The borzoi was originated in 17th century in Russia. When Arabian grey hounds were crossed with a thick coated Russian aristocracy for hundreds of years, untill 1936 the borzoi was known as the Russian Wolfhound. Borzoi means swift in Russian ..
Borzois are large Russian sighthounds, as the the name sighthound suggests these dogs have an amazingly wide field of vision, their almond shaped eyes give them a 270 degree field of sight. The borzoi is a quiet, but athletic dog, Most of them are silent , barking only very rarely, They are extremely smart and requires experienced handling. They were used by hunters to locate wolves.
Borzois come in many colours, their coat is silky and flat. Male Borzoi weigh more than 45 kg and they stand at least 30 inches at the shoulder while the height of females is around 26 inches.
These dogs Naturally experience enormous growth in the first year or two of their lives. So its widely accepted that forcing even faster growth by feeding a high energy diet is dangerous for their skeletal devolopment , causong unsoundness and increased tendency to joint problems and injury. It takes 3 years for a borzoi head to mature and reach its final shape.
Borzois become bored easily , sometimes they can be stubborn if not properly motivated they love the chasing games.
their litter size is between 1 to 11 puppies.
Borzoi, can reach speeds of 35-40 miles per hour on the run.
In 1891 the Borzoi was officially recognized by the AKC .The first registered dog was named princess Irma.
According to the AKC the borzoi is the 99th most popular dog breed in America.
Their life span is 10-12 years, Median life span based on a UK kennel club survey is 9 years 1 month, the longest lives dog of this breed lived to 14 years 3 months.
