David and I love State Parks and camping nearby is a must to have many great adventures. We ended up staying at Rockhouse Campground for 14 nights. It is a quiet, large, and beautiful campground. Its proximity to Borrego Springs for food, water, and supplies along with bordering Anza-Borrego Desert State Park makes this campground the perfect base camp location!

- Living Off The Grid in a DIY Truck Camper
Here's a sampling of what I surface-collected in Anza Borrego Desert State Park in the area of the San Felipe Wash roughly between Yaqui Well and Tamarisk Grove. I was dry-camping here for about a week -- great place to boondock! -- and wasn't even expecting to do any collecting, but really, how can you avoid it? :) The first thing I found was a few little citrines, and then once I started actively looking for them, I found tons. The fossil bones (?) are another interesting find, if that's what they are. (Are they?) I recorded the GPS location, mostly in case I discover that I ought to return them. :)
I also set up a special rockhounding geocache with some of these very rocks for anyone checking out the area who wants to join the game and see some samples of what you might find if you look around - coordinates are at the end of the video.
This was the first serious week of desert camping to test my DIY truck camper's boondocking ability. I'm pleased that everything worked out real well. You can find out more about my camper at my website ...

Road Trip With Huell Howser #148 - ANZA BORREGO
On this desert adventure, Huell visits the Anza Borrego Desert State Park and the community of Borrego Springs. The Park is the largest state park in California, with five hundred miles of dirt roads, 12 wilderness areas and miles of hiking trails. It's one of the most beautiful places on earth. Huell then gets to know the locals in town and visits some wonderful businesses. He samples some goodies at the Fudge Factory and checks out some very unique art at Liesel's Art Studio and has lunch at an unlikely French bistro, the French Corner. We finish our visit with the amazing sculptures of Ricardo Breceda who makes creatures from the past come alive with metal and a welding torch.

Grapevine Canyon Road - Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, CA
Grapevine Canyon was one of the historic routes into Borrego Valley before SR-78 was completed in the 1930's. Even before it was used as a horse and wagon trail by settlers and miners, Grapevine Canyon was home to the Kumeyaay Indians and their artifacts can still be found in the area. Today, Grapevine Canyon provides a fun off-road trail either on its own or as a leg of an overland expedition through the desert Southwest. The trail also serves as a great entrance route into Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, starting from S-22 outside Anza-Borrego and descending into the heart of the park near Tamarisk Grove Campground. A smattering of historic sites dot the trail, including Yaqui Well, a historic year-round seep that has been used by native peoples and desert travelers for centuries. The area around Yaqui Well is also known for attracting numerous and diverse bird species, making it an excellent spot for bird watching.

1947 8mm Film: Marshal South Family, Ghost Mountain, Anza Borrego Desert

This is one of the only known films of Marshal South and his family, taken in 1947 at their home, Yaquitepec, on Ghost Mountain, in what is now Anza Borrego Desert State Park. The film is narrated by Rider South, eldest of the children. The film was acquired many years ago by Diana Lindsay, and was subsequently donated to the ABDSP archives. I produced the recording of the narration in 2002 (or thereabouts), at a time when this was the only known film of the South family. I recently was able to borrow the film to make a high-quality scan of it using my Moviestuff Retroscan Universal film scanner. This version is far better than the previous transfer that was made of the film. Thanks to Diana Lindsay and ABDSP for helping make this film transfer possible!

I found this nice specimen while hiking the large wash between Yaqui Well and Tamarisk Grove -- the huge one just to the west of Yaqui Pass Rd where it intersects Grapevine Canyon. There are lots of larger rock samples there and it's a very cool hike that I'll do again sometime.
