Nanaimo Airport Shows The Love For Direct Flights To Edmonton
Central Vancouver Island residents have been demonstrating sky-high levels of passion for travel to Edmonton, in Nanaimo Airport's Show Your Love campaign. In about a month’s time over 1,200 residents have “Shown Their Love” and support for this route through sharing their stories on engaging on and following the new @FlyYCD Twitter account.
At the end of January, WestJet made the difficult decision to redeploy three of its aircraft in the fleet. A number of cities in several western provinces were affected by route cancellations and frequency reductions, including the Nanaimo to Edmonton flight.
Airport CEO Mike Hooper says We are overwhelmed by the support we have received so far through the campaign. We are hopeful the strong outpouring will demonstrate to air carriers that they'll have a huge demand for this route again.”
Residents most often cite family and work connections as the reason for their desire to have a direct flight again between the two cities.
The airport team has started compiling all the “love” to share with air carries to discuss reinstatement of this popular route. The first step was to create a 60 second video, shot on March 4, the last day of the non-stop service. “The video illustrates the outpouring of emotional connection Central Island residents have for this service,” explains Hooper.
Residents can still express their “love” in a number of ways:
- To share their personal story and connection as why travel to Edmonton is important to them at Showyourlove.NanaimoAirport.com
- To post the “Show Your Love” icon on their social media pages with a story of the trip or connection to share with their friends
- And to engage with the airport on Facebook and Twitter
Central Island residents will be able to continue to fly to Edmonton via connections in Calgary or Vancouver.

Sunshine Coast, Tofino & Ucluelet
Our annual Mother Daughter Birthday Trip 2016 spent touring the Sunshine Coast, Tofino and Ucluelet.
We started our trek ferrying over to Gibson's B.C., to see Molly's Reach, Sechelt, Halfmoon Bay & Powell River. Did not get to Skookumchuck Narrows though - Next Time!
We Spent the night in Powell RIver then took the Ferry over to Comox in the morning continuing our route down towards Port Alberni, Sproat Lake to see the petroglyphs and then on to Clayoquot Plateau Provincial Park. We stopped to have a lovely swim/lunch at an unknown lake along the Pacific Rim Highway then arrived shortly after at our destination in Tofino.
We spent time on wild coastline, foggy surf beaches in hiking trails and in the air, capping off our time in Ucluelet.

Pacific Rim National Park Reserve is a 511 km2 (197 sq mi) park located in British Columbia, Canada, which comprises three separate regions: Long Beach, the Broken Group Islands, and the West Coast Trail. It represents the Pacific Coast Mountains landscape which is characterized by rugged coasts and temperate rainforests. Widespread vegetation found in the park includes western hemlock, Sitka spruce, western red-cedar, deer fern and sword fern. Animal species vary from marine and intertidal species, such as humpback whales and ochre sea star, to terrestrial mammals, such as Vancouver Island wolves. For recreational purposes, Long Beach is used for surfing and windsurfing, the Broken Group for sea kayaking, and the West Coast Trail for hiking, as well as camping in all areas and scuba diving in the winter months in the Long Beach and Broken Group areas.
The Wickaninnish Beach Provincial Park formed the nucleus upon which the national park was assembled. After years of negotiation between the federal government and the provincial government of W.A.C. Bennett, a breakthrough was reached after Jean Chrétien took over for Arthur Laing as the federal minister responsible for parks. British Columbia adopted the West Coast National Park Act in 1969 and the two governments signed an agreement in 1970 to create the park through land assembly and extinguishing forestry rights. Following protracted negotiations, the park was finally added to the National Parks Act in 2000, classified as a park reserve based on an accepted claim of certain rights to the area by the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council.
