Petra (Jordan)- A World's Marvel
Petra, a Greek word meaning stone, is a historical and archaeological city in the Jordanian governorate of Ma'an that is famous for its rock cut architecture and water conduit system. Established sometime around the 6th century BC as the capital city of the Nabataeans, it is a symbol of Jordan as well as its most visited tourist attraction. It lies on the slope of Mount Hor[3] in a basin among the mountains which form the eastern flank of Arabah (Wadi Araba), the large valley running from the Dead Sea to the Gulf of Aqaba. Petra has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. The site remained unknown to the Western world until 1812, when it was introduced by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt. It was described as a rose-red city half as old as time in a Newdigate Prize-winning poem by John William Burgon. UNESCO has described it as one of the most precious cultural properties of man's cultural heritage. l
Aqaba only coastal city of Jordan by the Red Sea
Aqaba is the only coastal city in Jordan and the largest and most populous city on the Gulf of Aqaba. Situated in southernmost Jordan, Aqaba is the administrative centre of the Aqaba Governorate. The city had a population of 148,398 in 2015 and a land area of 375 square kilometres (144.8 sq mi). Today, Aqaba plays a major role in the development of the Jordanian economy, through the vibrant trade and tourism sectors. The Port of Aqaba also serves other countries in the region.
Excavations at Tall Hujayrat Al-Ghuzlan and Tall Al-Magass in Aqaba revealed that the city has been an inhabited settlement since 4000 BC, with a thriving copper production on a large scale.
In 64 BC following the Roman conquest of the Levant, they annexed the city and called it Ayla and Aelana. Both Petra and Ayla were under Nabatean influence, but despite the Roman rule, the Nabateans continued to prosper. Ayla reached its peak during Roman times, the great long distance road the Via Traiana Nova led south from Bostra through Amman, terminating in Ayla, where it connected with a west road leading to Philistia and Egypt. Around 106 AD Aqaba was one of the main ports for the Romans. Ayla came under Byzantine Empire rule in 300 AD, where the Aqaba Church was constructed, considered to be the world's very first purpose-built church. A fortress called Helim, was built in the 12th century by the Crusaders, which remains relatively well-preserved today.

Visiting Jerash, Jordan Travel Video (Gerasa of Antiquity - Γέρασα - محافظة جرش). So another new country for us. Today we are in Jordan. We just landed in Amman yesterday and this morning we are exploring the Ancient city of Jerash and now this is a Greco-Roman city so it belonged to the Greeks then it was converted by the Romans and the architecture was slighted changed so we're going to be showing you some of that.

So this is a Roman planned theater. When in use it could sit up to three thousand people and it was used for all kinds of performances.

We're now at the temple of Artemis the Goddess of the Sea.
So with the wall we were looking at just behind the olive press you can track the three different civilizations because at the very bottom you have the Greek blocks which were all different sizes and didn't really match. Then you can see the Roman style which were the big blocks of limestone and then at the very top there were smaller blocks which were placed by an Islamic culture.
This particular section was only uncovered in the 1970's. Prior to that it was underground.

I visit the citadel, have a wander around the city centre, then head up north to see the Roman ruins at Jaresh.
Aqaba, Jordan: Adventures at the Red Sea of Jordan
I was so looking forward to arriving in Jordan. The change to the middle east was something I really needed. I love the Jordanian Hospitality, and we were awarded it in droves once we arrived in Aqaba. The city of Aqaba is a port city and an economic free zone along the Red Sea of Jordan. It's absolutely beautiful and now that Turkish Airlines has direct flights from Istanbul, Turkey, it makes it easy to get to.
There's enough to keep people occupied in Aqaba Jordan for weeks. Beside the beaches at places like Berenice Beach Club, there is also scuba diving in the Red Sea, ATVing in the desert, and loads of other amazing things to do in Aqaba. Honestly, I'm dying to get back to this city.

Jordan Travel - Jordan officially the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan (Arabic: المملكة الأردنية الهاشمية), Al-Mamlaka al-Urduniyya al-Hashemiyya) and also known as the JK (short for The Jordanian Kingdom), is a kingdom on the East Bank of the River Jordan in Western Asia. It borders Saudi Arabia to the east and south-east, Iraq to the east, Syria to the north and West Bank and Israel to the west, sharing control of the Dead Sea. Jordans only port is at its southern tip, at the Gulf of Aqaba, which is shared with Israel, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia. Much of Jordan is covered by the Arabian Desert. However, the north-western part of Jordan is part of the Fertile Crescent. The capital city is Amman.
During its history, Jordan has seen numerous civilizations, including those of the Ancient Near East with the Canaanite and later other Semitic peoples such as the Edomites, and the Moabites. Other civilizations possessing political sovereignty and influence in Jordan were: Akkadian, Assyrian, Israelite/Judean, Babylonian, and Persian empires. The lands of Jordan were for a time under the rule of Pharaonic Egypt, composed part of the greater Kingdom of Israel (including the later Judaean Kingdom, Hasmonaen Kingdom of Israel and Herodian Dynasty), and notably, the region of Jordan also gave birth to the Nabataean civilization which left rich archaeological remains at Petra, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World located in the Maan Governorate. Cultures further west also left their mark, such as the Macedonian/Greek/Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman empires. Since the seventh century, the area has been under the primary rule of Muslim and Arab cultures, with the exceptions briefly for the area in Western Jordan during the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem, and for the entire region during the early-mid twentieth century under British rule which led to Jordans establishment as an autonomous state.
The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is a constitutional monarchy with representative government. The reigning monarch is the chief executive and the commander-in-chief of the armed forces. The king exercises his executive authority through the prime ministers and the Council of Ministers, or cabinet. The cabinet, meanwhile, is responsible before the democratically elected House of Deputies which, along with the House of Notables (Senate), constitutes the legislative branch of the government. The judicial branch is an independent branch of the government.
Modern Jordan is predominantly urbanized. Jordan is classified as a country of high human development by the 2010 Human Development Report.[8] Furthermore, The Kingdom has been classified as an emerging market with a free market economy by the CIA World Fact Book. It has more Free Trade Agreements than any other country in the region. It has a pro-Western regime with very close relations with the United Kingdom and the United States. It also became a major non-NATO ally of the United States in 1996, and is one of only two nations in the region, the other being Egypt, that have diplomatic relations with Israel.[9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16] It is a founding member of the Arab League,[17] the WTO,[18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25] the AFESD,[26] the Arab Parliament,[27] the AIDMO, the AMF,[28] the IMF,[29][30] the International Criminal Court,[31] the UNHRC,[32] the GAFTA, the ESCWA,[33] the ENP[34][35][36] and the United Nations.[37] Jordan is also currently undergoing close integration with the European Union and the Gulf Cooperation Council.
