Treasurers House - York
A brief look at the famous haunted Treasurer's House in York.
THE WHY FILES - The Treasurer's House, York (L!VE TV, 1999)
The Why Files was a smashing cable TV programme. I managed to record hours of the best ghost stories on it to VHS before the channel shut down in 2000. Here's one of the UK's most famous tales of a haunting in York. The cellar is now open for public tours and is recommended (though I was able to go down there years before it was opened to the public!)
The Treasurer's House, York - at Christmas
This video footage was filmed in November 2016. Unfortunately, the colours have not come out so well. However, I was pleased with my friend's filming so I decided to use it. Many thanks to Mark Davies for allowing me to use this. Also, I'm very grateful to the National Trust for taking care of these wonderful historic buildings. The music used is: Charpentier: Christmas Motet - Suite de la nuit.

Places to see in ( Yorkshire - UK ) Treasurer's House
The Treasurer's House in York, North Yorkshire, England is an historic house owned by the National Trust who also maintain its garden. It is located directly to the North of York Minster. The first Treasurer for York Minster was appointed in 1091, but all that remains of his original house is an external wall. The Treasurer was controller of the finances of the Minster but also entertained important guests, which is why he was provided with a grand residence.
The residence served in this capacity until 1547, when the Reformation of the English Church brought the job of Treasurer to an end and the house passed into the hands of the Archbishops of York. Thomas Young, Archbishop between 1561 and 1568, and his descendants are responsible for the structure of house as it is today. In the early 17th century the Young family added the symmetrical front and almost entirely rebuilt the house. In 1617, the Treasurer’s House played host to royalty when Sir George Young entertained King James I. The house then passed through a number of private owners.
Treasurer's House was restored to its present state by Frank Green, a wealthy local industrialist, between 1897 and 1930. The house and its contents were given to the National Trust in 1930, when its owner retired and moved away from York.
Treasurer's House was built directly over one of the main Roman roads leading out of Roman York to the North. During major structural changes, carried out by Green, four Roman column bases were uncovered, one of which remains in-situ in the cellar and one of which was used as a base for a modern set of columns in the main hall.
Treasurer's House is open to the public for a small admission fee, and free to members of the National Trust. The garden and Below Stairs Café are free to enter. Cellar and attic tours are available, depending on the time of year.

Harry Martindale experience in the cellar of the treasurer's house York
This video was filmed in the cellar of the Treasurer's House in York, England. The date of the filming was tuesday 14th March 2012. The narrator recounts Harry Martindale's experience when as an apprentice Harry was sent to the cellar to begin work and within minutes Harry saw Roman soldiers appear in the cellar. Apologies for the poor light in the video. The only available light came from an electric light. No other lighting was permissible. The narrator is a volunteer worker for the National Trust and in my opinion and in the opinion of the others in the group, he did a superb presentation in recounting Harry Martindale's experience. The cellar tour is well worth a visit as is the rest of the property. The staff are a great set of people, helpful and friendly.

YORK WALK | A walk around York Minster ????????????
YORK WALK | A walk around York Minster ????????????
A short walk through historic York streets to York Minster for a quick look around the great York Minster and the statue of Constantine The Great
We start this video walking tour of York on Bootham and head up towards York Minster via the York City walls and stop at the Roman Fortress plaque that is marked as follows:
ROMAN FORTRESS
This plaque marks the site of the Porta Principalis Dextra or North Western Gate of the Roman Fortress of which the foundations as rebuilt circa A.D.300 lie just below ground
We go through the City Walls onto High Petergate and past The Hole In The Wall pub and the Three Legged Mare.
As we get to the top end of High Petergate we get our first real full glimpse of the majestic York Minster. A truly awe inspiring sight.
Continuing our walk round York we reach Precentors Court and the West Entrance to York Minster where we stop to take a closer look at the Minster walls.
After a short look outside we head inside York Minster itself to have a quick look inside this amazing Cathedral.
Inside you can see the incredible nave, the stained glass windows and underground there is the crypt's to explore, and if you visit York Minster that's a must do adventure.
Rather than talk through the history of this York MinsterTour we'd rather just watch the video as we come out of the Minster and on to the bronze statue of Constantine The Great.
Constantine The Great was proclaimed the Emperor of Rome a short distance away from York Minster in the year 306.
If you're looking for things to do in York then a visit to York Minster is an absolute must.
