In this video, I show you everything you need to know in order to use the Tokyo Metro System effectively. It can be complex and intimidating if it's your first time in Tokyo, so hopefully this video will simplify it for you, from buying tickets to finding your destination. Don't be scared of Tokyo Subway! It's probably one of the world's most efficient transportation systems, and can get you anywhere! This is the first video of my Japan Guide series, so stay tuned for more tips and tricks for traveling/moving to Tokyo, Japan!
I have people asking how to calculate their fare for a specific trip, you can use Google Maps which tells you the single ticket fare, so you will pay 5-10Yen less if you are using an IC card. You can also use Tokyo Metro's calculator which tells you all different fares but only available for Tokyo Metro lines (so excluding TOEI/JR lines):

TIPS FOR SAVING $$$
1. Stick to Tokyo Metro lines only - these 9 lines should get you to all touristic destinations (some may require slightly longer transit time, but it won't be much longer than the more expensive route)
2. Avoid buses if you are just traveling - they are expensive and doesn't provide free transfer to metro
3. Buy a combo pass if you arrive from Narita or Haneda Airport, they can save you a lot of money. More info:
4. Group together sights that can only be accessed by subway within the time period limited by the 24h/48h/72h metro pass. Go to sights that are accessible by foot on other days

Guys, I've decided that I'm going to take a more direct and honest approach with you, my viewers. And part of that real talk has to do with something most Youtubers are not that willing to talk about - money.
The thing with Youtube ad-revenue is that it's a complete joke, and the only way smaller channels can earn an income worth the time spent making videos is with lots of low quality content, or sponsored content. I dont wanna play that game. I want to make the best videos possible for you, my viewers, but making good videos takes a ton of time, effort and money.
Thus, I started Patreon to help with the costs of producing these videos. There's a few of costs like: travelling around Tokyo, entrance fees and the cost of my time (hundreds of hours scripting, shooting, editing).
A lot of my fellow YouTuber friends are using Patreon so that their audience can support them directly. I would LOVE to make working on this channel my full-time job, so If you feel that my content is worth it then please have a look at my Patreon page and help me grow Tokyo Drew. Let's make awesome vids together:

Tokyo Metro Chaos: Japan, Adventures
The Tokyo metro system is one of the best and most crowded in the world. After living in Prague and Shanghai, two polar opposites when it comes to metro manners, I was worried about getting literally stuffed onto the metro in Tokyo. Although this particular ride was packed to the maximum, everyone was super polite, didn't push at all and were quiet and respectful the whole time! We were the ones laughing and making videos and being rude. This is very different than Shanghai where people won't even wait to let others off the metro before pushing their way in... With 179 stations, nine lines and over 2.3 billion users each year, the Tokyo Metro is the heart of Tokyo’s public transport system. This film goes behind the scenes to explore the mind-set, skill and technology behind its astonishing reliability and punctuality. The Tokyo Metro is so punctual that people set their watches by the arrival of the trains; if a train is more than a minute late, the driver has to make a personal apology. This film explores the reasons behind the Metro’s reputation for running on time, to reveal a long-established culture focused on avoiding failure through contingency planning for any event – from terrorism to earthquakes - and the introduction of new technology to improve safety and systematic preventative maintenance. However, we reveal the key to the Metro’s efficiency is exhaustive training for its station staff and drivers, who are trained to drive at precise speeds even if the technology fails.

morning rush hours on many lines in japan
morning rush hours on many lines in japan
In Japan, when pushers were first brought in at Shinjuku Station, they were called passenger arrangement staff (旅客整理係 ryokaku seiri gakari), and were largely made up of students working part-time; currently, station staff and/or part-time workers fill these roles during morning rush hours on many lines. In 1975, oshiya packed commuters into rush-hour trains that were filled to an average of 221 percent of designed capacity

Tokyo Metro Co., Ltd. (東京メトロ Tōkyō Metoro), commonly known as Tokyo Metro, is a rapid transit system in Tokyo, Japan. While it is not the only rapid transit system operating in Tokyo, it has the higher ridership among the two operators: in 2014, the Tokyo Metro had an average daily ridership of 6.84 million passengers, while the other system, the Toei Subway, had 2.85 million average daily rides. The company replaced the Teito Rapid Transit Authority (帝都高速度交通営団 Teito Kōsokudo Kōtsū Eidan), commonly known as Eidan or TRTA, on April 1, 2004.
