Young People Voicing Peace
Inspired by the work of Lee Karen Stow for the ‘Women, war and peace’ exhibition, and linked to the commemorations for the First World War, students from six selected secondary schools were asked to look at the ways in which people in Wales has responded to war and searched for peace and in the last 100 years. The students were encouraged to produce short films or digital stories, responding to a chosen theme, from historical stories (the war effort, conscientious objection to military recruitment) to current affairs (women’s rights, the refugee crisis). Over the course of two days, the students worked closely with Ffotogallery tutor Michal Iwanowski and Wales for Peace learning coordinator Jane Harries, exercising their research skills, image making skills, and finally editing skills. In total, 23 diverse and exciting films have been produced, showcasing the students’ creative and often innovative approach to their chosen topics.
These films will be kept permanently on the Wales for Peace ‘peace map’, and will form the basis of the Wales for Peace/National Assembly schools conference in September.
Yn sgîl ysbrydoliaeth gan waith Lee Karen Stow ar gyfer arddangosfa 'Menywod, Rhyfel a Heddwch', ac yn gysylltiedig â chofio’r Rhyfel Byd Cyntaf, gofynnwyd i ddisgyblion o chwech ysgol uwchradd benodol edrych ar y ffyrdd y mae pobl yng Nghymru wedi ymateb i ryfel ac wedi ceisio heddwch, a hynny dros y 100 mlynedd diwethaf. Anogwyd y disgyblion i gynhyrchu ffilmiau byr neu straeon digidol, gan ymateb i thema a ddewiswyd, o straeon hanesyddol (ymdrech y rhyfel, gwrthwynebiad cydwybodol i recriwtio milwrol) i faterion cyfoes (hawliau menywod, yr argyfwng ffoaduriaid). Dros gyfnod o ddau ddiwrnod, gweithiodd y disgyblion yn agos gyda Michal Iwanowski, tiwtor o’r Ffotogallery a Jane Harries, cydlynydd dysgu Heddwch i Gymru i ymarfer eu sgiliau ymchwil, eu sgiliau gwneud delweddau, a’u sgiliau golygu. Mae cyfanswm o 23 o ffilmiau amrywiol a chyffrous wedi’u cynhyrchu, sy’n arddangos dull creadigol ac arloesol y disgyblion, yn aml, o ran y pynciau a ddewiswyd ganddynt.
Cedwir y ffilmiau hyn yn barhaol ar 'fap heddwch' Heddwch i Gymru, a byddant yn sail ar gyfer cynhadledd Heddwch i Gymru Ysgolion / Cynulliad Cenedlaethol Cymru ym mis Medi.

Roman Marching Camp, Rhondda
This large temporary marching camp lies in the St Gwynno Forest some 9½ miles west of the fort at Gelli-gaer in Mid-Glamorgan. The encampment encloses the summit of Twyn-y-Briddallt (alt. 1,488 ft; 453.5 m) to the north-west of Carn-y-Pigwn (1,542 ft; 470 m) where the Roman engineers utilized the Craig-y-Gilwern ridge, which towers above the town of Ferndale in the Rhondda Fach, to form the south-western defences of their encampment, with the north-eastern defences aligned parallel to this ridge some distance beyond the summit of Twyn-y-Briddallt. The camp has been attributed to the campaigns of Sextus Julius Frontinus sometime during the period A.D.73 to 78, along with other large camps at Blaen-cwm-Bach and Pen-y-Coedcae.
