Madeira Beach John's Pass Florida in HD
english / deutsch :
On the first day of our tour we drove north along the Suncoast. Between Madeira Beach and Treasure Island was a big drawbridge and there the Village of John's Pass. The traditional yearly Food Festival was just held. We stoped, and enjoyed the weather at tropical beauty of the village area and along the Boardwalk. A wonderful center for day trippers and tourists, as you can see in the clip, have fun looking!

Places to see in ( St Petersburg - USA )
Places to see in ( St Petersburg - USA )
St. Petersburg is a city on Florida's gulf coast, part of the Tampa Bay area. It's known for its pleasant weather (hence its “Sunshine City” nickname), making it popular for golfing, boating, fishing and beachgoing. Its waterfront parks host the Dali Museum, featuring surrealist works of art; the Museum of Fine Arts, with works ranging from ancient to contemporary; and Mahaffey Theater, home of the Florida Orchestra.
Saint Petersburg is located at the base of the Tampa Bay peninsula in Pinellas County, Florida, and enjoys a more subdued social atmosphere than its larger cousin, Tampa. The city has tried to characterize the downtown as an arts and entertainments destination and you will find no shortage of arts and crafts stores, galleries, and museums along with cafes and boutique food shops all within a couple blocks of the Tampa Bay waterfront. With water on three sides of the city, St. Pete is a superb location for fishing, sailing, and wandering beaches.
Saint Petersburg was founded by John C. Williams from Detroit, Michigan, who purchased the land in 1876. The town began with the help of Peter Demens, who was instrumental in bringing a railroad connection there in 1888. Saint Petersburg was named after the Saint Petersburg in Russia, the birthplace of Peter Demens. A local legend says that John C. Williams and Peter Demens flipped a coin to see who would have the honor of naming the city. Peter Demens won and named the city after his birthplace, while John C. Williams named the first hotel after his birthplace, Detroit. The Detroit Hotel still exists downtown, but it was converted into condos in 2002.
The city publishes the free Downtown St.Petersburg Guide & Map booklet, updated each season, that contains maps, trolley routes, and listings for hundreds of museums, events, restaurants, & hotels along with coupons. You can find the guide in dispensers throughout downtown and in many businesses.
Long known as little more than a bawdy spring-break party town and a retirement capital, St Petersburg is now forging a new name for itself as a culturally savvy southern city. Spurred on by awe-inspiring downtown murals, a revitalized historic district and the stunning Dalí Museum, the downtown energy is creeping up Central Ave, spawning sophisticated restaurants, craft breweries, farmers markets and artsy galleries, all of which are attracting a younger professional crowd and a new wave of culturally curious travelers.

Jacksonville is the largest city in the U.S. state of Florida by population and the largest city by area in the contiguous United States. It is the county seat of Duval County, with which the city government consolidated in 1968. Consolidation gave Jacksonville its great size and placed most of its metropolitan population within the city limits; with an estimated population in 2012 of 836,507, it is the most populous city proper in Florida and the Southeast, and the 12th most populous in the United States. Jacksonville is the principal city in the Jacksonville metropolitan area, with a population of 1,345,596 in 2010.
Jacksonville is in the First Coast region of northeast Florida and is centered on the banks of the St. Johns River, about 25 miles (40 km) south of the Georgia state line and about 340 miles (550 km) north of Miami. The Jacksonville Beaches communities are along the adjacent Atlantic coast. The area was originally inhabited by the Timucua people, and in 1564 was the site of the French colony of Fort Caroline, one of the earliest European settlements in what is now the continental United States. Under British rule, settlement grew at the narrow point in the river where cattle crossed, known as Wacca Pilatka to the Seminole and Cowford to the British. A platted town was established there in 1822, a year after the United States gained Florida from Spain; it was named after Andrew Jackson, the first military governor of the Florida Territory and seventh President of the United States.
Harbor improvements since the late 19th century have made Jacksonville a major military and civilian deep-water port. Its riverine location facilitates two U.S. Navy bases and the Port of Jacksonville, Florida's third largest seaport. Significant factors in the local economy include services such as banking, insurance, healthcare and logistics. As with much of Florida, tourism is also important to the Jacksonville area, particularly tourism related to golf. In 2010, Jacksonville was listed as a high sufficiency world city in the World Cities Study Group's inventory, ranking alongside cities such as Liverpool and Las Vegas. People from Jacksonville are known as Jacksonvillians or Jaxons.
The area of the modern city of Jacksonville has been inhabited for thousands of years. On Black Hammock Island in the national Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve, a University of North Florida team discovered some of the oldest remnants of pottery in the United States, dating to 2500 BC. In the 16th century, the beginning of the historical era, the region was inhabited by the Mocama, a coastal subgroup of the Timucua people. At the time of contact with Europeans, all Mocama villages in present-day Jacksonville were part of the powerful chiefdom known as the Saturiwa, centered around the mouth of the St. Johns River. One early map shows a village called Ossachite at the site of what is now downtown Jacksonville; this may be the earliest recorded name for that area.
European explorers first arrived in the area 1562, when French Huguenot explorer Jean Ribault charted the St. Johns River. In 1564, René Goulaine de Laudonnière established the first European settlement, Fort Caroline, on the St. Johns near the main village of the Saturiwa. On September 20, 1565, a Spanish force from the nearby Spanish settlement of St. Augustine attacked Fort Caroline, and killed nearly all the French soldiers defending it.The Spanish renamed the fort San Mateo, and following the ejection of the French, St. Augustine's position as the most important settlement in Florida was solidified.
Spain ceded Florida to the British in 1763 after the French and Indian War, and the British soon constructed the King's Road connecting St. Augustine to Georgia. The road crossed the St. Johns River at a narrow point, which the Seminole called Wacca Pilatka and the British named the Cow Ford, both names ostensibly reflecting the fact that cattle were brought across the river there.Britain ceded control of the territory back to Spain in 1783, after its defeat in the American Revolutionary War, and the settlement at the Cow Ford continued to grow. After Spain ceded the Florida Territory to the United States in 1821, American settlers on the north side of the Cow Ford decided to plan a town, laying out the streets and plats. They soon named the town Jacksonville, after Andrew Jackson. Led by Isaiah D. Hart, residents wrote a charter for a town government, which was approved by the Florida Legislative Council on February 9, 1832.
During the American Civil War, Jacksonville was a key supply point for hogs and cattle

Big Tree Park near Sanford, FL home of the Senator (1488 BC - Jan 16, 2012)
This is Big Tree Park just south of Sanford, FL off US 17-92. It's home to the oldest Cypress Tree in the USA. The Senator is over 3,500 years old and it's sister tree Lady Liberty (formerly known as The General) is over 2,000 years old. The Senator began life not long after Stonehenge was built and it was alive from that time until recently when it burned from inside it's hollowed trunk and fell over early in the morning on January 16, 2012. The Senator as it was named was alive and well at 1,000 years old when the Roman Empire was at it's height and when Jesus walked the earth. It also saw the Spanish Conquistadors exploring the new land called LaFlorida, which we now call Florida. They were looking for the fabled Fountain of Youth and ElDorado, the fabled lost city of gold.
The tree was named for the Florida State Senator Moses Overstreet who donated the tree and the land around it to Seminole County for use as a park in 1927. The tree was originally 165ft tall but a hurricane toppled the top 47 feet of it in 1925, reducing its height to 118ft tall. Arson was ruled out and so it's believed a lightning strike hit the inside of the hollowed out trunk several months ago which smoldered until erupting in flames on that fateful day. I hope you enjoy this video. I'm happy that I got the video but sad to see it gone now.
Update Feb 28, 2012:
It's now officially ruled as arson. Sara Barnes, a 26 year old female, was arrested today in her apartment in Winter Park, FL. She was charged with arson, along with several drug related charges including possession with intent to sell drugs which includes methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphanelia. She confessed to starting the fire so she could see what she was doing while taking drugs. The fire quickly got out of control and she fled the scene but not before she took some photos of the fire with her cellphone. That cellphone as well as her laptop were confiscated along with the drugs that were found in her apartment. The woman never called 911 to report the fire but she did tell some people that she started the fire that cost us all a natural treasure.

Stories from the Apalachicola: An Endangered River
WFSU presents a production of the Florida State University College of Communication and Information. Stories from the Apalachicola is the result of an interdisciplinary effort called the Apalachicola River Project.
Students in Digital Media Production, Media and Communication Studies, English and Environmental Science and Policy partnered with Apalachicola Riverkeeper, a nonprofit group dedicated to preserving and restoring the Apalachicola River, its bay and watersheds. The group provided boats and kayaks so students could navigate the river to collect water and soil samples, record video and write stories about the effects of reduced water flow on the oyster industry, fishing and the delicate ecosystem.
Students interviewed oystermen, beekeepers, legislators, historians, biologists, and the Riverkeeper, each with their own perspective on this critical time for the Apalachicola. Freshwater flows on the Apalachicola have been altered for decades, as the Army Corps of Engineers has restricted flows during droughts and modified the river channel create a shipping lane for barges. This has caused a decline in tupelo and other trees in the floodplain forest. And in 2012, during the lowest flow period ever recorded for the river, the Apalachicola Bay oyster fishery crashed.
Communities along the river and bay look towards a future where the river might not provide for them as it did in generations past.
For more information on the Apalachicola River Project, visit their official website:
For ongoing coverage of the Apalachicola River and Bay system, visit the WFSU Ecology Blog:
Did you find Stories from the Apalachicola informative? Did it motivate you to want to help the river and bay? Let the filmmakers know in this short survey:
