Maruia Hot Springs on the West Coast - New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year – Backpacker Guide New Zealand

-- About this video --
Today we are driving from St Arnaud to Reefton on the West Coast of New Zealand. The drive is long through Lewis Pass but there are plenty of awesome reasons to break up the journey and makes some stops along the way. First up, it’s Maruia Falls.
Maruia Falls is just a five-minute walk from a car park off the main state highway through Lewis Pass. We get a couple of vantage points for pictures of the wide and roaring Maruia Falls. Then we are on our way through Lewis Pass.
A detour off Lewis Pass brings us to Maruia Hot Springs, some natural mineral hot pools on the West Coast. These South Island hot pools are pumped from a natural hot spring across a braided river. The Maruia Hot Pools are surrounded by stunning views of South Island mountain scenery.
We take the lunch and pool entry package, so after some lunch we are given a tour of the Maruia Hot Springs which has indoor and outdoor hot pools. We opt for the outdoor hot pools which are in a natural-looking setting. There are multiple things to try for massages from waterfalls and such.
After relaxing in the Maruia Springs for far too long, we get changed and go for a nearby walk along the river and among the West Coast South Island scenery. Just ask reception for directions.
Our final destination tonight is Reefton on the West Coast region of New Zealand.
So what do you think of Maruia Hot Springs? Would you stop here to relax in these New Zealand hot pools? Let us know in the comments.

Washpen Falls is a true hidden gem of the Canterbury region and a Canterbury must-do! Washpen Falls is found just outside of Methven and involves and 2-hour loop walk through some of the most diverse landscape and sights in New Zealand.
Washpen Falls is a walk on private land with a small entry fee but it’s worth it to see this rugged volcanic canyon rich in Maori history, native forest, exotic forest, lava caves, lava boulders, birdlife, waterfalls and even a lagoon with a rowing boat. For one of the best walks in the South Island, check out Washpen Falls.

Do you love spas and soaking in mineral pools? Rotorua’s Polynesian Spa was voted as a top 10 world day spa resort by Condé Naast Traveller. Overlooking Lake Rotorua, The Polynesian Spa has 26 different pools with varying temperatures that include private pools, deluxe pools and adult-only areas. The waters are also well known for their therapeutic qualities.
Not only that, there was one extremely hot pool producing the heat of the pools that I jumped in without checking signs and I burned my ankle. They were quick to come and tender my ankle. I was okay after all, but it took me two days to heal the wound.
Overall, it was exhilaratingly relaxing experience to soak in the spas! Hot pool indulgence doesn’t come any better than this. Be sure to go there right before the sunset.
