Colville, a small town in the north of the Coromandel Peninsula in the North Island of New Zealand, lies 26 kilometres north of Coromandel in Colville Bay on the Hauraki Gulf, and is the northernmost town of any note on the peninsula. North of Colville, 28 kilometres of rough road lead to the small settlement of Port Jackson, close to the peninsula's northwesternmost point, Cape Colville and 20 km to Port Charles on the northeastern side. The town is the service and social centre for the area, with a co-operatively-owned general store, Postal Delivery Centre, volunteer fire brigade, school, community hall and several houses. Hot Water Beach is a beach on Mercury Bay on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand, approximately 12 kilometres south east of Whitianga, and approximately 175 kilometres from Auckland by car. Its name comes from underground hot springs which filter up through the sand between the high and low water tidal reaches. The beach is a popular destination both for locals and tourists visiting New Zealand. Annual visitor numbers have been estimated at 700,000, making it one of the most popular geothermal attractions in the Waikato Region.

Orewa is a suburb of Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city. It lies on the Hibiscus Coast, just north of the base of the Whangaparaoa Peninsula and 40 kilometres north of central Auckland. Orewa's population was 8,523 in the 2013 Census, an increase of 1,197 from 2006. It is a popular holiday destination. Orewa is also considered one of the fastest growing places in New Zealand and is one of the most expensive areas in which to buy a house.The Northern Motorway, part of State Highway 1, passes just inland of Orewa and extends through the twin Johnston Hill tunnels to near Puhoi. Orewa was administered as part of the Rodney District for two decades, until this was subsumed into the new Auckland Council in October 2010.

Matakana is a small town in the Rodney District of New Zealand. Warkworth lies about 9 km to the south-west, Snells Beach the same distance to the south, Omaha is about 7 km to the east, and Leigh about 13 km to the north-east. The Matakana River flows through the town and into Kawau Bay to the south-east.The surrounding area contains several vineyards. It is also known for its farmers' market, cinema, cafes, restaurants and boutique food-shops. The reasonable proximity to Auckland has led to the region becoming a trendy getaway spot for foodie Aucklanders.From 2018 it is served by 7 buses a day between Warkworth and Omaha. From 2013 it had 5 buses a day and is also served by Mahu City Express. Matakana has had a bus since at least 1930, including buses to Auckland.

Day 6’s activity of New Zealand Biggest Gap Year is with Coromandel Adventures. We join Coromandel Adventures for a day tour of the Northern Coromandel as part of a Northern Coromandel Sunset Tour. Despite the disastrous weather of yesterday’s activity it turns out to be a stunning day as we drive north on the Coromandel Peninsula of New Zealand. Willie, our Coromandel Adventures tour guide, shows us the hidden gems of the Coromandel, from the Muriwai Coastal Track to the beautiful Fletchers Bay.

Since we left our campervan at the Coromandel Top 10 Holiday Park, we are grateful to be able to venture down the gruelling winding roads of the Northern Coromandel Peninsula with Coromandel Adventures. Otherwise, our campervan just wouldn’t make a trip like this! On the way back, we find out why this tour is described as a “Sunset Tour” with awesome views across the Coromandel Peninsula at sunset.

We hit the road early from Tapu to get to Port Jackson early. The coastal road all the way was absolutely stunning. We were staying at the Port Jackson Department of Conservation campsite which cost $13 per person, per night. The beach was totally deserted. We literally had the whole place to ourselves. The beach was beautiful, the sea was crystal clear and the views from the coastal walk were epic. We had a good swim in the sea even though it was freezing and made the most of the fire pits.

We were so glad we went to Port Jackson. It really is a hidden gem and we would both say Port Jackson was one of our favorite places in New Zealand.

Coromandel, New Zealand | New Chums Beach | Port Jackson | Stony Bay

In this video, I share 3 adventures from my travels around the Coromandel in New Zealand.

New Chums Beach is a popular spot. The walk starts at Whangapoua Beach and crosses a tidal river. Tip: Go at low tide. The path is along the rocky beach and over the hill. It can get muddy in winter!

From Colville to Port Jackson is a scenic drive on gravel road and you'll want to stop multiple times for photos. This is the left branch at the very top of the Coromandel. Port Jackson has a campsite that's empty in winter but I've heard is packed in summer. Beyond Port Jackson, you ford a river and eventually reach a carpark at another beach with a walk that connects to Stony Bay.

Stony Bay is at the end of the right branch at the very top of the Coromandel. Again, it's gravel roads but with a few more houses. Stony Bay has a DoC campground and is the other end of the walk from Port Jackson.
