Volcano Eruption At Close Range - Iceland (Eyjafjallajökull Volcano)
VOLCANO ERUPTION AT CLOSE RANGE -- Iceland (Eyjafjallajökull Volcano)
Most of you are certainly familiar with Eyjafjallajökull Volcano eruption in the beginning of 2010 -- eruption which disrupted and stopped air traffic all over Atlantic Ocean and mainly then in Europe where air traffic was grounded for couple of weeks.
Eruption which happened on April 14 2010 was preceded by side-slope eruption in Fimmvorthuls Pass between two biggest Icelandic Volcanoes Eyjafjallajökull and Katla. New volcano was called Fimmvortuhals Volcano and started erupted on March 21 2010. I saw the clip from eruption on Canadian TV just couple of days after first eruption and since major eruption of any of big volcanoes in Iceland was eminent I decided to travel to Iceland on minute notice.
I spend in Iceland 11 days during which I filmed and photographed eruption of Fimmvorthuhals during the nights March 31 and April 3 in chilly conditions of --23C. During first night we witnessed opening of second volcanic fissure of the volcano, which was experience beyond any comprehension.
Unfortunately we left Iceland on March 10 -- two days later eruption of Fimmvortuhals Volcano was officially declare to be over -- but ! -- On March 14 Eyjafjallajökull Volcano came back with big bang -- and the rest is the history.
However disappointing was missing the Big One the chance to see eruption of smaller volcano from extremely close range was really unforgettable and it's going to stay with me as ultimate experience of my life.
Enjoy
Jiri
BBC - Volcano Live, Iceland Erupts: A Volcano Live Special
It 2010, the ash cloud from an unpronounceable Icelandic volcano brought Europe to a standstill. In this Volcano Live special, Kate Humble heads for the source of the ash to ask whether we should now be preparing for more of the same. On her journey, Kate meets the scientists monitoring the country's most dangerous volcanoes, and investigates the biggest eruptions in Iceland's past - including a catastrophic 18th-century event that killed thousands in Iceland and also appears to have led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people across Britain and Europe. In 2010, it became clear that Britain is well within the reach of big Icelandic eruptions. To help prepare for the next one, what can we learn from the people who live right alongside them?

Doomsday Volcanoes: Will Another Icelandic Volcano Erupt? | Full Documentary | Reel Truth. Science
April 2010 saw the eruption of Iceland's Eyjafjallajökull volcano, which caused Europe to become an ash-strewn no fly zone, causing millions of flights to be cancelled. But this seems to be just the start. The Icelandic volcano Katla has started to swell and grumble plus two more giants, Hekla and Laki could erupt without any warning. Iceland is becoming geological monster and when the volcanoes erupt the consequences could be global. In this documentary atmospheric scientists look closer into what the impact would be if there was an eruption and also how we can prepare ourselves for the aftermath that would follow.

Musician explains volcano's name
Eyjafjallajokull - pronounced ay-uh-fyat-luh-yoe-kuutl-ul - is the name of Iceland's volcano that threw up plumes of ash clouds causing airspaces across Europe to close down.
Icelanders have frequently pointed out the rest of the world's mispronunciations of the volcano's name, which has been described as strange even by native Icelanders.
Eliza Geirsdottir Newman, an Icelandic musician, sang an exclusive song to Al Jazeera to helped clarify the word's correct pronunciation.

Iceland volcano Eyjafjallajokull erupting, April 2010
We were lucky enough to have cameramen on the ground and in the air during April 2010's eruption of the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajokull. The spectacular eruptions threw huge clouds of dust and ash into the air, which led to the grounding of aircraft across Europe for several days. The path of the dust was shown by satellite observations.
