Elkford is a district municipality in the southeast region of the Canadian province of British Columbia in the Rocky Mountain range, with a population of about 2,500. It is 32 km north of the junction at Sparwood, on provincial Highway 43. Outdoor recreational activities take place at Elkford throughout the year. The town and area has many kilometers of horse riding, hiking, snowmobiling and cross country ski trails, and a ski hill, Wapiti, run by Elkford resident volunteers. 1. Elk Lakes Provincial Park Elkford
The Elk Lakes cabin is an alpine hut located between the French and Italian Military Groups in the Canadian Rockies, set near the Continental Divide among massive cliff faces, waterfalls, lakes, craggy summits, and hanging icefalls in Elk Lakes Provincial Park, British Columbia. It is 62 km south of the Trans-Canada Highway in Kananaskis Country, Alberta and 104 km north of Sparwood, British Columbia. The area has many easy trails for hiking, while also providing access to more serious mountaineering objectives. In winter, ice climbs abound, and backcountry skiers will find great terrain with lots of powder. Overall, the terrain around the Elk Lakes cabin is quite similar to that near the Elizabeth Parker hut. The hut is maintained by the Alpine Club of Canada.

Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump is a buffalo jump located where the foothills of the Rocky Mountains begin to rise from the prairie 18 km west of Fort Macleod, Alberta, Canada on highway 785. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home of the museum of Blackfoot culture. Joe Crowshoe Sr. – Aapohsoy’yiis – a ceremonial Elder of the Piikani Nation in southern Alberta, was instrumental in the development of the site. The Joe Crow Shoe Sr. Lodge is dedicated to his memory. He dedicated his life to preserving Aboriginal culture and promoting the relationship between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people and in 1998 was awarded the National Aboriginal Achievement Award for saving the knowledge and practices of the Blackfoot people.

The ski season starts in mid December and runs until early April. The Frank Slide was a rockslide that buried part of the mining town of Frank, Northwest Territories, Canada at 4:10 am on April 29, 1903. Over 82 million tonnes of limestone rock slid down Turtle Mountain within 100 seconds, obliterating the eastern edge of Frank, the Canadian Pacific Railway line and the coal mine. It was one of the largest landslides in Canadian history and remains the deadliest, as between 70 and 90 of the town's residents were killed, most of whom remain buried in the rubble. Multiple factors led to the slide: Turtle Mountain's formation left it in a constant state of instability. The Bar U Ranch National Historic Site, located near Longview, Alberta, is a preserved ranch that for 70 years was one of the leading ranching operations in Canada. At its peak, the ranch extended over 160,000 acres with 30,000 cattle and 1000 Percheron horses. Two owners were instrumental in the establishment of the Calgary Stampede, forming part of the Big Four. The ranch was founded by Fred Stimson, whose North West Cattle Company kept cattle on 147,000 acres of open range between 1881 and 1902. Stimson used the Bar U brand for NWCC stock. BC Hwy 3: Cranbrook - Fernie BC (Time Lapse)

Highway 3 follows the southern-most pass through the Canadian Rockies (Crowsnest Pass). In this video, we travel the 96 km between Cranbrook and Fernie, British Columbia. The last 1/3 of the video is the most impressive as we have to make our way through a narrow pass just before Fernie. I recorded the Crowsnest Pass in a separate video, so look for that at a later date!

Crowsnest Pass - Driving from Alberta to Sparwood, British Columbia (BC) - Highway Drive Tour

There's a bit of life around the Crowsnest Pass in Alberta, Canada.

We officially go over the border of Alberta and BC at 14:15 (see the sign to the right). By 20:27 we are about to enter Sparwood.

6:38 has probably the biggest roadkill I've seen in my life. Let's slow down for the animals...
