Swiss Nostalgia Train, Filisur to Davos
Get a snapshot of what train travel was like in the early 21st century in Switzerland. The train in this video is powered by the locomotive dubbed the “crocodile,” which has been in operation since 1929. This video captures a beautiful ride on this historic train from Filisur to Davos. The train, which features historical cars and open carriages (some over 100 years old), tours through the Zügen Gorge and over the Wiesen Viaduct. You will see interesting views of Jakobshorn, rolling hills, and mountain formations along the way.

- Graubünden is a veritable labyrinth of mountains and valleys which determined the development of the region. Thanks to the Rhätische Bahn and an extensive road network, the valleys and hills no longer present a problem.
Without the Dutchman Willem Jan Holsboer, the Rhätische Bahn would never have existed. Willem Jan from Holland, forced by the illness of his wife, who suffered tuberculosis, travelled to cleaner climes, where the Swiss railways had not get laid a railway. The area was incredibly beautiful, but too rough for railroad ties. The inclines were too steep, and the viaducts needed, too high. Time here stood still. The area barely changed. But look, now there is a train. Willem Jan pushed on. If the railway authorities don't want to, we'll build the railway ourselves, history quotes him.

Awesome Landwasser Viaduct

A must for all railway fans – beauty and boldness combined. With its 65m high pillars, tapering towards the top, the viaduct is one of the most elegant bridge constructions in Graubünden. The most frequently photographed feature of the Rhaetian Railways.
Between Thusis and St. Moritz the Landwasser viaduct is the most spectacular construction on the 63 kilometers long Albula stretch. And the Albula and Bernina routes of the scenic Rhaetian railway form part of the UNESCO World Heritage list since mid July 2008 – as first of three railway lines worldwide.
The construction of the main pillars of the Landwasser viaduct in 1901/1902 was considered a huge architectural feat, as this took place without scaffolding and solely two cranes. And 106 years later, in the year 2009, the masonry and track trough of the viaduct were repaired for the very fist time. The viaduct wall of natural dolomite lime is 142 meters long and at 65 meters high extends in a curve over the rugged Landwasser Valley and inside a tunnel, the entrance of which is on a vertical rock wall.
From the Filisur village you reach a beautiful vantage point in just half an hour on foot, from where you have amazing views of the viaduct. Next a path leads either down to the river, under the viaduct and into a ravine, or at the fork to the lookout point in around 2 hours and on to the Wiesner viaduct. This viaduct you can cross on a footpath while enjoying incredible in-depth views down under.

Riding the train over the Landwasser viaduct 01
One of the most spectacular sections on the Rhaetian Railway RhB is the uphill run over the high viaduct from where the train immediately enters a tunnel. This section is on the narrow gauge Albula line to St. Moritz, just below the Filisur station, a junction to and from Davos.
The blue engine is serving as a large billboard, regular color would be red as the passenger cars.
For best pictures or movies, try to find a car where you can open the windows on the right (uphill) side. Older cars usually have at least one window in the vestibule that can be opened without bothering fellow passengers. The beautiful Glacier Express cars, while looking good on the bridge, do not provide good photo opportunities from the train. :-(
