Vikingsholm Mansion Tour | Emerald Bay Lake Tahoe CA
Vikingsholm Tour, Emerald Bay, Lake Tahoe, California: Trippin with Kev and Jess
Vikingsholm is a 38-room mansion on the shore of Emerald Bay at Lake Tahoe, in El Dorado County, California, U.S., and on the National Register of Historic Places. The Vikingsholm foundation was laid in 1928, but the building was constructed in 1929 by 200 workers. Vikingsholm was built by Mrs. Lora Josephine Knight as a summer home. Some parts of the structure contain no nails or spikes, as a result of old-fashioned construction methods. Most of the building was made from materials found at Lake Tahoe.
Mrs. Knight is primarily known for building Vikingsholm, but she and her husband were primary backers of Charles Lindbergh's non-stop solo flight across the Atlantic in 1927.
Vikingsholm, along with the Tea House on Fannette Island and Emerald Bay, is a part of Emerald Bay State Park. Emerald Bay has also been declared a National Natural Landmark. Tours are given of the American Craftsman Vikingsholm museum home for a nominal fee. (from Wikipedia) Jessica Lindeman
Hiking Lake Tahoe Emerald Bay Vikingsholm Castle
In August 2016 the On The Prowl Team went to Lake Tahoe and hiked down to Emerald Bay. We toured Vikingsholm Castle and then took kayaks out to the only island in Lake Tahoe, Fannette Island and hiked up to the Tea House. It was a great day of R & R. South Lake Tahoe, California - Emerald Bay State Park HD (2014)
Emerald Bay State Park is a state park of California, USA, preserving Lake Tahoe's Emerald Bay, a National Natural Landmark. Park features include Eagle Falls and Vikingsholm, a 38-room mansion that is considered one of the finest examples of Scandinavian architecture in the United States. The architect was Leonard Palme, who was hired by his aunt Laura Knight to design and build Vikingsholm. The park contains the only island in Lake Tahoe, Fannette Island. The park is accessible by California State Route 89 near the southwest shore of the lake. Emerald Bay is one of Lake Tahoe's most photographed and popular locations.
In 1969 Emerald Bay was recognized as a National Natural Landmark by the federal Department of the Interior. In 1994 California State Parks included the surrounding water of the bay as a part of the park, making Emerald Bay one of the first underwater parks of its type in the state, protecting the various wrecks and other items on the bay's bottom.
The 1,533-acre (620 ha) park was established in 1953. It is located directly south of D. L. Bliss State Park.
Summer temperatures at the park range from the low 40 °F (4 °C) at night to mid-70 °F (21 °C) during the day, and during the winter visitors will usually experience temperatures between 20 and 40 °F (−7 and 4 °C). During harsh winters the bay freezes over. The bay is about 1.7 miles (2.7 km) in length, and about two-thirds of a mile (1 km) wide at its widest point.

Let's Go To Vikingsholm
Nestled within tall cedars and pines and upon the shore of Emerald Bay sits this majestic Scandinavian summer house which was built for Lora Josephine Knight in 1929.
While driving on the Californian side of Lake Tahoe, you can park above and take a one-mile hike down towards the shore where tours during the summer months are offered to those who wish to see this well preserved mansion. You can also boat in and park along the shore, as well as visit Fanette Island, Tahoe's only island, to climb to the top and see Mrs. Knight's original tea cottage, the stone remains are still there.

On this Airstream Life vLog, we stop by a copse of aspens in between Kinds Beach & Truckee for Steve and Courtney's mom to take photos of the yellows and oranges. Absolutely beautiful! Then we all head down to Emerald Bay near South Lake Tahoe. We hike down the cliff with gorgeous views of Emerald Bay the whole way before ending up at Vikingsholm or a Scandinavian inspired castle along the water's edge. A really amazing place to visit! We highly recommend it!
