Forgotten History: Glade of the Armistice

Here at a forested railroad crossing outside Compiègne in Picardy, France, two rail cars met in November of 1918 - one with members of the Allied/Entente high commend and ones with representatives of Imperial Germany. They met here to end 5 years of slaughter; the German delegation being presented terms for armistice by the Allies. Faced with no other viable option, they would accept these terms, and the fighting officially ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day or the 11th month of 1918. More than a year would go by before the Treaty of Versailles was fully ratified, but it was here that the decision to end the death was made.
The rail car in which the papers were signed was kept as a monument here, along with a rather pointed monument to the French dead, featuring a slain German Imperial eagle. A large stone message was also put up in the center of the clearing, reading (in translation):
Here on the 11th of November 1918 succumbed the criminal pride of the German reich, vanquished by the free peoples which it tried to enslave.
When France signed an armistice with Germany in 1940, Hitler would have those papers signed here as well, in that very same rail car. The car was then taken to Berlin as a trophy, and the monuments here destroyed. The car itself was burned accidentally in 1945, but the monuments were rebuilt by the French following the war, and a sister car is now on display here with many of the original artifacts of the Armistice (which were hidden from the Germans in 1940).

US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump left Elysee Palace after meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron ahead of WWI armistice centenary commemorations, on Saturday.
The commemorations mark the 100th anniversary of the Armistice, the ceasefire signed at Compiegne on November 11, 1918 ending the Great War.
French President Emmanuel Macron will host around 60 world leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Trump for a ceremony at the Arc de Triomphe.

Armistice Day: Macron and Merkel mark end of World War One
French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel have left their own mark of reconciliation at the start of events to mark the centenary of the end of World War One.They signed a book of remembrance in a railway carriage identical to the one in which the 1918 Armistice was sealed.US President Donald Trump is among world leaders attending the events.But Mr Trump caused controversy by cancelling a trip to a US cemetery on Saturday because of bad weather.The day had a tense beginning amid a row between Mr Trump and Mr Macron over European defence.
The French leader said the EU needed a joint army now that the US was pulling out of a key disarmament treaty with Russia.Mr Trump described the comments as insulting and said Europe should pay its share of costs within Nato, the Euro-Atlantic alliance.After a meeting at the Elysée Palace, Mr Macron said he agreed that Europe should pay more.What happened at the Armistice site?Mrs Merkel became the first German leader since World War Two to visit the forest near the town of Compiègne in northern France where the Armistice was signed.She and Mr Macron unveiled a plaque to Franco-German reconciliation, laid a wreath and signed a book of remembrance in a replica of the railway carriage used 100 years ago.
The moment was doubly significant because Adolf Hitler used the same carriage to accept France's capitulation to Nazi Germany in June 1940.Around 70 world leaders are gathering in Paris for the events. Mr Macron will lead the main event of the centenary - a sombre commemoration on Sunday at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a memorial to France's fallen under the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.Sunday afternoon will see Mr Macron and Mrs Merkel attend a peace conference - the Paris Peace Forum - with leaders including Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkey's Recep Tayyip Erdogan.Why did

French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel unveiled a commemorative plaque to Franco-German reconciliation to mark the centenary of the end of World War One (WWI) at the Glade of the Armistice memorial in Compiegne on Saturday.
The commemorations mark the 100th anniversary of the Armistice, the ceasefire signed at Compiegne on November 11, 1918 ending the Great War.
The Glade of the Armistice is built on the site where the the Allies reached agreement with Germany. After unveiling the plaque, Merkel and Macron signed a book of remembrance in a replica of the carriage used to seal the armistice 100 years ago.
