-- About this video --
Today we are doing some bone carving on the West Coast of New Zealand with Skeleton Crew Carving Studio in Barrytown! We are going to be carving our very own bone pendants with Maori designs. It makes an awesome and personal New Zealand souvenir.
From Punakaiki, it’s a quick drive to Barrytown which is the hidden base of Skeleton Crew Carving Studio. It’s a walk through a farm paddock and then into the forest to find the bone carving studio where we meet Karen and her dogs.
We first pick our Maori bone carving designs and then challenge each other to carve us an awesome Maori bone necklace. The process to carve the necklace takes about 2 hours but the end result looks so professional and we are super stoked about our new Maori bone necklace.
We head back to Punakaiki to check out the Punakaiki Cavern, just off the main state highway and easy to access. This is a free new Zealand cave you can explore at your own leisure, so we crawl through some tunnels and into a gorgeous room with light beaming through and opening. Punakaiki Cave is a fun and stunning cave in New Zealand even if it is small.
Tonight we are staying in the awesome Punakaiki Beach Camp. Join us for more of our backpacking New Zealand vlog tomorrow!
So what do you think of bone carving in New Zealand and the Punakaiki Cavern? Let us know in the comments.

Point Elizabeth Walkway, West Coast, NZ. Looking South back towards Greymouth. 2014.
Time:
1 hr 45 min one way
Distance:
5.5km one way
A stunning, well surfaced, coastal walkway. Enjoy walking through varied and interesting forest to a panoramic, cliff top viewing platform.
The exposed rocky Point Elizabeth lookout has views south toward Mt Cook, north along a spectacular rocky coast and inland towards the Paparoa Mountain Range. Offshore 'sea stacks' remain as a reminder that the point once extended much farther out to sea.
The stunning subtropical forest features nikau palms and mamaku (black tree fern) intertwined with supple jack vines and kiekie. There are also large podocarps like rimu, kahikatea and miro along with epiphytic northern rata adding a splash of crimson during summer. Native birds such as fantails, tomtits, grey warblers and bellbirds are plentiful at any time of year.

Diving and Horseback Riding in New Zealand 2015
Diving with Dive!Tutukaka at Northland, New Zealand. Dive spots are the Waikato navy frigate wreck nearby the port of Tutukaka and some places at the Poor Knight Islands, a Marine Reserve and Nature Reserve.
Horseback riding made possible by Pakiri Beach Horse Rides. The Warrior Trail, a 5 day ride, offers several different terrains, great views and the possibility to get in touch with the real Maori culture and hospitality.

New Zealand South Island Travel, December 2015 : Punakaiki
I went to Pancakes Rock twice - one right after the heavy rain in the evening, one early in the morning before I left to Franz Josef Glacier. Both provided a great experience.
If you go to Punakaiki, make sure you also go to the Truman Track.
From my experience, it is one of the most beautiful tracks my New Zealand trip. It is one of the Must-Go destinations.
Truman Track is very easy to access. And with a short walk, you get some stunning views.
Cheers,
Yong Chee Khen

Rimu Walk Tikorangi The Jury Garden Taranaki New Zealand
Petrochemical development around us is impacting ever more heavily. Heavy transport started before 7.30am this Saturday morning. At times during the day, there is a heavy vehicle movement past us every 60 to 90 seconds. The noise is exacerbated by a relatively steep hill with a sharp turn at right angles at the bottom of the hill which means the trucks have to brake, stop and then change gears as they gradually pick up speed again.
