UK: LONDON: SIR PAUL McCARTNEY BOOK SIGNING
English/Nat
It was Beatlemania all over again as hundreds of fans swarmed a central London bookstore for a chance to meet Sir Paul McCartney at his first book signing.
Die hard fans travelled from as far away as Poland, and some began lining up a full day before the 58-year-old former Beatle began signing copies of Paul McCartney: Paintings, a book of his recent artwork.
Kate Brylska from Poland queued overnight but said the wait was worth it.
Mario Canosa, from the Italian island of Sardinia, broke down in tears after meeting McCartney and had to be steadied by store staff.
Thirty years after splitting up, the Beatles continue to enjoy enormous popularity.
A new greatest hits album released last month shattered records, with 3.6 (m) million copies sold in its first week.
McCartney said he began painting several years ago for a change of pace.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
They started queuing at about ten o'clock yesterday. The first person here was a lady from Poland who flew in especially on Saturday. I reckon there's about 500 people here but it's building all the time and I reckon there'll probably be about a thousand by the end of it.
SUPER CAPTION: Seraphina Granelli, Waterstones General Manager
SOUNDBITE: (English)
For me it's great to be here really. It's wonderful. It's me dream. Now I can die after this, after shaking hands with Paul - really he's wonderful.
SUPER CAPTION: Mario Canosa, Italian fan
SOUNDBITE: (English)
I've been waiting here since yesterday morning. I've paid a fortune. It takes a fortune to come to England, but it's worth it, as I said.
SUPER CAPTION: Kate Brylska, Polish fan
SOUNDBITE: (English)
I love Paul. I loved the Beatles. I wouldn't have come out. I'm 75 by the way. I've had 20 pints of blood to get here and I defied the doctors. If they don't get me a book I'll be really angry. I will. Here's to Paul.
SUPER CAPTION: Fan
SOUNDBITE: (English)
I would wager if you took a poll people would be like Art? He's an artist. They saw Paul McCartney and they came running down here and that's why we're all here, because he's a Beatle and not because he's an Artist. Sorry Paul!
SUPER CAPTION: Fan
SOUNDBITE: (English)
I can't describe it. There are no words. At least I don't know them.
SUPER CAPTION: Fan
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Next year I'm doing a bunch of things. I'm writing music at the moment. Just went into the studio. We've got a Wingspan thing which is like a Wings retrospective which is coming out, and I've got a poetry book. I'm mad. I'm crazy. (Q Are you going to Madonna's wedding?)
I don't think so.
SUPER CAPTION: Paul McCartney, Former Beatle
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Bene, bene. Best day of my life.

UK: LONDON: DUCHESS OF YORK AT BOOK SIGNING SESSION
English/Nat
The Duchess of York, fresh from a US tour to promote her autobiography, confronted her British media tormentors Monday - at a book-signing session in London.
The Duchess, known as Fergie, delighted hundreds of fans who queued up a glimpse of the royal writer.
But the visit proved a security nightmare for staff at Harrod's - the top people's store where the event took place.
Back in the lion's den - face to face with the British tabloid press - but Fergie came out fighting. She tried to silence the baying ranks of photographers by organising the photocall herself:
UPSOUND OF FERGIE: Why don't I start with this group, and then go to that one, and then to that.
Frequently derided for her dress sense, the Duchess actually won a complement from one of the photographers:
UPSOUND PHOTOGRAPHER: Beautiful. You're gorgeous.
UPSOUND FERGIE: Oh, something nice. That makes a change.
There was a moment's confusion when a Harrod's spokesman declared the photocall to be over - ahead of time.
UPSOUND HARROD'S SPOKESMAN:
Would you kindly leave. We have 19 restaurants. Would you go and take an early lunch.
It wasn't the new slimline Duchess the spokesman was addressing - but the press who by now had far outstayed their welcome:
UPSOUND HARROD'S SPOKESMAN:
Would you just hold the noise down, please, otherwise we will suspend this session. There is no need to shout. Remember, gentlemen, you are in Harrod's. Show a little decorum, please.
A long queue of customers snaked around the book department as people lined up to get the Duchess to sign on the front page:
SOUNDBITE:
We waited about two hours, but it was worth it. She's a lovely person. I wish her all the best for the future.
SUPER CAPTION: Tony Grieve, customer
SOUNDBITE:
I just shook her hand and said it was nice to meet her. She asked me if there was any particular person I wanted to dedicate it to. She said 'thank you for buying my book'. She was really polite and really nice.
SUPER CAPTION: Tea (correct) Johnson, tourist from California
The Duchess has a clear reason for being grateful - every copy that's sold will help drive down her overdraft which has been put at some 6 (m) million US dollars.
SOUNDBITE:
It's gone brilliantly today, excellent. We're going to sell out of all our copies of the book, you can see big crowds behind me, it's wonderful.
SUPER CAPTION: Keith Barnes, Fergie's publishers Simon & Schuster
The book may indeed help to ease Fergie's money problems. Whether it helps to salvage her reputation is another question entirely.

Walk 58 / Fulham Broadway, Earls Court, A Kind of Home, Kensington High Street / From Fulham Broadway Station to Waterstones on Kensingston High Street / 9 March 2019, Saturday
-
This walk is a continuation of the previous walk. I made three walks today and this is the second of the lot. It is a long day. In this walk, I walked from Fulham Broadway Tube Station to the Waterstones bookshop on High Street Kensingston, a bookshop I know quite well. In between is a walk that I took every single day for almost a year, in between where I lived on 3 Jerdan Place to The Royal College of Art. This is a walk that I will never forget. A walk that I walked each day as a ritual, as exercise, as a way of imagining myself out of London. I regret that my 2 years in London has not been spent better. I should have just enjoyed myself better. I think I did, on many levels. Anyway. Enjoy this walk. It’s getting dark again.
See it on Google Maps!

Alan Johnson: The Waterstones Interview
The new memoir from Alan Johnson, In My Life, is a unique look back at the music that not only shaped his life but arguably changed the world. From his first records and an acoustic guitar to setting up his own band and the stardom that didn't follow; we had a great chat with him at Abbey Road Studios, home of his heroes The Beatles.

Life by Keith Richards - autobiography signing at Waterstone's Piccadilly
With the Rolling Stones, Keith Richards created the riffs, the lyrics and the songs that roused the world, and over four decades he lived the original rock and roll life: taking the chances he wanted, speaking his mind, and making it all work in a way that no one before him had ever done. Now, at last, the man himself tells us the story of life in the crossfire hurricane. In a voice that is uniquely and intimately his own, with the disarming honesty that has always been his trademark, Keith Richards brings us the essential life story of our times.
