Grozny (Chech. Sölzha-GӀala - named after the river Sunzha (Chech. Sölzha) + gӀala “city”) is a city in the North Caucasus, in the south of Russia, the capital of the Chechen Republic, the center of the Grozny district. A city of republican significance, it is not part of the district, forming the city district the city of Grozny. The city is located on both banks of the Sunzha River. The city of military glory of Russia (since April 6, 2015).
One of the largest cities in the North Caucasus: second in terms of area and third in terms of population (297 137 people in 2018, which makes up 20.39% of the republic’s population).
Name of the city in Russian:
• 1818 - December 30, 1869 (according to the new style - January 11, 1870) - the Grozny fortress
• December 30, 1869 - the city of Grozny
• In the Chechen language: Sölzha-Gӏala
• In 1998-1999, the administration of the unrecognized Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, which controlled the city, renamed Grozny to Dzhokhar-Ghala (the city of Dzhokhar) in honor of the separatist leader Dzhokhar Dudayev.
In 2000, the Head of Chechnya, Akhmat Kadyrov, when they started talking about moving the capital to Gudermes, which was less destroyed by the war, said that Grozny would remain the capital of Chechnya. According to him, the whole history of Chechnya is closely connected with Grozny, and therefore the capital cannot be moved.
On October 1, 1991, the Nationwide Congress of the Chechen people under the leadership of Dzhokhar Dudayev announced the division of Chechen-Ingushetia into the sovereign Chechen Republic (the capital is Grozny) and the Ingush Republic as part of the RSFSR.
During the First Chechen War, battles fought around the building of the former Republican Committee of the Communist Party (Presidential Palace) in Grozny, January 1995. At the end of 1994 and at the end of 1999, the city was stormed by the armed forces of the Russian Federation, in August 1996 - by the combined forces of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria. During all these events, the city was severely damaged - it was practically destroyed; and including the central area of the city was completely destroyed.

RUSSIA: CHECHNYA: PREMIER PUTIN RALLIES TROOPS
Russian/Nat
Russian Premier Vladimir Putin rallied Russian troops in Chechnya on Wednesday as they closed in on the breakaway province's capital city of Grozny.
Putin declared that his troops would fulfill their task to the end, apparently contradicting earlier hints from the Kremlin that it does not plan to try to capture Grozny.
The Russian leader's visit to the battle front in Chechnya came just as Russian forces began pounding the outskirts of Grozny, and the roar of heavy artillery could be heard right across the city.
Russian troops entered Chechnya three weeks ago, since when they have slowly advanced from three directions but have stopped short of Grozny.
The success of the Chechnya campaign so far has been very popular with Russian voters, and with Putin expected to stand as President in next year's elections, the temptation to try to win an outright victory must be strong.
But many senior politicians - including one of Putin's predecessors as prime minister, Yevgeny Primakov, are calling for Russian troops not to move beyond northern Chechnya and to consolidate their position there.

Another Day Of Heavy Fighting Russia: Chechnya: Grozny - 1995
Grozny has been rocked by another day of heavy fighting - the ninth day of the Russian offensive to take the Chechen capital.
Artillery rounds were fired every few seconds and heavy machine gun fire was also heard.
Chechen officials believe that Moscow has changed tactics - depending more on heavy artillery fire and rockets rather than tanks.
Shells continue to rain down on the capital of the breakaway republic.
And although the fires in the presidential palace appear to have been put out, many other buildings are still ablaze.
Russian troops are now said to be positioned in a rough arc running from the north-west to the north-east of the palace.
And tank and paratroop units are trying to move in from near the central market to near the train station in an attempt to cordon off the palace.
Chechen government officials believe Russia has changed its tactics, depending more on heavy artillery and rockets rather than deploying tanks, which became easy targets in the early days of the battle for Grozny.
The new strategy appears to be aimed at beating back resistance near the presidential palace.
However, taking the city like this would require house-by-house fighting, something that could take weeks if not longer.
Despite the relentlessness of the Russian invasion, Chechen fighters continue to be moved into Grozny, to reinforce the resistance.
But the last few days of fighting seems to have taken its toll.
At the start of the fighting, Chechens used to sing and dance while the shells continued to fall down.
But on Sunday, the rebels stayed close to buildings and there were few smiles.
The fighting in the capital has also spread to surrounding villages, where Russian jets have inflicted heavy damage.
In Tsotsin, some 35 kilometres south-east of Grozny, a number of villagers were killed in aerial bombardments on Friday.
The dead have been laid out in the local mosque.
And the village school has been turned into a makeshift hospital.

Russia: Chechnya: OSCE Delegates Visit Grozny - 1995
Human rights delegates Monday compared Grozny to the German city of Dresden - destroyed by Allied bombers during World War Two.
Delegates returned to Moscow aghast at the carnage they witnessed in the Chechen capital.
One said the devastation was unbelievable.
Now the delegates - from the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe - are demanding a ceasefire.
The five person OSCE (Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe) delegation flew into the devastated Chechen capital Grozny on Sunday morning to investigate allegations of human rights abuses in the conflict.
Travelling in armoured personnel carriers (APCs) they toured the devastated city with Russian troops and saw the devastation caused by the six week long battle. They saw for themselves, the wrecked buildings and streets littered with the wreckage of burnt out tanks and cars.
They were shown the remains of Russian soldiers burnt alive in their vehicles, testimony to the brutality of the conflict. During the visit artillery shells and explosions were heard in the background, confirmation that the fighting is not yet over.
Further proof came from their visit to a Russian field hospital where the latest victim of a sniper attack was being treated.
At a press conference in Moscow this morning (30 January 1995) the delegation described their visit as a success and thanked the Russians for making it possible.
They said there were some signs of the mistreatment of Chechen prisoners. But the OSCE team was more shocked by the destruction of Grozny.
SOUNDBITE:
It's an enormous amount of devastation. Unbelievable. I've never seen anything like it in my life before. It's very similar to pictures one has seen of the bombing of Dresden after the war. Just street after street, block of flats after block of flats just totally destroyed, just totally destroyed.
SUPER CAPTION: Audrey Glover, Director OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights
The OSCE felt that the only way forward now was to cease all hostilities.
SOUNDBITE:
I would suggest that there needs to be a cease fire for humanitarian relief. Firstly, they've got to get the dead bodies out and secondly they should try and repair the hospitals. The hospitals are in a very bad state. And then also, of course, there should be more aid given. I think that the international relief organisations should be able to work more with the Russian authorities and get the refugees out.(fades out)

In Grozny the OSCE delegation also spoke to local residents and visited the ruins of the presidential palace.

RUSSIA: CHECHNYA: AUTHORITIES TO USE FORCE TO RESTORE ORDER
Nat/Sot
The Russian foreign minister has warned that Moscow will use whatever means necessary to restore order in Chechnya if peace talks break down.
Russian planes buzzed the Chechen capital and there were sporadic clashes today (Tuesday) as the stalemate between the Russian invasion force and Chechen fighters continues.
But the fighting did not halt a second day of peace talks in North Ossetia between Chechen government officials and Russian delegates.
The Itar-Tass news agency reported that Russian troops plan to seal off Grozny by the end of Tuesday.
Quoting military sources, it said the force would blockade the Chechen capital and disarm unlawful formations.
Moscow says the invasion is aimed at ending armed extremism in the breakaway republic, which declared independence from Russia in 1991.
In a display of strength, Russian jets buzzed Grozny Tuesday morning.
But despite the action, Kremlin officials insist there will be no assault on Grozny.
They also deny reports suggesting Russian planes bombed the city of 400-thousand people on Monday night.
And there were sporadic outbursts of gunfire throughout the day on the outskirts of Grozny.
At one point, Russian jets pounded the Russian Cossack village of Pervomaiskoye, just outside the capital.
Several rockets hit the village - helicopter gunships and at least four warplanes joined in the attack.
As the Russian forces advance, Chechen forces continue preparing for a possible violent confrontation.
They have been joined by numbers of volunteers, armed with assault rifles and rocket- propelled grenades.
Meanwhile, Kremlin officials have issued their first casualty report, saying nine Russian servicemen were killed and 14 wounded since the invasion force was deployed.
Despite the continued fighting, Chechen government officials and Russian delegates have resumed peace talks in Vladikavkaz, capital of the republic of North Ossetia.
The negotiators say both sides want an agreement, but they remain at odds over Russia's demand that Chechen forces put down their weapons.
Russia has offered to help rebuild Chechnya's economy, restore electricity and send food in exchange for an agreement to disarm.
But Chechen officials insist Moscow withdraws its forces first.
Russian Foreign Minister Andrei Kozyrev has already warned that if the talks break down, Moscow will take whatever action in necessary to restore order in the breakaway republic.
And Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin has defended the unpopular decision to send soldiers to Chechnya.
He said Russia's only mistake had been to wait three years before acting against the republic.

Chechnya - Grozny Under Russian Bombardment
(22 Dec 1994) Russian jets unleashed their heaviest bombardment yet on the
capital of rebel Chechnya early on Thursday (22/12). A Chechen
spokesmen claimed scores of civilians were killed by the air
attacks...a claim that was borne out by wtn television news
pictures of obscenely mutilated corpses lying in blood-saturated
snow where they were cut down. Three large bomb craters scarred a field in a northern suburb, destroying several shop fronts, smashing all surrounding windows and blackening the snow-covered ground for meters (yards) around. A nine-storey apartment building was hit on the roof, and three nearby homes were destroyed. A bomb hit the Lenin oil refinery, setting it ablaze. Another exploded near the sandbagged presidential palace, leaving a crater five meters (15 feet) wide and two meters (six feet) deep. Kiosks were destroyed, trees were knocked down and flames were visible in the distance.

A DIFFERENT RUSSIA- DAGESTAN & CHECHNYA
Hello Guys,
Click here to support my channel:
In this video, I'll be sharing my experiences of Republic of Dagestan and Chechnya.
Republic of Dagestan
Республика Дагестан
Dagestan (/ˌdæɡɪˈstæn, -ˈstɑːn/; Russian: Дагеста́н), officially the Republic of Dagestan (Russian: Респу́блика Дагеста́н), is a federal subject (a republic) of Russia, located in the North Caucasus region. Its capital and largest city are Makhachkala, centrally located on the Caspian Sea coast.
With a population of 2,910,249, Dagestan is very ethnically diverse and Russia's most independent republic, with the largest ethnicity constituting less than 30% of the population. Most significant among the ethnicities are the Avar, Dargin, Kumyk, Lezgian, Laks, Azerbaijani, Tabasaran, and Chechen. Ethnic Russians comprise about 3.6% of Dagestan's total population Russian is the primary official language and the lingua franca among the ethnicities
Republic of Chechnya
Chechnya (/ˈtʃɛtʃniə/; Russian: Чечня́, IPA: [tɕɪˈtɕnʲa]; Chechen: Нохчийчоь, Noxçiyçö), officially the Chechen Republic (/ˈtʃɛtʃɪn/; Russian: Чече́нская Респу́блика, tr. Chechenskaya Respublika, IPA: [tɕɪˈtɕɛnskəjə rʲɪˈspublʲɪkə]; Chechen: Нохчийн Республика, Noxçiyn Respublika), is a federal subject (a republic) of Russia.
It is located in the North Caucasus, situated in the southernmost part of Eastern Europe, and within 100 kilometres (62 miles) of the Caspian Sea.[13] The capital of the republic is the city of Grozny. As of the 2010 Russian Census, the republic was reported to have a population of 1,268,989 people; however, that number has been questioned by multiple demographers, who think such population growth after two deadly wars is highly implausible.
