Hike to Wheeler Peak Summit | Great Basin National Park, Nevada
Join us as we hike on the Alpine Lakes Loop Trail to the summit of Wheeler Peak in Great Basin National Park, Nevada. Despite some major smoke haze from the fires raging in California, we had an amazing day on this mountain.
My hope is to provide you with all the distances, waypoints and elevations to help you safely plan your own summit. Make no mistake, the last mile to mile and a half is a real bruiser of the lungs and legs, so be prepared with plenty of water and focus on your deep, mindful breathes.
Enjoy!

Wheeler Peak at Great Basin National Park, Nevada.
We always wanted to make it to Great Basin National Park to see what all the fuss was about. We decided to make the drive up to Wheeler Peak at the 10,000 foot elevation mark, it was very pretty and was great to get away from Vegas. The trees were very beautiful, the air was crisp, clean but very thin and somewhat difficult to breathe. The campsite was very nice with the exception of the horrific smelling vault toilets as they appeared to be overly full and do for a much needed emptying. The drive up the Wheeler Peak really challenged the Expedition with the camper behind it, the air was very thin and the 5.4 liter engine was working overtime to make it up there! We also went on the Lehman Cave tour, this was an EXCELLENT tour and I highly recommend doing the full tour! Get there early since the tours fill up fast! We had mule deer come right up to the campsite at Wheeler Peak. We only stayed for one night and then it was off to Cave Lake, NV where we stayed for 3 more days. The air is easier the breathe at 7,500 range and there was plenty of fishing.

Wheeler Peak is the second highest point in Nevada (I have another video where I'm on Nevada's highest peak...). Wheeler Peak is 13,063 feet (3,982 metres) and a very pleasant hike by most standards.

Great Basin National Park in Nevada - Road Trip Vlog 14
Great Basin National Park in Nevada where we see oldest living thing on Earth - the Ancient Bristlecone Pine and Wheeler Peak - the Southern most Glacier in the United States. See it at:
Just a short drive away from Route 50 within the town of Baker, Nevada is the entrance to Great Basin National Park. It is filled with ancient natural beauty, such as the iconic Bristlecone Pine trees throughout the park, as well as spectacular scenic views. Neek, Sar and I decided to start our exploration by checking out the Great Basin Visitor Center for information and advice.
Before we ventured inside the Visitor Center, we noticed when we parked our car outside of it that there was already a spectacular view to see. The horizon was filled with beautiful mountain peaks!
There was a helpful sign nearby that showed that the highest visible peak was Jeff Davis Peak. It rises up to 12,771 feet (3,830 meters) and looked impressive. But the tallest peak in Great Basin National Park wasn't immediately visible. That was Mount Wheeler, whose peak rises to 13,063 feet (3,982 meters), but was obscured by closer mountains from our view outside the Visitor Center.
There was a wealth of information inside regarding geological facts as well as the history of those who settled in the area. The park takes its name from the Great Basin, a dry, mountainous region between the Sierra Nevada and Wasatch mountains. It protects about 77,180 acres (31,230 hectares) of land. Many of the rocks are from the Cambrian period about 500 million years ago and volcanic activity during the middle and late Cambrian period contributed to the uplift of the surrounding mountains.

Great Basin National Park Wheeler Peak
Welcome to Great Basin National Park
In the shadow of 13,063-foot Wheeler Peak, 5,000 year old bristlecone pine trees grow on rocky glacial moraines. Come to Great Basin National Park to experience the solitude of the desert, the smell of sagebrush after a thunderstorm, the darkest of night skies, and the beauty of Lehman Caves. Far from a wasteland, the Great Basin is a diverse region that awaits your discovery.

Great Basin National Park -- Adventure on America's Loneliest Road in Nevada
Great Basin National Park is a real stunner located on I50 -- America's Loneliest Road -- in Nevada's Basin and Range. The scenery ranges from the desert floor, to centuries old bristlecone pines, to pristine glacial lakes, to wonderful waterfalls, to a palatial glacial cirque, to towering mountaintops. The hikes vary from easy to strenuous. In fact, the Wheeler Peak hike looks easy until you're actually on the trail. After a mile, the surface becomes broken rock, then (at least when we were there in July) a little snow. The last mile of very sharp switchbacks take you straight up to the peak. The reward, as you'll see in this video, is enormously worth it, but it's best for people who are fit and can cope with the reduced oxygen at 13,159 feet. When you visit, absolutely set aside time for the Lehman Cave tour, too. The stalactites, stalagmites and shield formations rival the finest sculpture and the park service tour guides are cheery and knowledgable. Camping in Great Basin National Park was a thrill that we plan to repeat next summer and every time we find ourselves on America's Loneliest Road. Larry Richardson created this video for RichardsonArtPhotographyStore.com using an iPhone 7 and iMovie.
Great Basin National Park
Recorded June 3, 2019
Great Basin National Park is in eastern Nevada near the Utah border. It's in the Great Basin Desert and contains most of the South Snake mountains. In the north, the mountain-hugging Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive leads to towering Wheeler Peak. Nearby is one of several ancient bristlecone pine groves. The marble Lehman Caves have distinctive stalactites and other formations. Park wildlife includes bighorn sheep.

Great Basin National Park Must See Sights
Great Basin National Park is one of the more remote national parks in the lower 48 states, but it's got its unique appeal. Bristlecone Pines, Lehman Caves. and dark sky at night are the main attractions. These attractions with the majestic Wheeler Peak, are well worth the visit, especially given the sparse crowd.

Great Basin Park Wheeler Peak Scouting RV Spaces
Look at this! The ultimate diesel generator, only $65,192.00 & FREE Shipping!
There are 3-4 campgrounds at Great Basin National Park, but I think only 3 spaces in the whole place are big enough for more than a van or truck camper. Most of the campsites are narrow, sheer drop offs on the sides, and some, they put posts around, to make it that much harder to back in. No wonder everyone is down at the RV Park in Baker! They are currently doing some remodeling and road work, but I don't foresee the forest service making the campsites more RV friendly. The park is a nice place, lovely scenery, it would be nice if it were more workable for an RV longer than 20-22'.

Great Basin National Park, NV
Wheeler Summit trail. Altitude: 13,065 ft. (3,982.3 m.) - Great Basin National Park.
Great Basin National Park is an North American national park located in White Pine County in east-central Nevada, near the Utah border, established in 1986. The park is most commonly entered by way of Nevada State Route 488, which is connected to U.S. Routes 6 and 50 by Nevada State Route 487 via the small town of Baker, the closest settlement.
The park derives its name from the Great Basin, the dry and mountainous region between the Sierra Nevada and the Wasatch Mountains. Topographically, this area is known as the Basin and Range Province. The park is located about 290 miles (470 km) north of Las Vegas and protects 77,180 acres (31,230 ha).
The park is notable for its groves of ancient bristlecone pines, the oldest known nonclonal organisms, and for the Lehman Caves at the base of 13,063-foot (3,982 m) Wheeler Peak. The peak is also home to Wheeler Peak Glacier, which is not the southernmost glacier in the Northern Hemisphere, though described as such by the National Geographic Society, Since the Himalayan glaciers are much further south.
President Warren G. Harding created Lehman Caves National Monument by presidential proclamation on January 24, 1922. The monument was redesignated a national park on October 27, 1986. A number of developed campsites are within the park, as well as excellent backcountry camping opportunities. The Highland Ridge Wilderness lies adjacent to Great Basin National Park. These two protected areas provide contiguous wildlife habitat and protection to 227.8 square miles (590.0 km2) of eastern Nevada's basin lands.
The park has 12 trails ranging from 0.3 to 13.1 miles (0.48 to 21.08 km). Trails range from short nature trails at 6,825 feet (2,080 m) (Mountain View Nature Trail), to the Wheeler summit trail starting at 10,160 feet (3,097 m). The Wheeler Summit trail is quite strenuous, and the altitude presents significant hazards for unprepared or inexperienced hikers. Backcountry routes are occasionally maintained throughout the more remote southern portion of the park. A number of these trailheads are accessible by the road that terminates at the primitive Shoshone campground.
STUCK on Wheeler's Pass in Nevada
Today we set out to conquer Wheelers Pass off road right outside Las Vegas just after a few days of snowing on the pass! WE GOT STUCK!
The week before we tried to make the summit from the Cold Creek side, but was unable to make it up. We were moving along at a great pace until we come up to a stranded Toyota Tacoma, which eventually got us all stuck! However...lucky for us two guys named Jerry and Albert with Jeep Wranglers saved our butts and helped us turn around.
