Lanzarote is a Canary Island in the Atlantic Ocean. Lanzarote is approximately 125 km (78 mi) off the coast of Africa. The island is covering 845.94 square kilometers (327 sq mi) and it is the fourth largest of the islands in the archipelago. The Timanfaya National Park is one of the main attractions of Lanzarote.
The famous artist Cesar Manrique was born on Lanzarote. After he came back from New York he had a major influence on the planning regulations in Lanzarote. This has resulted that you still cannot find high rise hotels on Lanzarote.
On the Lanzarote Island you can find a lot of the art of Cesar Manrique: a lot of windmills, the Museum Cesar Manrique, the Cesar Manrique Foundation, Mirador del Rio, Jameos del Agua, the Jardin de Cactus and the Monumento al Campesino.
You can visit this all on your cloudy days on Lanzarote. However, the main goal of your trip to Lanzarote will certainly be the beaches on the east and south of Lanzarote. The most famous beach is the Papagayo Beach on the south of the island near Playa Blanca.
The capital of Lanzarote is Arrecife. You can find the airport close to the city.

Things to do in Lanzarote
Lanzarote is a stunning island in the Canary Islands with plenty of things to do. If you want to plan in advance, these are our top six things to do when visiting Lanzarote:
#1: Visit Timanfaya National Park: incredible volcanic landscapes, a moon-like setting, Timanfaya is a must see for anyone traveling to Lanzarote
#2: La Geria: you may not know that the volcanic grounds of Lanzarote produce some of the finest wines in the world, especially white wine. The special weather conditions, mainly the wind and the scarce rain, make vineyards look completely different than anywhere else. Go to the La Geria region and visit a local winery.
#3 La Graciosa: It is a small island, around 10 square miles and fewer than 1,000 inhabitants, located a few miles off the northern coast of Lanzatote. No asphalt, no cars (except for some old jeeps owned by locals) and, actually no 21st or 20th centuries either...it has some of the most beautiful islands you will ever see. To get to La Graciosa you need to get a small ferry from the village of Orzola.
#4: Late local artist César Manrique, a world class architect and painter, helped redefined the island in the 60's and 70's. His house is nowadays a small museum worth visiting where local nature and architecture blend seamlessly
#5 Everybody or at least many people love street markets. You have plenty of them in Lanzarote, almost every single day of the week. But the main one with many different things to do and see is the Teguise market on Sunday mornings
#6: Finally go for a camel ride at Timanfaya. Especially if you travel with kids, this is a must not miss attraction in your holidays in Lanzarote.
