Rodney Dangerfield, Ham/Eppeville, 18 May 1917
18 May 1917 @ 06h00 Patrol our lines SW of Cambrai
At briefing we were informed we would be making an OP SW of Cambrai on our side of the lines at 13,000 ft. The wind was 6 kn from the North with scattered high cumulus.
Again Thaw lead the flight with Parsons, Haviland, Lufbery, myself, Chatagnon, Johnson and Saubiran in tow. Again I was advised to stay out of combat and observe from a safe height and distance. Chatagnon was to again be my wing for this mission. We quickly broke from the briefing and headed out to our craft waiting on the lines. As I approached my N17 I noticed that the fitters had taken some artistic license and added my initials behind the squadron logo. Chatagnon patted me on the back as I had come to a full stop, and quickly stated, “Now we will know it’s you when you do something wrong.”, and then chuckling, headed for his craft.
The mission was again quiet and peaceful as we climbed to our designated cruising altitude. We reached the lines and turned North following it for some distance, at which point we turned south west. About 10 minutes later I saw the flight swing hard port as Thaw led us off the designated course. Scanning the skies I noted 6 specs approaching, at which point I climbed for altitude and a safe vantage point for what was likely to be a good scrap. Chatagnon stayed with me as we climbed well above the specs. Soon two of those specs decided to come and investigate us and as instructed I maintained a height advantage avoiding a scrap unless it became inevitable. That soon turned out to be the case. Two Alb DIII’s were intent on double teaming me and I continued to avoid and keep height advantage until the opportunity came to rake one in passing. He broke away but his wingman sent a few rounds through my left plane. Now one on one we continued to circle and dance and my nimble Nieup gradually allowed me opportunities to smack him with a few rounds as I caught up with his six. In one instance I saw some smoke a debris break from the engine of the Alb and he took evasive action diving and then breaking for home. I continued the chase and managed to down him just over the lines. It was my first kill and it struck me somewhat as I watched him imbed his craft in the earth followed by a puff of smoke and spray of soil. I turned for our lines and landed at Lechelle where the rest of the flight had already landed. Congrats were received all round over breakfast, although it was somewhat dampened by the fact that both Thaw and Parsons had been lightly wounded in the conflict, Parsons having totalled his craft on landing.
Chatagnon accompanied me to the reporting office where I made my first claim, identifying it as an Alb DIII with a red wide ribbon running the length of both sides of the fuselage. The kill was confirmed the following day as the craft of Friedrich Paul Kempf, Jasta 2. An ace pilot for the huns.
