I Don't Care For the RER Trains/Paris, France
There are various RER (reseau éxpresse régionnale, I think that stands for -- regional express network) trains running in and around Paris, France. They have letters of the alphabet to designate them, and in the City itself, they interface with the métro system. Perhaps you've noticed them here, or ridden them.
There has been an electronic pass (NAVIGO) out for quite some time now, but since I don't commute or travel much, I still buy physical tickets. Your métro/bus/tramway tickets do not work on the RER system. At certain points in Paris proper they do, but not much. I take the RER B line sometimes, and it's run by the SNCF on one side of Gare du Nord, and the RATP on the other. The drivers must change there. It's an inherent glitch, if you know what I mean. There are often delays and cancellations throughout the system.
The RER system has a reputation for being unsafe, and that could be, but mostly, I find them uncomfortable and not user-friendly. The stations are rarely accessible, the platforms are usually exposed to the weather, for your long trips good luck finding a train with a toilet, the human vendors are rare and tend to be indifferent or badly informed, and the machines do not make it clear how you can save money by perhaps buying round-trip tickets, or ten-packs of tickets (carnets) for a nice discount if you take that trip fairly often. I just don't like any of the RERs.
I was trying to get from up near CDG-Roissy Airport to Stade de France in Saint-Denis, and traffic everywhere had been a mess all day, on the roads, everything, everywhere, starting in the morning. This is not all that unusual for Paris on a Friday, and if it rains, forget about it, you are talking major delays. There'd been a serious accident on the RER B line, so there were lots of delays, cancellations, computer screens which are frequently out of order anyway, and so on. I was trying to find a train from Aulnay-Sous-Bois here, and eventually got one to Le Bourget, where I had to change trains again. It's likely I could have taken a bus toward Saint-Denis from Aulnay, or even Le Bourget, but I only had two tickets on me, and I wasn't sure how to do that, nor was I thrilled about the intermittant rain (I'd chosen a Spring hat for the day -- straw).
So, this is what it was like. About four hours of commuting time for three hours of work. Not worth it, but I've been unemployed or underemployed here for 13 years now, so I do as much as I can to keep my hand in. You wouldn't want to end up on the benefits system here in France -- it's mighty slim pickings, and not worth the hassle. About a third of the French who qualify won't take it -- too proud. They don't have food stamps here, by the way (gleaning is legal, however).
Since I bought only one set of round-trip tickets, that cost me just under five euros. It's really not good value for your money. Always keep your ticket on you or validate your NAVIGO pass -- you might be asked to show proof that you paid for your journey.
Believe it or not or believe it, I really like France and consider myself darn lucky I came over here from the USA nearly 20 years ago. Overall, it's a much better quality of life than I had in Ohio or New York. You have to take the good with the bad in life.

Aubervilliers -- Authentic Paris Just Beyond the Paris City Limits
Finding the Paris of yesteryear is getting harder in many ways. A look at great old books such as VANISHING FRANCE (now long out of print but a real classic if you can find it -- came out in the '70s) gives you a taste of the good, the bad and the pungent, but if you go just a bit beyond the city limits, still on the same ol' RATP/CIF public transportation system, you can find small family shops, public baths, active churches and other places of worship (rare in France, which is now the world's most secular country) and lower prices.
I visited a city Centre de Santé which has a specialist I like, so for free or a low price, I get health and counseling services as needed, including dental care if I choose.
Happy that I was not uncomfortable in the typical late August heat, as this has been a mild Summer, I walked toward the 170 bus, one of the first which ran on natural gas, much quieter and cleaner. Not perfect, but an improvement over diesel and other fuels. (France is still far from green -- I found it very backward when I first came here and still do in many ways.)
Aubervilliers is still poor and very polluted, let's be frank. It's vibrant and safe, however, and any shopping, dining or even sightseeing you might want to do in Paris, you could do some of it here, with a lot less impact to your finances. I've had lunch at the St. Christophe brasserie behind the old church you see here briefly -- the working person's fixed price lunch was about five USD three years ago and had two courses, bread, tap water and a dessert. Remember, if you like wine, ask for a pichet de rouge, (or blanc, or rosé for example) and see what they have. Often it's a better quality wine someone did not finish and they sell it for a fraction of the bottle price.
A tramway and métro line connecting Paris better is underway. If you're thinking of living and working in Paris, consider places to live in the petite couronne (little crown) and spend less.

Aujourd'hui, nous allons visiter un appartement en location de vacances de type T2, se situant dans le quartier prisé du Jardin des Plantes, dans le 5ème arrondissement de Paris. Non loin du 13ème arrondissement, cet appartement est très bien situé dans ce quartier charmant et dynamique.
Cet appartement se trouve au 1er étage d'un immeuble avec ascenseur faisant face à une petite intersection avec une épicerie.
En entrant dans l'appartement, vous vous trouverez dans la cuisine. Cette cuisine à l'américaine est entièrement meublée avec tous les équipements nécessaires à la préparation de vos repas durant votre séjour à Paris. Vous y trouverez un comptoir, des plaques de cuisson, un four traditionnel et même un lave-vaisselle. De la vaisselle, des poêles et des casseroles sont bien entendu fournies pour la durée de votre séjour.
Juste à coté de la cuisine se trouve le salon. Cette pièce est meublée avec un canapé, une table basse, une chaine stéréo et un téléviseur, qui en font le lieu idéal pour se reposer et savourer un verre de vin. Il y a aussi une fenêtre, qui non seulement illumine la pièce de lumière naturelle mais qui offre également une vue sur la rue. Près de la fenêtre se trouve un placard où vous pourrez ranger vos affaires.
La chambre est meublée avec un lit double et dispose d'une fenêtre avec vue sur la rue. Les sols de la chambre sont en parquet, tout comme pour le reste de l'appartement.
La salle de bain est accessible par la chambre et est meublée avec une douche, un lavabo et un miroir. Vous trouverez également quelques espaces de rangement et une machine à laver.
Ce magnifique appartement meublé est idéal pour votre séjour à Paris.

Non loin de l'appartement, vous trouverez l'hôpital de la Salpetrière, un hôpital d'enseignement mondialement connu. Après avoir été une usine de poudre à canon, ce bâtiment fut désigné hôpital par Louis XIV en 1654. La magnifique chapelle Saint Louis et sa croix grecque furent également construites durant cette période.
Créé en 1626 sous Louis XIII, le Jardin des Plantes est un incroyable jardin au cœur de Paris. Ouvert au public depuis 1640, vous pouvez vous y rendre pour vous reposer, vous promener ou encore visiter les magnifiques serres et jardins botaniques.
A coté, vous trouverez le Muséum national d'histoire naturelle. Ce musée d'histoire naturelle offre de nombreuses choses à voir comme la Galerie de l'Evolution et la Galerie de Minéralogie. La Galerie de Minéralogie présente une grande collection de cristaux, pierres précieuses et minéraux dont certains sont parmi les meilleurs au monde.
La Grande Mosquée de Paris est un endroit à voir pendant votre séjour à Paris. Ouverte en 1926, cette superbe mosquée est aujourd'hui un lieu dans lequel on peut se rendre pour prier ou encore manger un couscous et boire un thé à la menthe.
La Manufacture des Gobelins fut fondée par Jean Gobelin aux alentours de 1440. Cette usine royale de tapisserie est entré dans son âge d'or sous le règne d'Henri IV en 1601, époque à laquelle elle fournissait le Château de Versailles.
Dans la charmante rue des Gobelins, vous trouverez le Château de la Reine Blanche qui date de 1480. L'origine du nom de ce château reste un mystère et il est aujourd'hui composé de luxueux appartements privés. Bien que privé, ce château est durant l'été et des visites y sont organisées.
