Isla Grande De Chiloe Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Isla Grande de Chiloe in Chile.
The Isla Grande De Chiloé is located off the west coast of southern Chile in the Pacific Ocean. It features amazing timber-built churches, an undulating landscape and villages supported by posts. In the small village of Chacao there is a large wooden church one of more than a hundred and fifty that are scattered across the island. Two wooden towers with blue peaks flank the main entrance gate. Striking architecture that unites European design with that of this region. Everything is made of wood with not a single nail used. Fourteen of the churches have been designated as Unesco World Heritage sites since the year 2000. When in 1567 the Spaniard, Francisco De Ulloa, discovered the island, he founded Castro, its imposing cathedral having been built in 1906. It has two pointed towers on its façade and the main building is coloured salmon pink. The church’s interior contains brownish colours with circular wooden columns and a beautiful, carved altar. Castro is the island’s oldest town and also the capital of Chiloé Province. Along the waterfront are numerous colourful wooden houses on posts, the Palafitos. When viewed from the street, the houses look like normal buildings but from the coast it can be seen that they are supported by wooden posts. At high tide the fishermen are able to land by boat directly beneath the houses and at low tide the posts are exposed in full. Today the people of Chiloé live from agriculture and fishing and tourism is also becoming increasingly important.

Chiloé Island (Isla de Chiloé), also known as Greater Island of Chiloé (Isla Grande de Chiloé), is the largest island of the Chiloé Archipelago off the coast of Chile, in the Pacific Ocean. The island is located in southern Chile, in the Los Lagos Region.
Chiloe is famous for myths and legends with roots in its native population but with some European influence. Even though the island was Christianized by Spanish conquerors (you can visit many of the Jesuit wooden churches all over the island) its inhabitants are also very superstitious. A singing, fair-haired beauty similar to the German Lorelei is called la pincoya. It is said that if she dances towards the coast the sea will bring a lot of fish. A ghost ship carrying the souls of wrecked sailors, similar to the Flying Dutchman, is called caleuche. And if someone tells you he or she was seduced in the forest, it might have been the fiura or the trauco, which is often blamed for venereal disease or an awkward pregnancy. A very pitiful figure is the invunche; as a baby his orifices, including his eyes, were closed and one leg was sewn to his back, so that he walks on three legs.
See
=============
There are quite a few local sites to be seen throughout Chiloe Island. Since it was separated by water from the mainland, many of the local traditions have been preserved here, instead of merging with the Spanish culture after the conquest.
The Bay of Caulin offers the chance to see locals actively rounding up seaweed in their daily tasks, being collected by hand and with ox-carts. The Bay of Ancud also offers great views and chances for kayaking. An old Spanish battery can also be visited on the North side of the bay. The Puñihuil Penguin colony is located on the north side of the island along the Pacific coast. Chiloe's National Park and Ahuenca region are habitat for diverse and abundant wildlife.
Tours
============
Few tour companies offer guided tours on Chiloe Island, as most Lakes District tourism activity takes place in the areas around Osorno Volcano, Lake Llanquihue, and Pumalin Park further northeast from the island.

When the early-morning fog shrouds misty-eyed and misunderstood Chiloé, it's immediately apparent something different this way comes. Isla Grande de Chiloé is the continent's fifth-largest island and is home to a fiercely independent, seafaring people.
Immediately apparent are changes in architecture and cuisine: tejuelas, the famous Chilote wood shingles; palafitos (houses mounted on stilts along the water's edge); the iconic wooden churches (16 of which are Unesco World Heritage sites); and the renowned meat, potato and seafood stew, curanto. A closer look reveals a rich spiritual culture that is based on a distinctive mythology of witchcraft, ghost ships and forest gnomes.
All of the above is weaved among landscapes that are wet, windswept and lush, with undulating hills, wild and remote national parks, and dense forests, giving Chiloé a distinct flavor unique in South America.
Chiloé Island is the largest island in Chile. It's a popular place to visit especially among Chileans who come to appreciate the island character, the rural landscape, the seafood and the Unesco churches. The best time to visit the island is from December to March. The island's tourist information has a great website in english with lots of information on sites, tours, excursions, dining, events, shopping etc.

There are quite a few local sites to be seen throughout Chiloe Island. Since it was separated by water from the mainland, many of the local traditions have been preserved here, instead of merging with the Spanish culture after the conquest.
The Unesco churches of Chiloe can be found mostly in the centre on the eastern side of the island. Built in the 18th and 19th centuries when Chiloé Archipelago was still a part of the Spanish Crown possessions, the churches represent the fusion of European Jesuit culture and local native peoples' skill and traditions: an excellent example of mestizo culture.
The Bay of Caulin offers the chance to see locals actively rounding up seaweed in their daily tasks, being collected by hand and with ox-carts.

Explore the islands of Lemuy, Quinchao and the peninsula of Rilan by bike or car to see some churches and enjoy the quiet rural life.

Chile - Castro on Chiloé
Castro is the largest town on the island of Chiloé in Chile. Much of the traditional life of fishermen still can be found on Chiloé. Famous are the UNESCO listed wooden churches and its colorful wooden houses on poles.
We visited Castro during our overland trip from the Netherlands to South Africa and from there on to South America.

Top 10 Places to visit along the Carretera Austral, Chile
In this video guide I summed up my personal top 10 places to visit along the Carretera Austral in the most beautifula part of Chilean Patagonia

The Carretera Austral is a mostly unpaved road that connects the most rural part of Patagonia in the very south of Chile. Tourism in this area is not as pronounced as it is in other parts of the country, as regular bus routes, accommodations and detailed info is hard to find.
But in this seclusion lies the attraction and a special charm. During my last trip I met very few travelers from Europe and North America. The locals welcomed me warmly and most attractions were not crowded.
After traveling this route twice via hitchhiking I thought it is about time that I put together a handy Carretera Austral guide which highlights the main sights along this 1200km long road. The video shows you my favorite places to visit from north to south, starting in Puerto Montt and finishing in Villa O’Higgins.
To do the Ruta 7 properly I recommend about 2 weeks - following I list all the places I visited & Things to do along the Carretera Austral:
- Fjords, Hornopiren, Pumalin Park, Chaiten
- Queulat National Park, Queulat Glacier, Puyuhuapi
- Rio Futaleufu, Futaleufu
- Cerro Castillo, Villa Cerro Castillo
- Marble Caves & Lago General Carrera, Puerto Rio Tranquilo
- Exploradores Glacier, Puerto Rio Tranquilo
- Rio Baker, Cochrane
- Caleta Tortel
- Villa O'Higgins
- O’Higgins Glacier

10. La Serena
This northern Chilean town is the second oldest in the nation. It boasts a city full of lovely architecture and a warm golden beach. La Serena has a reputation as an intellectual town, and has a number of great sights that fit this description, like an archaeological museum and astronomical observatory. Outdoor enthusiasts will love to bike through the Elqui Valley, swim, snorkel, dive and/or hike through Isla Damas, and visit the national park at Fray Jorge.
9. Santiago
The capital city is the political and cultural heart of Chile. From the high mountain views of the Cerro San Cristobal Park to the secluded history of poet Pablo Neruda’s writing retreat, there is much to see in Santiago. Top picks include skiing Valle Nevado or Portillo, wine tasting at Vina Aquitania, or visits to one of several top museums like Museo Chile de Arte Precolumbio or Museo de la Moda. For those who don’t want to spend all of their time in the city, there are amazing hiking opportunities like the steep slopes of Cajon de Maipo.
8. Chiloe Island
Chiloé Island is the largest island of the Chiloé Archipelago in the Los Lagos Region and the second-largest island in South America after Tierra del Fuego. In part because of its physical isolation from the rest of Chile, Chiloé has a very special architecture and local culture.
7. Iquique
This beautiful beach and casino town offers a vibrant boardwalk and gorgeous 19th century Georgian architecture like the Aztoreca Palace. Iquique is the Monte Carlo of Chile, and has much to offer for anyone who loves free-spirited fun. During the day, guests here can participate in world-famous surfing waves, paraglide or sand-board on the golden coast.
6. Chilean Fjords
The southern coast of Chile presents a large number of fjords and channels that provide the only access to this part of Patagonia. Sailing through this region can be an unforgettable experience. Most of the trips start from Puerto Montt and travel towards Carretera Austral, Laguna San Rafael and Puerto Natales.
5. Valparaiso
This hard-working economic port town on the coast of Central Chile was loved by the poet Pablo Neruda for its beautiful chaos. It boasts some of the first urban innovations in Latin America, like the first volunteer fire department. In addition to its working class roots, Valparaiso has a reputation for an underground street art movement.
4. Chilean Lake District
This long, lush volcanic valley region stretches from Puerto Montt in the South to Temuco in the North. It is home to dense forests, crystal-clear lakes, and snowcapped volcanoes. Before the introduction of Europeans, the lake district was thickly forested, and inhabited by the Mapuche, one of the few South American tribes to avoid being swallowed into the Incan nations.
3. San Pedro de Atacama
Popular among Chilean tourists and international visitors alike, this is one of the most visited places in Chile. San Pedro de Atacama is a town on the edge of one of the world’s most breathtaking landscapes. Austere, endless flood and salt plains surrounded by coppery mountains are plentiful, and have to be seen to be believed.
2. Torres del Paine
The “towers of blue” national park constitutes a glaciated region on the Southern tip of Chile. Three large pillars in the park give it its name, and it is also home to a number of “horns”, or other mountains, and glaciated lakes. Exploration through this park can be done via mini van tours, multi-day treks, or catamaran trips. There are a few services who will also offer horseback tours to some of the sites.
1. Easter Island
Located more than 3,500 km (2,000 miles) form central Chile, Easter Island continues to be one of the world’s great mysteries. This treeless island of hundreds of giant, hollow-eyed statues carved by its Polynesian visitors is an eerie yet beautiful example of human artistry and achievement.
