Redondo Beach, CA - Boardwalk, Veterans Memorial Park & Pier
Years before we ever visited I first heard the name Redondo Beach from Patti Smith's great, sad song of the same name, on her Horses album. This wonderful beach town has been an inspiration also in countless movies and TV shows. One of the best of so many magnificent beach towns in the L.A. area.
We began our stroll at the impressive and beautiful Veterans Memorial Park. Very serene and laid out in a way that you have the best ocean views from any seating area. There is the old library that is now a community center, along with a magnificent huge 120 year old fig tree next to it.
We then went left and began our beach walk on the southern end, heading northward to the pier, by way also of the boardwalk, It was a weekday for us but there were quite a few people anyway enjoying the fantastic, beautiful day.
Redondo Beach is one of 3 beach cities connected by the walkway known as The Strand. We visited the other 2 cities of Hermosa Beach and Manhattan Beach at another time; will also have a video coming up of that visit.
We won't soon forget this place and hope to return again to this Southern California beach jewel.
As is our custom, Ed did all of the camcorder video filming and narrations heard. I did all of the still photography, chose the music heard in the background, edited everything and uploaded to You Tube.
The song used was Golden Days by Topher Mohr and Alex Elena, from the free You Tube Audio Library.

THE HISTORY OF REDONDO BEACH
Before the Beginning...
1850 - California becomes the 31st state.
1854 - Manuel Dominguez sells Redondo's salt lake to Henry Allenson and William Johnson. Sale precipitates establishment of Pacific Salt Works.
1862 - Los Angeles merchant Francis Mellus acquires bankrupt salt works. Cycles of drought and floods ruin ranch economy.
1887 - Redondo Company buys 1,400 acres from Dominguez heirs. Land is bordered by Knob Hill, Herondo, Prospect, and the ocean. The name Redondo is derived from the round shape and amphitheater topography. State engineer William Hammond Hall conducts soundings off shore and discovers a deep canyon leading to Redondo's development as a port.
1888 - First Santa Fe excursion train arrives in Redondo. Iron pier is built at foot of Emerald Street. John C. Ainsworth and Robert R. Thompson acquire the Redondo Company.
1889 - Los Angeles County Supervisors grant Redondo Railway Company a franchise to operate.
1890 - Chautauqua Assembly is dedicated at Pacific Coast Highway and Diamond Street. Hotel Redondo opens on site later to become Veterans Park.
1892 - City of Redondo Beach is incorporated after citizens vote 177 to 10.
2001 - City of Redondo Beach official population is 63,261.

Early Squid Run in Redondo Beach
During the winter months hundreds and hundreds of market squid join in the Southern California waters to lay eggs. The squid die after mating and their bodies bring out many different predators. This video is taken very early in the process so we only saw a few squid. I will upload a video with more squid when conditions clear up and I can go out again. Stay tuned.
This night dive was at Vets Park in Redondo Beach, CA. The dive took place on January 4th at approximately 7:00pm. Aside from the breath taking squid we also saw an angel shark, a round ray, swimmer crab, target shrimp, and a few other native fish. Enjoy the video.
