A really interesting temple in Tsukiji near the oldest fish market in Tokyo. It was destroyed in the Great Kanto Earthquake. Rebuilt in the 1930s in a very unique architectural style. Very different from what you come to expect from a Japanese temple, the architecture is very heavily influenced by South Asia.

Tsukiji Hongwanji Temple 築地本願寺 - is a Jodo Shinshu Buddhist temple located in the Tsukiji district of Tokyo, Japan. The present Tsukiji Hongan-ji was built between 1931 and 1934. It's unique architecture is influenced by temples in South Asia. The temple is adjacent to Tsukiji Station on the Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line.

The original Tsukiji Honganji Temple, with an Indian-style exterior, was built in 1617 near Asakusa, but was burnt down in a huge fire that swept through Edo (Tokyo) in 1657. The Temple was then rebuilt on the present site, but destroyed again by the Great Tokyo Earthquake of 1923. The current main building was built in 1934.The main building possesses a distinctive ambience not found in other Japanese temples, due to its variety of architectural styles. The design of the stone exterior was based on an ancient Indian style and combines Buddhist, Hindu and Islamic architectural styles in a complex manner. The columns and wide stairs of the Temple moreover are reminiscent of Greek and Roman architectural styles. Inside, Buddhist statues are placed on the altar in the same way as a Japanese temple, creating a solemn air. And at the back of the main building is a pipe organ made in the former West Germany. The main building, which fuses a myriad of cultures, is a building of great artistic value.

Tsukiji Hongan-ji (築地本願寺), sometimes archaically romanized Hongwan-ji, is a Jodo Shinshu Buddhist temple located in the Tsukiji district of Tokyo, Japan.
???? Tsukiji Bon Odori Festval - Tokyo / 築地本願寺納涼盆踊り
???? Tsukiji Hongan-ji Temple hosts an annual Bon Odori festival. Each year the event attracts visitors from the neighborhood, across the country, and even outside Japan.
The visitors are invited to form a circle around the scaffold set up in the temple grounds - it doubles as a bandstand where taiko drums and singers performs live - and dance to a medley of traditional Bon Odori songs.
Participants are free to dance in any costume of their choice, for many Japanese women and young girls, this is the perfect opportunity to wear their favorite Yukata. - Enjoy!

In 1923 (Taisho 12) in Tsukiji Honjyo, the main hall was burned down again due to the fire associated with the Great Kanto Earthquake. It looks like a temple in India.
