Places to see in ( Sardinia - Italy ) Ulassai
Ulassai, Ulassa in sardinian language, is a comune in the Province of Nuoro in the Italian region Sardinia, located about 70 kilometres northeast of Cagliari and about 20 kilometres southwest of Tortolì. Ulassai borders the following municipalities: Esterzili, Gairo, Jerzu, Osini, Perdasdefogu, Seui, Tertenia, Ussassai, Villaputzu.
Ulassai is a small mountain town in the heart of Ogliastra, Sardinia’s most unspoiled and authentic region. Surrounded by high limestone cliffs and at an altitude of 700 m amsl, it attracts visitors for the combination of inland Sardinia’s uncontaminated nature and authentic traditions with the beauty of the coastline, only 20 minutes away by car.
Ulassai offers, in just a few km from the village centre, a wide variety of attractions: from the distinctive limestone “tacchi”, so-called because they resemble upturned shoe heels (“tacco” means “heel” in Italian), very popular with climbers from al lover the world, to the “Su Marmuri” cavern, one of Sardinia’s most famous; from the high, foaming Lecorci and Lequarci waterfalls, which form after the autumn rains, to the Taccu plateau with its woods of centuries-old oaks and strawberry trees, through which various paths weave to offer walks with breathtaking views. In the town centre of Ulassai you can still find, almost intact, the typical architecture of the ancient Sard villages. You can admire traditional arches ( the Arco di “Barigau”, the actual entrance gate to the heart of the town and a majestic monument, what’s left ofan old town wall), cloisters and other buildings from the past which exude, still today, the odour of our forebear’s times.
Memories of ancient crafts live on among the people of Ulassai, the best example of which are the fine works of the women of the Cooperativa tessile di Su Marmuri (weaving cooperative) who, as in the past, skilfully weave their wools to create unique woven designs of important artistic and handicraft value. For a few years now, in Ulassai a process of developing this extraordinary natural heritage made of rocks, waterfalls and woods has been underway. This heritage, which for thousands of years was regarded by the Ulassai community as “merely where they worked”, is now an important resource for tourism.
Hundreds of rock climbing routes have been created along with walking paths for nature lovers, so that, over the course of about 10 years, Ulassai has become an important centre in Sardinia for outdoor sport lovers. Today Ulassai boasts some of Sardinia and Europe’s finest climbing. This, together with the works of art scattered across the area. the hiking trails, the caves and the handicrafts, make Ulassai a “must-visit” for all those who love art and nature.

Places to see in ( Lourdes - France )
Lourdes is a town in southwestern France, in the foothills of the Pyrenees mountains. It’s known for the Sanctuaires Notre-Dame de Lourdes, or the Domain, a major Catholic pilgrimage site. Each year, millions visit the Grotto of Massabielle (Grotto of the Apparitions) where, in 1858, the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to a local woman. In the grotto, pilgrims can drink or bathe in water flowing from a spring.
Lourdes is a small market town lying in the foothills of the Pyrenees. It is part of the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Occitanie region in south-western France. Prior to the mid-19th century, the town was best known for the Château fort de Lourdes, a fortified castle that rises up from a rocky escarpment at its center.
In 1858 Lourdes rose to prominence in France and abroad due to the Marian apparitions claimed to have been seen by the peasant girl Bernadette Soubirous, who was later canonized. Shortly thereafter the city with the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes became one of the world's most important sites of pilgrimage and religious tourism. Today Lourdes hosts around six million visitors every year from all corners of the world. This constant stream of pilgrims and tourists transformed quiet Lourdes into the second most important center of tourism in France, second only to Paris, and the third most important site of international Catholic pilgrimage after Rome and the Holy Land. As of 2011, of French cities only Paris had more hotel capacity.
According to believers, the Virgin Mary appeared to Marie-Bernadette Soubirous on a total of eighteen occasions at Lourdes. Lourdes has become a major place of Roman Catholic pilgrimage and of miraculous healings. The 150th Jubilee of the first apparition took place on 11 February 2008 with an outdoor Mass attended by approximately 45,000 pilgrims.
Lourdes is located in southern France in the foothills of the Pyrenees mountains near the prime meridian. It is overlooked from the south by the Pyrenean peaks of Aneto, Montaigu, and Vignemale (3,298 m), while around the town there are three summits reaching up to 1,000 m (3,280.84 ft) which are known as the Béout, the Petit Jer (with its three crosses) and the Grand Jer (with its single cross) which overlook the town. The Grand Jer is accessible via the funicular railway of the Pic du Jer. The Béout was once accessible by cable car, although this has fallen into disrepair. A pavilion is still visible on the summit.
The current municipal area of Lourdes was inhabited in prehistoric times. In Roman times it had to be, since the first century BC, an oppidum hill where today stands the fortress, as it is testified by the numerous finds came to light in the second half of the nineteenth century (remains of walls, fragments of statues and tombstones). At the foot of the citadel stood a pagan temple dedicated to the gods of water, whose buildings have come partially to light soon after the demolition of the parish of Saint Pierre
Yearly from March to October the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes is a place of mass pilgrimage from Europe and other parts of the world. The spring water from the grotto is believed by some to possess healing properties. The five-domed St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Lourdes was designed by Myroslav Nimciv, while its Byzantine interior polychrome decorations were executed by artist Jerzy Nowosielski. The church is about a 10-minute walk from the basilica and the grotto, on a street named in honour of Ukraine, 8 Rue de l'Ukraine, situated on a narrow piece of property close to the railroad station. Visible from the basilica, the height of the building makes up for its breadth.

Warsaw - the Old and the New
From the intersection of ul. Zelazna and ul. Prosta we get an idea of the mixed Warsaw. While the Central Business District and the heart of the financial centre is only one tram stop away, we see also 1950s socialist housing and pre war buildings as well as a little of the remains of the ghetto.
My channel on you tube : is one of the most prolific from Poland, although unfortunately not the most visited. With almost one film per day, one may be forgiven for thinking I do nothing else but I do have a day job as well. I have produced more than 400 original films, most in English but also in Polish, French, Italian, Spanish and the occassional hint of German and Hebrew. My big interest in life is travel and history but I have also placed films on other subjects
Please feel free to ask questions in the public area or to comment on things you disagree with. Sometimes there are mistakes because I speak without preparation. If I see the mistakes myself, I make this clear in the text. Please also leave a star rating!
There are a number of films here on the packaging industry. This is because I am the publisher of Central and Eastern European Packaging -- - the international platform for the packaging industry in this region focussing on the latest innovations, trends, design, branding, legislation and environmental issues with in-depth profiles of major industry achievers. Most people may think packaging pretty boring but it possibly effects your life more than you really imagine!
Central and Eastern European Packaging examines the packaging industry throughout this region, but in particular in the largest regional economies which are Russia, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Ukraine and Austria. That is not to say that the other countries are forgotten, they are not, but obviously there is less going on. However the fact that there are so many travel related films here is not from holidays but from business trips attending trade fairs around the region and the sites and give a pretty good idea where future films are going to come from! Every packaging trade fair is a new excuse to make another film!
In 1997 I founded Polish Business News .There are a number of business related films here and I intend to do many more on CRM (customer relations management).
My blog can be found via and and contains background information and more details of many of my films. This information is in English.
I have also a second blog on the site . This site has been recently started by a friend and I think it will soon be one of the leading travel sites in Poland, if not Central Europe. It contains additional information about some of the places and events shown in these films but most of that is in Polish.

Postać archanioła przypomina o legendarnej wizji papieża Grzegorza I Wielkiego (590 -- 604) z nim związanej. Otóż, gdy 1400 lat temu wielka zaraza pustoszyła grzeszny Rzym, papież Grzegorz wezwał wszystkich do szczerej pokuty. Sam też prowadził wielką procesję z katedry na Lateranie do grobu św. Piotra w Watykanie.

Warsaw In Your Pocket - Great Football Exhibition
A tour of the Great Football exhibition in Warsaw's Palace of Culture. The exhibition features prominently the Polish team of the 70s and early 80s, the Gorski Eagles.
It took the appointment of coach Kazimierz Górski in 1970 to make Poland a stronger team. Only eighteen months into the job Górski had led his side to the gold medal at the 1972 Olympics in Munich, with Kazimierz Deyna (later of Manchester City) scoring twice in an exciting 2-1 win over Hungary in the final.
Just a year later, one of the most famous matches in Poland's history was played at Wembley. After a heroic performance from goalkeeper Jan Tomaszewski -- nicknamed 'the clown' by Brian Clough -- a one-all draw was enough to earn Górski's side a place at the 1974 World Cup finals. Impressive performances in Germany, including defeats of Argentina and Italy and a 7-0 thumping of Haiti in the group stage, saw Poland up against the West German hosts in the semi-final. The match was played in horrible conditions on a water-logged pitch (many Polish fans will still claim the Germans watered the pitch despite heavy rain to nullify the Poles' passing game) with the only goal of the game coming from Gerd Muller. In the match for third-place Poland were better than Brazil and Grzegorz Lato, current president of the Polish FA, scored his seventh goal of the tournament winning the Golden Boot in the process (incidentally beating his strike partner Andrzej Szarmach, whose tally stood at 6).
After winning the silver medal at the 1976 Olympics, qualification for the 1978 World Cup quickly followed. An impressive start put Jacek Gmoch's squad through to the second round, but a win over Peru was not enough following defeats to Argentina (0-2, with Deyna missing a penalty) and Brazil (1-2).
A new head-coach, Antoni Piechniczek, was brought in during 1981 to try to unite an unsettled camp but as he took over the team, Martial Law was introduced in Poland hitting his team's preparations for the 1982 World Cup. With only domestic players available, Poland started with two goalless draws but then a 5-1 win over Peru saw them advance. In the next round, a fantastic performance from hat-trick hero Zbigniew Boniek gave Poland a 3-0 win over Belgium, while a solid 0-0 draw with the Soviet Union won them another semi-final place. Crucially denied the skills of the suspended Boniek, Poland suffered a 0-2 defeat to eventual winners Italy, yet an exciting 3-2 win over France in the third-place game was still regarded as a huge success back in Poland.
Poland missed out on qualification for the 1984 European Championships, while the most important legacy of a disappointing performance in the 1986 World Cup -- where an early exit was confirmed after a Gary Linekar inspired 0-3 defeat to England -- was 'Boniek's curse'. The then Roma striker concluded that Poles wouldn't see their team again at a major tournament for sixteen years.
Boniek was right. The 1990s witnessed the waste of a wonderful young team - silver medallists at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. With the domestic game sinking deeper into corruption, fans watched the disappearnce of Polish clubs from the group stage of the Champions League (Widzew Łódź were the last, in 1996). Boniek's curse ended when Jerzy Engel's team were the first European team to qualify for the 2002 World Cup, but disastrous performances against Korea (0-2) and Portugal (0-4) meant it was a short trip. Similarly poor performances meant that Poland failed to advance beyond the group stage at the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany. The Polish FA then decided that it was time to give a foreign coach a chance.
Dutchman Leo Beenhakker took on the role and he inspired the team during Euro 2008 qualification, winning 2-1 in style against Portugal thanks to Ebi Smolarek's brace. Unfortunately, while Poland yet again had enough class to qualify for the finals they could not advance from their group once at the tournament. However, failure in qualification for the 2010 World Cup saw the Dutchman unceremoniously sacked live on TV, a few minutes after the 0-3 away defeat to Slovenia, during an interview with the Polish FA president, Grzegorz Lato.
