Köszeg. Historic town centre | Hungary #12
We take to the tracks to Köszeg on the Hungarian-Austrian border. This picturesque little town is often called Hungary's jewelry box for its many pretty historic buildings. It is especially nice to dwell around Jurisics tér (Jurisics square) in the middle of the old town. Köszeg's stout castle has once held against an enormous army of invading Ottomans.

Travel video about destination Koeszeg in Hungary
The strategic location of the city of Köszeg in the west of Hungary once determined its fate. : Today Köszeg is one of Europe’s most beautiful castle cities and in the Old Town, the Gate Tower and Captain’s Residence of the main square immediately indicate the city’s long history. The whole of the main square is completely framed by picturesque Baroque buildings and their colourful facades. Köszeg survived World War II undamaged and so it is not surprising that it is known as the most beautiful city in the region. With its gate-tower, the imposing Heroes Gate provides access to the Main Square. Although built in 1932 to commemorate the four hundredth anniversary of the Turkish Siege, it blends in perfectly with the surroundings. For the Austrian Habsburgs, Köszeg acted as a bulwark designed to defend Vienna from attack by the Turks, and it worked. The impressive remains of the Synagogue, built in 1859, are a reminder of the city’s former large Jewish community. Köszeg is a jewel of history, a fairy tale idyll!

Hungary is a small country in the heart of Europe carrying a thousand year old past. Beside one of the continent’s most beautiful capitals, Budapest, most of the tourists are curious about the Puszta and the traditions of horse keeping. But how much more can Hungary offer! There are the beaches of Balaton, the warm lake of Hévíz, the cave spa of Miskolctapolca. Then there is the Dunakanyar with Szentendre, Visegrád, and Esztergom with its many monuments, the castles of Keszthely, Gödöllő, Fertőd, the forts of Eger, Sárospatak, Sümeg. Vineyards in Tokaj, Villány or Badacsony, lovely cities like Pécs, Sopron, Kőszeg, Eger. Gentle hills, temples and lookout towers, forests, museums and rivers, fine cuisine and good programs.

Hungary (Europe) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Hungary.
The land of the Magyars is considered to be one of the oldest cultural regions in Europe and whose history dates back to primeval times. Hungary is a gateway between East and West, with a remarkable past and is a diverse country of nature and culture. In 1991 the Fertö Hansag National Park was founded on the Hungarian side of Lake Neusiedl, a protected natural area in which grey Hungarian cattle populate the soda veldts of small salt ponds and where water buffalo enjoy to wallow, while a variety of water fowl stop on their annual migration. Köszeg is one of Europe’s most beautiful castle cities, with typical courtyards and the little main square has a Marian column and Captain's Gate Tower. The square is dominated by the tall facade of the Saint Emmerich Church that was built above an ossuary by the Hungarian Calvinists in around 1615. A beautiful Baroque building contains yet another treasure, the Jesuit Apoteka, in which remedies were prepared according to ancient formulae. Budapest is the capital of Hungary, pearl of the Danube and ever-changing cosmopolitan city. In the south of Pest, historic buildings are located within the Gozsdu Courtyard and close by, in the Jewish quarter, the Great Synagogue, the second largest Jewish sacred building in the world. One of the main landmarks of Hungary’s capital city is the Parlament, an imposing Neo-Gothic building located alongside the Danube on the banks of Pest. At the confluence of the Tisza and Bodrog, within the northern tongue of Puszta, is the world famous wine growing region of Tokaj where the tradition of wine growing goes back several centuries and brought the area much prosperity. The southern Hungarian town of Kalocsa is located near the Danube and is a centre of paprika growing and folk culture that is well worth a visit. Hungary is a land of many faces, a glorious gem set in the heart of Europe.

Sopron. Historic city centre | Hungary #10
A visit to Sopron in north-western Hungary on the Austrian-Hungarian border. Roman in origin, Sopron experienced its heyday in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Most of the town was destroyed during a great fire in 1676. After this tragedy, many buildings were rebuilt in baroque style. This is the Sopron we still see today.

Pécs: Early Christian graves to Ottoman mosques | Hungary #7
The first of two videos of my visit to Pécs. Pécs is one of the most interesting places in Hungary. This area has been inhabited for a long time and the peoples who lived here have left their marks. Pécs was known in Roman times as Sopianae. The plural form of the name suggests that it started out as a cluster of settlements. The first wall around the fortress (now the site of the cathedral and the episcopal palace) was built in the 4th century CE and some significant remains of this era can still be seen today. Pécs developed in the Middle Ages and was then known as Quinque Ecclesiae which means 'Five Churches'. The Ottomans captured Pécs in 1529. Two mosques built during this era survive today and are the prime examples of Turkish architecture in Hungary.
