Swiss Alps | Furka & Grimsel Pass | James Bond Strasse | Mountain Pass| Rhone Glacier
The Furka and Grimsel is a high mountain pass in the Swiss Alps connecting Gletsch, Valais with Realp, Uri. The Furka Oberalp Bahn line through the Furka Tunnel bypasses the pass. The base tunnel opened in 1982 and replaced a tunnel at 2100 m.
The Furka Pass was used as a location in the James Bond film Goldfinger. One curve on the east side of the pass is even named James Bond Strasse. At the sign, there is a lookout point with a small parking area. Visitors can also park next to Hotel Belvédère, close to the top of the pass on the west side, and take the short walk to the Rhone Glacier Ice Grotto. The glacier moves 30-40 meters a year and the 100 m long tunnel and ice chamber can be visited from June when the road opens.

Le Landeron (433 m above sea level) is a historic small town and lies between the southern foot of the Jura and the western shore of Lake Biel-Bienne. The old town was once erected on a sandy island between the branches of the Zihl river, which had many tributaries back then. In 1238, Schlossberg Castle was built and in 1312, the small market town of Neuenstadt. After the drainage of the Grand Marais due to the first Jura water correction, the agriculture in this region began to blossom.
The old town of Le Landeron is well-preserved. The buildings in the old town partially date back to the 14th century. The town hall, which was built in the 15th century, accommodates a city museum. Next to the city gate lies the castle.
Le Landeron is also called the «City of Antiques». In the old town, numerous antiques and second-hand shops are next to each other. On the last weekend in September, the biggest antiques market in Switzerland takes place here.
Trips along the close-by Canal de la Thielle and through the nature reserve of the old Zihl river are popular among hikers and bikers.
