the Bible, says Nicole Wexler, director of development.
The Persian fallow deer story is very special because they were thought to be extinct for many years until a small family was found in the mountains in Iran and it was quite a dramatic story because they were brought to Israel on the very last El Al flight and we're presently reintroducing them into the wild at two sites: one in the north and one here in the Jerusalem hills.
The zoo attracts more than 750,000 visitors a year and not only features biblical animals but many more as well.
A program that we're very excited about is the cutting-edge breeding program for the blind shrimp, Wexler says. The blind shrimp is a small, blind crustacean that is found in only one spring in the Sea of Galilee and it is found nowhere else in the world.

Jerusalem Zoo
The news always says that Israel is a crowded place but that didn't seem apparent as we drove towards Israel zoo and spent the day there. It's not the biggest zoo around, but it is themed to give a good cross representation of animals from different parts of the world. We particularly liked the arc section.
Unfortunately the 2 café's in the more interesting parts of the zoo were closed and so we had to make do with the junkfood shop near the ticket office. The zoo itself was fairly quiet, although there was a school group going round as well.
This probably isn't the attraction that Israel is famous for but it was well worth a visit. I would recommend that if you go in off-peak season that you take your own lunch.
6th graders from East and West Jerusalem learn at the Zoo
For a few months, 6th graders learnt together Spoken Hebrew and Arabic on the theme of Animals. the last meeting took place at the Zoo. Each pair of pupils presented their animals in their partner's language. Please notice the equal status between the girls reflected by the support they provide to each other.
