Iceland is a true dream destination for outdoor lovers & landscape photographers due its impressive, dramatic landscape. It is a volcanically and geologically active Nordic island country of Europe located in the North Atlantic Ocean. With its volcanoes, guysers, geothermal hot springs and its many waterfalls as well as glaciers it truly is the often claimed land of fire and ice.
Traveling Icelands Ring Road is the perfect way to get to know the country on and off the tourist paths. Therefore we took about 2 weeks to get to know Iceland properly by exploring waterfalls, canyons, hot springs, glacier caves, black beaches and of course the stunning coastlines all around the island finishing off in Reykjavik with the countries biggest music festival called „Iceland Airwaves“

Iceland Vacation Travel Guide | Expedia
With a population of only 300,000, Iceland can feel like the most isolated place on earth, yet its capital Reykjavik, is only a three-hour flight from London and just under six from New York.
Reykjavik is relaxed and welcoming, yet possesses a cultural life that holds its own against other European capitals. Most buildings are built simple and low to beat the North Atlantic winds. However, the city is also graced with grand civic architecture inspired by Iceland’s natural beauty, such as the soaring central tower of Hallgrímskirkja.
Many of the country’s most popular sights are within easy reach of Reykjavík. Immerse yourself in the spirit of Iceland, at the Blue Lagoon. Then spend a day or two in The Golden Circle, an area which encompasses three of Iceland’s greatest natural wonders; Thingvellir National Park, the Geysir Geothermal Field, and Gullfoss.
Iceland’s main ring road strings together an endless series of epic landscapes. Less than two hours drive east of Reykjavik are two of the world’s most beautiful waterfalls, Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss. Continue eastward towards Vík, Iceland’s southern-most village, where you’ll find the dramatic landscapes of Black Beach, Reynisdrangar, and Dyrholaey. Follow the ring road for another two hours into the ethereal light of Jökulsárlón Lake, where icebergs break away from Europe’s largest glacier and float for years before tumbling out to sea.
Head north and feel the earth rumble at Europe’s mightiest waterfall, Dettifoss. Then explore the Myvatn region, a tranquil lake surrounded by nature in all its violent beauty. Take a careful walk through the boiling landscape of Namafjall, lose yourself amid the lava pillars of Dimmuborgir, and peer into the caldera of Krafla Volcano.
Known as the Capital of the North, Akureyri is the perfect place to warm up and enjoy some creature comforts, before heading off into the wilds again. In Iceland, every side road is a story waiting to unfold. So come, and live your own Icelandic story, it’s one you’ll keep telling for the rest of your days.

My favorite THINGS TO DO in Iceland::
► Reykjavik & Golden Circle
Iceland's capital city and home to 122,000 people. Reykjavik is the largest city in Iceland and most traveler's jumping off point for the Ring Road and Golden Circle.
The Golden Circle is a popular tourist driving route in southern Iceland, which covers about 300 kilometers looping from Reykjavík into the southern uplands of Iceland and back. There are many Golden Circle tours, but I would recommend doing this with a rental car. Featured attractions include Geysir, Blue Lagoon and Gullfoss waterfall.
One of my favorite things to do in Iceland in this region is the Reykjadalur Hot Springs - A beautiful and unique geothermal river near the town of Hveragerði. It takes about one hour to hike up to the hot springs, so be prepared.
► Central Highlands
► Northern Iceland
Eyjafjörður Fjord - One of the best places in Iceland to see the Northern Lights. Northern Iceland has very little light pollution, so tracking the Northern Lights over the Fjords is a great idea.
Ásbyrgi Canyon - This massive canyon was formed way back after the ice age as melting glacier floods ripped giant divots into the earth and left this beautiful valley and rock walls in its path.
Northern Lights - In order to have the best chance of seeing the Northern Lights in Iceland, check out this website we used to track the cloud coverage and aurora activity.
Dettifoss Waterfall - Said to be Europe’s most powerful waterfall, and we’re getting a unique perspective - by moonlight.
► Western Iceland & Snæfellsnes Peninsula
Godafoss Waterfall - An expansive horseshoe-shaped cascade that’s probably my favorite waterfall of the entire trip.
► Eastern Iceland
Hverir or Namafjall geothermal field - Located in northeastern Iceland around the geothermal region of Lake Mývatn - a vast area of hot springs, sulfur crystals, and boiling mud pots.
► Southern Iceland
Seljalandsfoss - A popular waterfall in South Iceland, and the only waterfall (that I know of) in Iceland that you can walk behind.
Skogafoss - Massive curtain waterfall with a drop of 60 meters and a width of 25 meters, also in Southern Iceland.
Reynisfjara - Incredible black sand beach near Vik with basalt sea stacks to one side and rock formations jetting out of the ocean. Get here early to really appreciate it.

Geysir Hot Springs in Iceland
Gaysir is located in Haukadalur valley, a geothermal area of more than 50 hot springs and multicolored mudpots in southwest Iceland
There are two geysers, which are called Geysir and Strokkur.
Litli Geysir
There are about thirty much smaller geysers and hot pools in the area. The first named pool on the path is Litli Geysir ('Little Geysir'). The thick, boiling fluids with the sulfurous smell looks like an abandoned witches' cauldron. It doesn't spout like its bigger namesake, but just keeps a constant bubble.
Like many of the other pools, the little geyser does not have the buildup of steam that creates the spectacular eruptions in the active geysers naturally tied into earthquake activity in the area.
Strokker, the Churn
Strokkur geyser at Geysir Hot Springs Geothermal Area in IcelandThis one is still very active. It may be smaller than the 70 to 80 meter high plume of steam that Great Geysir produces, but the 25 to 35 meters high eruption of steam is an amazing sight

My Iceland Trip - The Blue Lagoon, Reykjavik, Waterfalls and Geysers
Tara flies to Iceland and drives around to visit some popular sights: The city of Reykjavik, the Blue Lagoon, Skogafoss, Seljalandsfoss, and Gullfoss Waterfalls and Geysir. The best places to visit starting at Hallgrimskirkja Church, Reykjavik, Iceland and around the Golden Circle. It features a visit to the interesting Cafe Babalu with many international currencies hanging around their restaurant, and their Star Wars rest room. Harpa Concert Hall, Perlan Museum, and Sun Voyager dreamboat sculpture are worth visiting if you roam around the city. The Great Geysir and Gullfoss waterfalls are the best on the Golden Circle.
