The Santa Fe Trail was a 19th-century transportation route through central North America that connected Independence, Missouri with Santa Fe, New Mexico. Pioneered in 1821 by William Becknell, it served as a vital commercial highway until the introduction of the railroad to Santa Fe in 1880. Santa Fe was near the end of the El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, which carried trade from Mexico City. The route skirted the northern edge and crossed the north-western corner of Comancheria, the territory of the Comanches, who demanded compensation for granting passage to the trail, and represented another market for American traders. Comanche raiding farther south in Mexico isolated New Mexico, making it more dependent on the American trade, and provided the Comanches with a steady supply of horses...

Memorial Day 2009 at Fort Larned, KS National Historical Site. In honor of the special day, at noon the regular size flag was replaced with the large garrison flag. The bugle call adds a nice touch, too. Ive helped put this flag up before its a big honkin flag!

In this video, I head over to the historic Fort McHenry located near Baltimore, MD. About 200 years before this video was recorded, the Battle of Baltimore took place where American soldiers successfully defended itself against the British navy before they retreated the morning of September 14, 1814. Francis Scott Key saw the battle from afar. When he saw the American Flag rise up from the fort that morning, he was inspired to eventually write the Star-Spangled Banner, the current national anthem of the United States.

I check out the fort area as well as views of the harbor heading over toward downtown Baltimore.
