Ayutthaya Discovered: Wat Phra Sri Sanphet & The Grand Palace
Wat Phra Sri Sanphet & The Grand Palace.
Founded in 1350, Ayutthaya became the second Siamese capital, after Sukhothai. It was destroyed by the Burmese in the 18th century. Its remains, characterized by the prang (reliquary towers) and gigantic monasteries, give an idea of its past splendour. Today the ancient city is a UNESCO Heritage site centred around the Ayutthaya Historical Park.
The three chedis of Wat Phra Sri Sanphet are one of the landmarks of the Ayutthaya Historical Park.
The temple was founded on the site of three earlier prasats built in the mid 14th century by King U-Thong, the sovereign who made Ayutthaya his capital. In 1448 the prasats were converted into phutthawat, transforming them into sacred territory. From then onward, the temple was used exclusively by the Ayutthayan kings; there were no residing monks, and the temple was used for royal ceremonies and for storing royal relics.
The temple's tangible history began around 1491, when King Rama Thibodi II built two chedi for close family members. The east chedi was for the ashes of his father, King Borom Trailokanath (r. 1448-1488). The chedi to the west was for his older brother, King Borom Rachaithirat III (r. 1488-1491).
Seven years later King Rama Thibodi II added a viharn (assembly hall--shown in black) to house a standing image of the Buddha called 'Phra Si Sanphet'. After the Buddha was unveiled, the fame of the temple spread and the entire temple was given the name of the Buddha statue. The final chedi was constructed during the reign of King Borom Rachathirat IV (r. 1529-1533) to house a relics of King Rama Thibodi II.
The temple reached the peak of its glory by 1767. On the eve of the Burmese invasion, the central portion of the temple included three gilded chedis, three gilded mondops (square buildings adjacent to the chedis that held objects of worship), and two enormous viharns. The main Viharn was build in 1499 by King Rama Thibodi II and housed a large figure of the Buddha. Almost 200 kilo of gold was used to cover the image, which was given the name 'Phra Si Sanphet'. When the Burmese sacked Ayutthaya in A.D. 1767 the gold was removed by the invading forces. The remains of the Buddha image were later moved to Wat Pho in Bangkok during the reign of Rama I. Only the three Chedi were left intact.
The Royal Palace was completely destroyed during the invasion and only a few foundations walls remain today.

Wat Mahathat, “the temple of the Great Relic” was one of the most important temples in the Ayutthaya Kingdom. Located on the historical island the large monastery features a huge central prang, a very large principal viharn and ubosot and a great number of subsidiary chedis and viharns. The upper part of its once massive central prang has collapsed. Today only the base remains.
One of the temple’s most photographed objects is the head of a stone Buddha image entwined in the roots of a tree.
Wat Phra Si Sanphet, “the temple of the Buddha Si Sanphet” was the most important temple in the Ayutthaya Kingdom. Being part of the Royal Palace complex, the very large monastery with dozens of structures was used by Ayutthaya Kings only; it was a Royal temple without resident monks.
In its heydays mid 17th century the temple consisted of a raised platform supporting three very large gilded bell shaped stupas and three gilded mondops, an enormous viharn enshrining a 16 meter tall gilded Buddha image, as well as dozens of smaller chedis and chapels

Il Wat Phra Si Sanphet, il tempio del Buddha Si Sanphet era il tempio più importante del Regno di Ayutthaya. Essendo parte del complesso del Palazzo Reale, il grande tempio con decine di strutture era usato solo dai Re di Ayutthaya; era un tempio reale senza monaci residenti.Le principali strutture del tempio sono allineate ad est-ovest. Al centro del Wat Phra Si Sanphet ci sono tre grandi stupa a forma di campana (chedi) appoggiati su una piattaforma sopraelevata.Grazie per aver visitato il mio canale.

Temple of Wat Phra Sri Sanphet was the holiest temple on the site of the old Royal Palace in Thailand's ancient capital of Ayutthaya.
Located within the royal palace grounds, Wat Phra Sri Sanphet is the royal monastery.
Like the Temple of the Emerald Buddha – or Wat Phra Kaew - in Bangkok, no monk resided in Wat Phra Sri Sanphet. The temple served to conduct ceremonies within the royal court, such as the ritual to drink an oath of allegiance. It is also regarded as an equivalence of Wat Mahathat in Sukhothai and a model for the Temple of the Emerald Buddha.
Ayutthaya was attacked and razed by the Burmese army in 1767 who burned the capital to the ground and forced the inhabitants to abandon the city. The city was never rebuilt in the same location and remains known today as an extensive archaeological site.
Its remains, characterized by the ruined prang (reliquary towers) and gigantic monasteries, give an idea of its past splendour. Ayutthaya was once one of the world’s wealthiest and most cosmopolitan cities
At present, it is located in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province, Central Thailand.

Il servait de temple royal, car bien qu'enclos dans une cour particulière, il était à l'intérieur de l'enceinte du Wang Luang, immédiatement au sud du palais royal d'Ayutthaya. Sa position était donc semblable à celle du Wat Phra Kaeo par rapport au Palais royal de Bangkok.

Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya is an ancient capital and modern city in the Central Plains of Thailand, 85 km north of Bangkok. Ayutthaya was one of Southeast Asia's most prosperous cities in the 17th Century and beyond. Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Historical Park, a vast stretch of historical site in the heart of Ayutthaya city, is now an UNESCO World Heritage Site.
There were three palaces in Ayutthaya: Grand Palace, Chantharakasem Palace (the Front Palace) and Wang Lang (the Rear Palace). The largest temple in Ayutthaya, known for its distinctive row of restored chedis is Wat Phra Si Sanphet.
An impressive building that houses a large bronze cast Buddha image is the temple of Viharn Phra Mongkol Bopit. Southwest off the island is Wat Chaiwatthanaram, the temple that graces the official tourist pamphlet for Ayutthaya. Many intact pagodas surround a central chedi. A nice view of the city can be had from the top. Other important buildings include Wat Mahathat, Wat Ratchaburana, Wat Yanasen, Wat Phra Ram, and Wat Thammikarat.
