Ancient Wonder: Petroglyph Sites On Big Island, Hawaii-UHD 4K
Visited 2 petroglyph sites in the Big Island of Hawaii. The Big Island contains the largest number of petroglyphs, or prehistoric rock carvings, in the state of Hawaii as well as the Pacific region. Puakō Petroglyph Archeological Preserve, a 233-acre preservation area located near the Mauna Lani Resort in South Kohala, is home to the state’s second largest collection. Within the Puakō preserve more than 3,000 “images in stone,” or “k’i’i pohaku” have been identified, and although the true meanings of these symbols are unknown, it is generally believed they are a record of significant events in the lives of ancient Hawaiians. Within the preserve you can access an impressive field that contains about 1,200 of these petroglyphs, by taking an easy 1.5-mile walking trail. Walking through the trail leading to the petroglyphs site is quite enchanting.
Another petroglyph site is on the grounds of the Waikoloa Resort. The Waikoloa Petroglyph Preserve is a great place to have a close view of the Hawaiian petroglyphs. Many of the petroglyph fields in this area reside on the Ala Kahakai Trail, also known as the King’s Trail, full of historic sites including sacred heiau, Hawaiian fishponds and settlement ruins. Unfortunately graffiti is also out there so choose for yourself which are * real * & which are modern.
The Big Island is the largest and the southeastern-most of the Hawaiian islands, a chain of volcanic islands in the North Pacific Ocean. With an area of 4,028 square miles (10,430 km2), it is larger than all of the other islands in the archipelago combined and is the largest island in the United States.

Hawaiian Petroglyph tour at the Kings' Shops Waikoloa
Kii pohaku (petroglyphs, literally “rock pictures”) may be the closest thing to a written language that Hawaiians used, and some are thought to be astronomical symbols, road signs or markers of historic events. Join expert Kalei’ula Kaneau for a moderate 1-hour walk back through Hawaii’s fascinating history, and see for yourself. Sunblock, hat and covered walking shoes recommended as the trail is uneven and rough in places.
If you visit the petroglyphs on your own, please respect this culturally sensitive area. Stay on the trail and do not approach the petroglyphs for photos or rubbings without permission of Waikoloa Security. These are fragile carvings, possibly thousands of years old, easily subject to damage and erosion. The best way to capture a petroglyph is with a photo in the late afternoon, when the shadows are long.
Location: Meet lakeside next to Island Fish and Chips at 9:30 a.m. Lava trails are uneven and rough. Wearing closed-toe walking shoes, sunscreen and hats are highly recommended. Don’t forget a camera and water.
Petroglyphs on the Big Island of Hawaii
A quick flip through a photo album of the petroglyphs found on the Big Island of Hawaii. Special thanks to Doug Maxwell for letting me use his pretty song Calypso Beach Walk to accompany my slideshow. :)
Waikoloa Village, Hawaii - Petroglyphs (2018)
There are approximately 30,000 historically significant petroglyphs, or stone carvings, in Waikoloa. They are potentially the closest thing to a written language that Ancient Hawaiians used. Although some petroglyphs are identifiable as human or animal shapes, many are more obtuse and abstract, with their meanings likely lost to history. The majority of the petroglyphs are from the Fifteenth through Eighteenth Centuries; interspersed with these drawings are messages from Nineteenth Century visitors that are written in the modern Hawaiian language.

12 PETROGLYPHS WAIKOLOA VILLAGE HAWAII PART 02 MICHAEL ANN HONEYMOON
PART 02 STARTS GETTING TO THE REAL CONCENTRATION OF GLYPHS, AND HERE YOU DON'T SEE ANYMORE GOLF CARTS. I THINK IN PART 03 OR 04 WE SEE A GOLF BALL ON THE GLYPHS,KINDA WIERD, BUT I THINK THATS WHY THERE IS A WATER COOLER NEAR THE BEGINNING OF THE TRAIL, FOR THE GOLFERS, AND YOU CROSS THE SAME SPOT NEAR THE END SO WE DRANK UP.
THIS WAS MINE AND ANN'S TRIP TO THE WAIKOLOA PETROGLYPH FIELD. WE SPENT ABOUT AN HOUR AND 15 MINUTES THERE IN THE HOT SUN. FOR THE PURPOSE OF THE VIDEO I HAVE SPED UP THE PARTS WHERE WE ARE WALKING TO SOME GLYPHS AND HIGHLIGHTED BY SLOWING DOWN THE SPOTS WHERE THERE ARE A LOT OF GLYPHS TO SEE. THESE VIDEOS WERE ALSO TAKEN WITH MY CANON D-10 CAMERA, AND WITH MY SONY HDR-HC7 HD CAMERA RIGHT NEXT TO IT . DON'T KNOW WHEN ILL POST THE HD ONES OR IF ILL EVER HAVE TIME TO, THE CANON MAKES IT EASY TO DO THIS STUFF CAUSE IT HAS ITS OWN SOFTWARE AND UPLOADS QUICKLY.HOPE YOU ARE ABLE TO SEE ENOUGH OF THE GLYPHS, SOME OF THE MORE MODERN ONES NEAR THE END I KIND OF ZIPPED THROUGH. THEY WERE ONLY A 100 YEARS OLD OR LESS. HOPE FAMILY FINDS IT INTERESTING, LOVE YOU GUYS, MIKE AND ANN

Waipi'o Valley lookout is in Waip'io, not Honoka'a (we used it as the nearest town as a point of geographic reference). Kiholo State Park is not in Kamuela, but in greater Kailua-Kona area. Punalu’u Black Sand Beach is not in Ninole, but Pahala*
***Apologies for the misspelling of Kamekameha.
????We recommend downloading The GyPSy Audio Guide if you end up driving around the island (
????Due to the volcanic eruptions on May 2018, check for Hawaii Volcanoes National Park attractions statuses and closures

3D Laser Scanning of a Hawaii Petroglyph Area
Because of the richness of its natural and cultural heritage, Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, and an International Biosphere Reserve in 1980, by UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere Program ( AIST in partnership with the National Park Service used 3D laser scanning and specialized imagery to document some of the 23,000 plus petroglyphs at the Puʽu Loa Petroglyph Site on the southern flank of Kīlauea Volcano.
