Wat Mahathat | Historical Ayutthaya | Amazing Thailand Part 4 | Bangkok
Wat Mahathat (Temple of the Great Relics):
This is located almost right in the center of Ayutthaya. Apart from being the symbolic center where the Buddha's relics were enshrined, Wat Mahathat was also the residence of the Supreme Patriarch or leader of the Thai Buddhist monks. The temple is believed to be built during the 14th century A.D. (the early Ayutthaya period).
The main prang collapsed during the Ayutthaya period, but was restored. It collapsed again in 1911, so only the foundation of the main prang remains at present.
However, it can easily be judged from the size of the base, that the prang was quite high. As in most architecture of the early period of Ayutthaya, the main prang was the most important edifice in the temple compound.
For tourists, Wat Mahathat offers the much photographed Buddha head, embedded into a tree trunk.
Wat Mahathat, Old Ayutthaya : ENTRY FEE (for you = 50 Baht, for me = Free)
I started the day from my hotel 'Toto House' and then walked up to the Wat Mahathat temples in old Ayutthaya. I approached the tourism kiosk to get the entry ticket, but he said I could go for free. Watch this video to know why did he allow me to enter without a ticket.
See how Wat Mahathat, Wat phra, Wat Phra Si Sanphet and others look like. What are the do's and dont's for a tourist in Wat Mahathat temple complex.

This is a vlog of my travels of South East Asia.
I'm currently travelling in Thailand with plans to move on to Cambodia and later Vietnam and Laos when my Thai Visa expires.
This vlog contains some of the ruined temples in Ayutthaya, Thailand. Ayutthaya, full name Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, situated just North of Bangkok on the Chao Phraya River, used to be Thailand's Capital City until April 1767 when the City was sacked by the Burmese in the Burmese-Siamese War (1765-1767).
The city is vibrant, full of history and local culture. The food is excellent and accommodation suitable for all from the budget traveller to the family holiday maker.

Wat Mahathat, Ayutthaya
Wat Mahathat is centrally located in the Ayutthaya Historical Park. It contained (contains?) relics of the Buddha. The previously huge main prang lies in ruins, but the compound abounds with smaller prangs and chedis. A Buddha Head entwined in a tree trunk, is arguably the most photographed item in all of Ayutthaya.

Ayutthaya Thailand อยุธยา | Ayutthaya Historical Park | Wat Mahathat | Wat Phra Sri Sanphet
Wat Mahathat, “the temple of the Great Relic” was one of the most important temples in the Ayutthaya Kingdom. Located on the historical island the large monastery features a huge central prang, a very large principal viharn and ubosot and a great number of subsidiary chedis and viharns. The upper part of its once massive central prang has collapsed. Today only the base remains.
One of the temple’s most photographed objects is the head of a stone Buddha image entwined in the roots of a tree.
Wat Phra Si Sanphet, “the temple of the Buddha Si Sanphet” was the most important temple in the Ayutthaya Kingdom. Being part of the Royal Palace complex, the very large monastery with dozens of structures was used by Ayutthaya Kings only; it was a Royal temple without resident monks.
In its heydays mid 17th century the temple consisted of a raised platform supporting three very large gilded bell shaped stupas and three gilded mondops, an enormous viharn enshrining a 16 meter tall gilded Buddha image, as well as dozens of smaller chedis and chapels

TEMPLE'D OUT in Ayutthaya, Thailand // Travel Vlog
For the last inland town on my journey to Bangkok, I visited the temple ruins in Ayutthaya, Thailand. We visit Wat Mahathat and Wat Phra Ram. Even though this area is one of the most popular sites between Bangkok and Chiang Mai, I think I was experiencing major temple/ruins fatigue.

The Famous Buddha Head in Wat Mahathat, Ayutthaya Thailand
This is the famous Buddha head that you get to see in most postcards in Thailand. It is stuck with the vines of a tree in Wat Mahathat in the old city ruins of Ayutthaya in Thailand.
Ayutthaya - The Head Of Buddha In Wat Mahathat - Thailand (HD)
Wat Phra Mahathat, A large temple that was quite thoroughly ransacked by the Burmese. Several leaning prangs of Ayutthaya are still feebly defying gravity though, and the rows of headless Buddhas are atmospheric. This is also where you can spot the famous tree that has grown around a Buddha head. When taking pictures of you and the Buddha head, make sure you kneel to show respect, as it is considered holy by Thais.
