For one day a year, Siding Spring Observatory opens its telescopes to the public. It's your chance to take a closer look at the operations of Australia's largest optical telescope site.

Warrumbungle - International Dark Sky Park
Warrumbungle National Park is Australia's only Dark Sky Park.
Its iconic mountain range originated from an extinct shield volcano and it's the perfect destination for bushwalking, climbing and stargazing.
It hosts Australia's largest optical telescope at Siding Spring Observatory, part of the Research School of Astronomy & Astrophysics (RSAA) at the Australian National University (ANU).
I spend few nights in the area (and one night at the Observatory) to try and capture the essence of this beautiful area.

Warrumbungle National Park is a heritage listed national park located in the Orana region of New South Wales, Australia. The national park is located approximately 550 kilometres northwest of Sydney and contained within 23,311 hectares. The park attracts approximately 35,000 visitors per annum.
This National Park near Coonabarabran in NSW is Australia’s only Dark Sky Park, making it the perfect spot for stargazing, amateur astronomy and camping under the starriest of skies.
Camp Blackman is a popular base from which to explore Warrumbungle National Park. Well equipped with barbecues, picnic tables, hot showers and resident kangaroos. There are 102 camp site (32 powered sites) and they all are paid, booking is not required and its on first come basis. Camping fee payable at the information centre in the park.
This well-equipped campground, suitable for caravans, camper trailers, motor homes and tents, is a fantastic place to get away with family and friends. Camp Blackman can be a popular place during school holidays, so in addition to lots of kangaroos, sulphur crested cockatoos, white-winged choughs, kookaburras and butcher birds, there are bound to be lots of family groups.
Your campsite won’t be far from some of the parks walking and cycling tracks, make sure to take your bikes and walking shoes so you can explore. If you’re visiting in spring, you might be treated to the sight and smell of the wildflowers that line the tracks, like western golden wattle, smooth darling pea and kangaroo thorn

Warrumbungle National Park from Coonabarabran is worth to go there. Phillip & I stay over night at camp blackman.
Phillip & I walk up to the grand high tops at Breadknife mountain near Coonabarabarn. It took us 7 hours to complete the 13km walk.
Phillip was very hungry & thirsty!

Breadknife and Grand High Tops Walk - Warrumbungle National Park
The Warrumbungle National Park is located near the rural NSW town of Coonabarabran. One of its main attractions is the Breadknife and Grand High Tops walk, which takes you to some stunning rock formations and amazing mountain views.
The walk takes around 5 hours to complete, and includes many steep ascents (as you can see in the video). As such, you should take ample supplies of food and water, and make sure you start early in the day.

The 2018 NSAS Field Trip took a 31-member strong group to Coonabarabran for a weekend of visits and astronomical observation and imaging.
Friday night saw us heading to the Milroy Observatory where, with the help of Donna, we were able to use their dobsonian telescopes, including a 20inch one.
I took advantage of the free Saturday morning to explore a couple of walking trails in the Warrumbungle National Park.
The afternoon was devoted to the visit of the Siding Spring Observatory where, thanks to our guide Amanda, we discovered the Faulkes Telescope South of the Las Cumbras Observatory, the I.telescope installations and, the pièce de résistance, the enormous Anglo-Australian Telescope with its 3.9m mirror.
For those of us who had brought their own telescopes, Saturday night brought a great deal of excitement and, sometimes, of disappointment and frustration when all did not work according to plan.
For those, who like me hadn’t taken their scopes with them, the awesome sight of the Milky Way in this unpolluted sky will stay in our memories long enough to make this trip well worthwhile.
L'excursion de la Northern Sydney Astronomical Society pour 2018 a amené un groupe de 31 de ses membres à Coonabarabran pour un week-end de visites et d'observation et d'imagerie astronomiques.
Vendredi soir, nous a vu à l’observatoire de Milroy où, avec l’aide de Donna, nous avons pu utiliser leurs télescopes dont un de 50cm.
Personnellement, j'ai profité du samedi matin libre pour explorer quelques sentiers de randonnée dans le parc national de Warrumbungle.
L'après-midi a été consacrée à la visite de l'Observatoire de Siding Spring où, avec l'aide de notre guide Amanda, nous avons découvert le télescope Faulkes Sud de l'observatoire de Las Cumbras, les installations de I.telescope et, la pièce de résistance, l’énorme Télescope anglo-australien avec son miroir de 3,9m.
Pour ceux d’entre nous qui avaient amené leurs télescopes, le samedi soir a suscité beaucoup d’enthousiasme et, parfois, de déception lorsque tout ne fonctionnait pas comme prévu.
Pour ceux qui comme moi n’avaient pas pris leurs télescopes avec eux, rien que de pouvoir admirer la Voie Lacté dans toute sa splendeur valait le déplacement.

Warrumbungles National Park: climber's paradise
A SPECTACULAR VOLCANIC LANDSCAPE near Coonabarabran in central NSW, Warrumbungle National Park has towering trachyte spires, stunning lookouts, a wealth of wildlife and infinite bushwalks.
The park is at the junction of dry western country and wetter eastern areas, and the region boasts summits of up to 1200m above sea level. These factors result in an unusual mix of vegetation, where spinifex sits alongside flowering heath.
Rockclimbing and bushwalks at Warrumbungle
Camping facilities are excellent and inexpensive, and wildlife is abundant around the campgrounds. Eastern grey kangaroos, emus and koalas are all regular visitors.
The best of the bushwalks are the classic 16.5km Grand High Tops loop via Macha Tor; the exciting 5km loop walk up Belougery Split Rock; and the strenuous 20km return walk to the summit of Mt Exmouth, via Cathedral Arch.
Those with more adventurous hearts can rock-climb some of Australia’s highest vertical cliffs on Belougery Spire, Bluff Mountain and Crater Bluff. These thrilling climbs have names such as “Vertigo” and “Heartstopper”. SUBSCRIBE: The official channel of Australian Geographic magazine.

Our trip to the AAOs AAOMEGA telescope near Coonabarabran in the Warrumbungle national Park in northern New South Wales, 7 hours drive from Sydney. We had 3 nights there. Unfortunately 2 were rained out, but the one clear night was spectacular.
