Esztergom | Hungary #3
A visit to Esztergom in northern Hungary. Now on the Slovakian border, this town was once right at the centre of politics as the capital of the medieval kingdom of Hungary. Much of Esztergom's past is now literally buried, but there is plenty to remind the visitor of past times. The medieval ruins of the royal castle, now partially restored, are definitely worth a visit. The castle, however, is not the structure that dominates the town; the 19th-century neoclassical cathedral is the largest church in the country.
