Brittany in the rugged west of France features picturesque old towns, castles and fortresses plus austere mediaeval cathedrals. Nostalgia and romantic harbour villages still exist here and it is also a land of menhirs and fishermen.Rennes is the capital of the region and it is here that our journey through Brittany begins. It is a small town in which both mediaeval and classical buildings stand side by side. In 1720 a disastrous fire that raged for seven days destroyed a number of historic houses. Several crooked, partly renovated frame-work houses are situated in the alleys of the old town, their carved windows and oriels create a medieval atmosphere. Thirty two kilometres south is Vitré, a picture postcard town with a city wall, narrow lanes and a castle. English troops besieged the town for many years until the lords of the castle finally paid a large ransom for their freedom. Le Mont Saint Michel with its historic buildings is located on an eighty metre high granite mound and is like something from a fairytale. Powerful fortifications surround the small town and the abbey at the top of the rock. Due to its unique location and architectural splendour this picturesque village is often referred to as the Wonder Of The Occident. Dinan is a small enchanting French town on the banks of the Rance is one of the most beautiful and well preserved mediaeval towns in Brittany. The western part of France has many faces and Brittany truly is a land of myths, castles, fishing villages and historic old towns.

Quimper is a city in Brittany, northwest France. Near the old town, and its half-timbered houses, the Gothic-style Quimper Cathedral features soaring twin spires. The Breton County Museum has archaeological finds and traditional Breton costumes. The Fine Arts Museum holds European paintings, with a focus on regional art. Southwest of the center, the Faience Museum displays the city’s distinctive faience pottery.
Quimper is a popular and interesting town in south-west Brittany, and it is the capital (prefecture) of the Finistere department. The town is also in an attractive setting, in a pretty valley at the confluence of the Odet and Steir rivers. Although the history of Quimper dates back to roman times it was in medieval times that the town became an important regional centre. The town became wealthy from the 17th century onwards due to and the growth of the pottery making industry here.
Quimper has quite a large historic centre and plenty to explore - a visit is recommended when you are in this part of Finistere. Your visit will almost certainly start in the large square in front of the cathedral, Place Saint-Corentin: this is the eastern end of the old town and within easy reach of all the most important attractions. Most of the historic centre is pedestrianised making it very pleasant and safe to explore.
The cobbled streets and paved squares in the old town to the north of the River Odet - the large river that runs through the heart of Quimper - and around the smaller Stire River that joins the Odet in the centre of town are where you will find the most interesting buildings and sights. You will come across numerous medieval half-timbered buildings as you explore and several small bridges across the river. Among the most interesting roads in the centre to see medieval houses are Rue Kéréon (straight down from the front of the cathedral) and arround the Place Terre au Duc (take the Rue de la Herse off Rue Kéréon), with others also to be found in the streets in the historic centre around the cathedral.
The Cathedral of Saint-Corentin is in the gothic style and dates from the 13th - 16th centuries. It is both the oldest and the largest building of its type in Brittany. The facade and the stained glass windows are among particular highlights although you should be aware that the stained glass windows and the two spires that dominate the front of the cathedral were only added in the 19th century when substantial renovations were carried out. To the right of the Cathedral there is another important historic monument: the Palais des Eveques was built in the middle of the 17th century and for several hundred years was home to the local bishops.
On Rue des Douves, the north-east edge of the old town, you can also see parts of the original defensive walls for this region which was known as the Ville Episcopale. The old town further to the west, beyond the Steir River, is known as the Ville des Ducs de Bretagne. There are more paved streets to explore, around the attractive Place Terre au Duc, and the Ursulines Convent is the main historic monument in this part of Quimper.
One of the best places to find these restaurants, epecially if you are looking for crepes which are remarkably popular in Brittany and come in every type and flavour imaginable, are in and around the Place au Beurre: follow Rue Elie Freron north from Place Saint-Corentin then left after 100 metres on Rue du Sallé. Place au Beurre is also very pretty so take a look even if you are not searching for a creperie!
If you are looking for art and culture you will enjoy visiting the Quimper Museum of Fine Arts (Musee des Beaux Arts) on the north side of Place Saint-Corentin which has some interesting paintings by local artists (including those from the so-called Pont-Aven school of painting); and the Museum of Breton History (next to the cathedral in the Palais des Evêques) also has some interesting exhibits about the history of the town and region.
After exploring the historic centre you can also take a stroll along the River Odet. Although the buildings here are less ancient it is a pleasant walk and you can also see the imposing renaissance style Hotel de Préfecture on the south side of the river, built around 1904-1910.

Brest is a port city in Brittany, in northwestern France, bisected by the Penfeld river. It’s known for its rich maritime history and naval base. At the mouth of the Penfeld, overlooking the harbor, is the National Navy Museum, housed in the medieval Château de Brest. Across the river stands Tour Tanguy, a medieval tower. To the northeast are the National Botanical Conservatory and the Océanopolis aquarium.
Brest is Brittany’s second largest administrative centre, and has a great deal to offer. Although it was heavily bombed in 1944, this is by no means the town’s most interesting feature: it has rebuilt itself around a vision of the future, with incredible constructions like the Pont de l'Iroise bridge, which crosses the river Elorn. An amazing feat of architecture, this magnificent cable-stayed bridge was opened in 1994. Admire it from Albert Louppe bridge, which is for pedestrians and cyclists only. It’s a great place to take a walk and enjoy the view of the famous Brest harbour, the ‘Rade de Brest’, a sheltered area of the sea big enough for great ships to lie at anchor.
Brest is a city in the Finistère département in Brittany. Located in a sheltered position not far from the western tip of the peninsula, and the western extremity of metropolitan France, Brest is an important harbor and the second French military port after Toulon. The city is located on the western edge of continental Europe. With 142,722 inhabitants in a 2007 census, Brest is at the centre of Western Brittany's largest metropolitan area (with a population of 300,300 in total), ranking third behind only Nantes and Rennes in the whole of historic Brittany, and the 19th most populous city in France; moreover, Brest provides services to the one million inhabitants of Western Brittany.
Although Brest is by far the largest city in Finistère, the préfecture (regional capital) of the department is the much smaller Quimper.
During the Middle Ages, the history of Brest was the history of its castle. Then Richelieu made it a military harbour. Brest grew around its arsenal, until the second part of the 20th century. Heavily damaged by the Allies' bombing raids during World War II, the city centre was completely rebuilt after the war. At the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century, the deindustrialization of the city was followed by the development of the service sector. Nowadays, Brest is an important university town with 23,000 students.[3] Besides a multidisciplinary university, the University of Western Brittany, Brest and its surrounding area possess several prestigious French elite schools such as École Navale (the French Naval Academy), Télécom Bretagne and the Superior National School of Advanced Techniques of Brittany (ENSTA Bretagne, formerly ENSIETA). Brest is also an important research centre, mainly focused on the sea, with among others the largest Ifremer (French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea) centre, le Cedre (Centre of Documentation, Research and Experimentation on Accidental Water Pollution) and the French Polar Institute.
Brest’s history has always been linked to the sea: the Académie de Marine (Naval Academy) was founded in 1752 in this city. The aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle was built there. Every four years, Brest hosts the international festival of the sea, boats and sailors: it is a meeting of old riggings from around the world (Les Tonnerres de Brest).

Le Croisic and the Salt of Guérande - France 4K Travel Channel
Le Croisic lies at the western end of the Guérande peninsula. The commune is only accessible via a narrow land bridge. The picturesque village with its harbor nestles along the coast, that surrounds it on 3 sides, on the headland.
A car is not absolutely necessary, everything is within easy walking distance. As an end-point of the TGV route Paris simmers Montparnasse over Nantes and Saint-Nazaire, the commune is quickly reachable by train from all over.
You find sandy beaches to take a swim, as well as a rough rocky coastline, the preferred home of the birds.
On the northern shore of the bay one can recognize Pen Bron. Once founded as a monastery, it was later converted into a fortress and then to a hospital. Today, it is the center for the treatment of scoliosis and polio in France.
However, there still is another treasure in the bay north of Le Croisic. The Guérande salt. Guérande is a small medieval town surrounded by powerful fastening walls. It is center of the salt extraction.
But the real salt extraction is carried out in Saillé, a village between Guérande and Le Croisic. In the House of salt gardener, the salt is cleaned and dried. At the same time you find a visitor center with multimedia presentations and knowledgeable guides. As we have to continue our journey, we don't pay a visit this time.
Anyone driving through the bay (Marais salants), sees the endless salt flats, where the salt is extracted from seawater.
At dusk, we reach Saint-Nazaire where we cross the muzzle of the Loire on the way to Nantes.

Le Croisic liegt am westlichen Ende der Halbinsel Guérande. Der Ort ist nur über eine schmale Landbrücke erreichbar. Der pittoreske Ort mit seinem Hafen schmiegt sich entlang der Küste, die ihn von 3 Seiten umfasst, auf die Landzunge.
Ein Auto ist nicht zwingend erforderlich, alles ist bequem zu Fuß zu erreichen. Als Endpunkt der TGV Strecke Paris Gare Montparnasse über Nantes und Saint-Nazaire, ist auch der Ort rasch mit der Bahn von überall her erreichbar.
Sandstrände zum Baden sind ebenfalls vorhanden, genau so wie raue felsige Küstenabschnitte, die bevorzugte Heimat der Vögel sind.
Am nördlichen Ufer der Bucht ist Pen Bron erkennbar. Einst als Kloster gegründet, wurde es später in eine Befestigungsanlage und dann in ein Hospital umgewandelt. Heute ist es das Zentrum für die Behandlung von Skoliose und Polio in Frankreich.
In der Bucht nördlich von Le Croisic gibt es aber noch einen anderen Schatz. Das Salz aus Guérande. Guérande ist eine mittelalterliche Kleinstadt, die mit mächtigen Befestigungsmauern umgeben ist. Sie ist Zentrum der Salzgewinnung. Doch die eigentliche Salzgewinnung erfolgt in Saillé, einem kleinen Dorf zwischen Guérande und Le Croisic. Im Haus der Salzgärtner wird das Salz gereinigt und getrocknet. Gleichzeitig ist es ein Besucherzentrum mit multimedialen Vorführungen und sachkundigen Führern. Aber wir verschieben den Besuch, da wir unsere Reise fortsetzen müssen
Wer durch die Bucht (Marais salants) fährt, sieht die endlosen Salinen, in denen das Salz aus dem Meerwasser gewonnen wird.
Mit einfallender Dämmerung erreichen wir Saint-Nazaire, wo wir auf dem Weg nach Nantes die Mündung der Loire überqueren.
