De Smet South Dakota
In this episode of Cheap Family Travel ( Nick Regan, Maggie, and Kate visited the small town of De Smet, home to the famous author, Laura Ingalls Wilder. De Smet, South Dakota, is a fun, family-oriented town that gives visitors the opportunity to step back in time, as the town still looks how it did a generation ago, when Laura Ingalls Wilder and her family lived in The Little Town on the Prairie, on On the Shores of Silver Lake, and during, The Long Winter. Fans of the Laura Ingalls Wilder books will enjoy a tour of the town that includes the DeSmet School, the Surveyor's House, the house the Pa built for the Ingalls family, and the cemetery where most of the Ingalls are buried. A must-see in De Smet is the Ingalls Homestead, where guests can walk through a replica sod house and shanty, a barn, a schoolhouse, and can participate in time-period activities like pumping water, washing clothes, making ropes and corn dolls, and playing button buzzers, the string game that Laura and her friends played. After a ride in a horse drawn wagon, visitors attend a Pageant with local actors depicting Laura's time in De Smet. Cheap Family Travel had a great visit in De Smet. If you are a fan of Laura's books or the TV series, De Smet is the place for you.

Road Ready Campground Reviews, the Ingall's Homestead De Smet South Dakota. During our Fulltime families caravan west, we went and stayed in one of the 4 RV spots at the actual homestead. We had power and electric, but no sewer. The views were spectacular.

Belle Fourche - South Dakota
In this episode of Cheap Family Travel ( Nick Regan, Maggie, and Kate made a stop in Belle Fourche to stand in the center of the US. Belle Fourche South Dakota is the geographical center of the United States and home to the Black Hills Round-Up. The city of Belle Fourche established the tri-state museum that features antiques and memorabilia from a by-gone era. Adjacent to the museum is a park, including picnic tables, a large grass area, flags from all 50 states, and a monument marking the center of the United States. Belle Fourche is located in northern South Dakota in the Black Hills, just north of Spearfish Canyon. Cheap Family Travel enjoyed a nice picnic lunch and visiting this uniquely special place.
Fummins Family visits little house on the Prairie in De Smet South Dakota
Fummins Family visits little house on the Prairie in De Smet South Dakota
When planning our fulltime families caravan west from the Canadian Rally, our route planner Marti said we would go to Kansas City via South Dakota, we thought she was a little off the mark. But really she couldnt have been more on it! We went to the site of one of the original Laura Ingalls Wilder homesteads. We had a great time, the kids were busy running around the prairie, learning about the early settlers, and Laura Ingall's family. We learned about, and tasted what they ate, and overall had a great visit in this small part of the country.

1880 Town, South Dakota in 4K
South Dakota's Original 1880 Town has more than 30 buildings from the 1880 to 1920 era, authentically furnished with thousands of relics, historical accounts and photographs.
Mount Rushmore
In this episode of Cheap Family Travel ( Nick, Regan, Maggie, and Kate visited Mt Rushmore South Dakota. Kids read about Mount Rushmore National Monument in school books, but to really appreciate this memorial to Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and Roosevelt, a family must visit the Black Hills of South Dakota. The best family vacations allow children to learn and have fun. Everyone will enjoy the park ranger presentations and the museum, and kids will have fun completing Junior Ranger activities and the nightly lighting of the monument. Our kids learned who is on Mount Rushmore and why and all about Mt. Rushmore. The visitors center at Mount Rushmore Memorial teaches visitors about the faces of Mount Rushmore and the contributions of these four presidents to American history. Cheap Family Travel highly recommends Mount Rushmore, just minutes away from Custer State Park, the Crazy Horse Monument and Rapid City, South Dakota.
