List of cities and towns in Iceland
This is a list of cities and towns in Iceland. Some of Iceland’s larger cities and towns are also self-contained municipalities whose geography and populations are therefore equal. However, most of Iceland’s municipalities, which are semi-autonomous administrative zones, contain several disparate towns or cities, each of whose population contributes to that of its respective municipality.
In addition to Iceland's many independent towns, this article includes cities and towns whose municipalities consist of one, self-contained city of the same name, such as Hafnarfjörður and Akranes. Municipalities that are not also cities or towns, such as Árborg, are not included here, but their constituent towns and cities are. For Árborg, these include the towns of Selfoss, Eyrarbakki, and Stokkseyri.
For more information on the administrative divisions of Iceland, refer to the “Divisions” section of the Iceland infobox on this page.

Iceland Hot Spring Tour 2011
Shot video at a few spots while I was in Iceland. Everything was shot with my GoPro camera. I hate advertising that because I sent them a reel asking for a donation camera for this trip and they never mailed me back an answer. I bought one anyways because I needed a video camera for the trip.
Hot springs order:
Hrunalaug, near the town of Flúðir on the farm of the church Hruni.
Landbrotalaug, on the Landbrot farm on the southern side of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula.
Hellulaug, near the campground Flókalundur in the Westfjords.
Nauteyrarlaug, on the Nateyri farm in Ísafjarðardjúp.
Gjörvidalslaug, on the inner east side of Ísafjörður literally right off the main road.
Guðrúnarlaug, in the Sælingsdlaur valley right past the Laugar pool.
Snorralaug, right below the giant, abandoned boarding school in Reykholt.
Skátalaug, lies south of lake Kleifarvatn right off road 42.
Bláa Lónið also called the Blue Lagoon. Tourist spot and hotel twenty minutes from the airport in Keflavik.
Closing shot is the scalding hot pots in the valley Klambragil next to the hot spring river.

Askja tours in Iceland with local guide - www.kip.is
Askja is a caldera located in the center of Iceland, in the mountains Dyngjufjöll. Inside the caldera is a deep lake, and a crater with geothermal water. It is sometimes suitable to bathe in it although the path down to the crater is often impassable due to how steep it is.
The trip it self to the Caldera is through the biggest desert of Iceland, called Ódáðahraun, along the glacier river Jökulsá á Fjöllum.
The tour starts early in the morning since normally the tours to Askja are about 12 hours long. Pickup is on request, most often from the guesthouses and hotels in the Laugar area, or Mývatn. From Laugar we drive along Lake Mývatn and head to the east through lava fields. At the crater Hrossaborg, we make our turn to the south on the gravel road F88. We will cross rivers on the way, fords, and the river Grafarlandaá is the first one. There we take our first stop on enjoy the pureness and beauty of the this spring fed river that comes from under the Lava field and forms a small waterfall where the ford is.
Grafarlandaá
River Grafarlandaá, here we stop after crossing a river
After that our tour leads us through lava fields with great contrasts until we reach the ford at river Lindaá, another spring fed river. Next stop is the nature reserve Herðubreiðarlindir oasis (nearby mt. Herðubreið). Here we take another stop where my guests can use the washrooms (toilets) and take a look at the special nature of this place. In Herðurbreiðarlindir, I guide my guests in a few minutes walk through the place and take you the the location where our most famous outlaw hid during the winter of 1774-1775.
Next on our way is the magnificent place and waterfall called Gljúfrasmiður, a waterfall in the glacier river Jökulsá fjöllum. It has shaped the landscape over time into forms that are hard to imagine.
We then head to Dyngjufjöll, where the Askja caldera is, but first we stop at Dreki to have lunch (there are no shops in the highland so please bring a lunch with you). After our lunch, we drive to Vikraborgir craters where we start our 2,4km walk to the crater Víti and the Lake of Askja. Vikraborgir are the craters where the NASA Apollo mission astronauts’ training took place in 1965 and 1967.
Depending on the weather and time, I sometimes take an alternative route back home. It’s accross the river of Jökulsá, over a bridge near Upptyppingar and through Krepputunga to Möðrudalur where there is a restaurant serving refreshments.
I went on up to 40 trips to Askja on a super jeep with guests July and August 201gljufrasmidur4 and it always brings me great joy and happiness to be able to show this unique area to my guests.
Tour price: ISK 140.000,- for private tour with maximum of 6 passengers. departure from your location in North East Iceland)
Tour price: ISK 35.000,- per person in a group tour with minimum of 3 passengers, maximum of 6 passengers. Departure from Laugar or Mývatn (free pickup from guesthouses and hotels in Laugar area, Reykjadalur Valley and Myvatn area)
The private and group tours are available daily on request, reservation required.
Departures are optional for private tour: Pick up at your selected location, for example Laugar, Akureyri or Akureyri airport, Húsavík, Húsavík Airport or the Mývatn area.
Departure time is on request but I prefer not later than 8:15 since the duration of the tour is is normally around 12-13 hours.
Included is fully guided tour and transportation.
Refreshments are not included in price. Please note that there are no shops in the highlands so please bring a lunch package and drinking water along with warm clothes and hiking shoes.
Private tours can be tailor made in any way, for example, it’s possible for an extra fee to add a visit to the new Holuhraun lava field that is not far from Askja.

Landmannalaugar Highland Iceland
Part-11 Hólmur Kirkjubæjaklaustur
Landmannalaugar (Icelandic, meaning the people's pools) is a region near the volcano Hekla in southern section of Iceland's highlands.
The Landmannalaugar area is a popular tourist destination and hiking hub in Iceland's highlands. The area displays a number of unusual geological elements, like the multicolored rhyolite mountains and expansive lava fields, not far from the service center. The many mountains in the surrounding area display a wide spectrum of colors including pink, brown, green, yellow, blue, purple, black, and white. Two of the most popular mountains among hikers are Bláhnúkur (meaning blue peak) and Brennisteinsalda (meaning sulphur wave).
Landmannaluagar is a popular tourist destination. Tourists visit the area from June through late September, after which time the road is closed. A mountain lodge, in operation since 1951, can accommodate 78 people and has basic amenities. It is located centrally near natural geothermal hot springs, also popular with tourists.
Two routes lead to Landmannalaugar and one of them is accessible by regular car, though the road is rough (stones the size of fists are not uncommon). The easiest route to Landmannalaugar is to take either Rd. 30 from the mainroad and change into 32, cross the Sultartangi hydro-electric dam, going onto 26, then F208 and just before arriving in Landmannalaugar, making a right turn to F224. Road 26 can also be accessed directly from Rd. 1 just before arriving in the small village of Hella, crossing through typical Icelandic farmlands.
Icelandic horse riding is also available in the area. The horse riding trips visit places which can often be difficult to access on foot and not accessible by car as there are no official roads, as an example into Jökulgil (Glacier Valley).
From late June and through the summer, a couple from the Westfjords come and serve food and coffee to travelers in their green bus-shop, Fjallafang, as well as selling other things useful to travelers.
Landmannalaugar is the usual starting point for a four day long hiking trail aptly called Laugavegur, as the main shopping street in Reykjavík city center is called the same and is referred to the herds of people that walk the trail every day. The name actually means The Landmannalaugar Trail, Laugar being a shortened version for Landmannalaugar. The usual four day trail ends in Þórsmörk National Park, but one or two days can be added, trekking then all the way to Skógar nearly at the coast via Fimmvörðuháls between the two glaciers Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull.

Godafoss Wasserfall Island ( Iceland )
DIMMUBORGIR, GRJOTAGJA FISSURE, ICELAND
DIMMUBORGIR, GRJOTAGJA FISSURE, ICELAND
We took a walk around this fascinating area where lava rubes had formed many fascinating shapes and structures. Also a visit to a large crack/fissure which had opened up in the earth was great.
Dimmuborgir (dimmu dark, borgir cities (or forts); pronounced [tɪmʏpɔrcɪr]) is a large area of unusually shaped lava fields east of Mývatn in Iceland. The Dimmuborgir area is composed of various volcanic caves and rock formations, reminiscent of an ancient collapsed citadel (hence the name). The dramatic structures are one of Iceland's most popular natural tourist attractions.
Kirkjan (the Church), lava tube structure at Dimmuborgir
The Dimmuborgir area consist of a massive, collapsed lava tube formed by a lava lake flowing in from a large eruption in the Þrengslaborgir and Lúdentsborgir crater row to the East, about 2300 years ago. At Dimmuborgir, the lava pooled over a small lake. As the lava flowed across the wet sod, the water of the marsh started to boil, the vapour rising through the lava forming lava pillars from drainpipe size up to several meters in diameter.[4] As the lava continued flowing towards lower ground in the Mývatn area, the top crust collapsed, but the hollow pillars of solidified lava remained. The lava lake must have been at least 10 meters deep, as estimated by the tallest structures still standing.
The lava flow surface remains partly intact around the Dimmuborgir area, so that the Dimmuborgir itself sits below the surrounding surface area. The area is characterised by large hollow cell- or chamber-like structures formed around bubbles of vapour, and some dramatically standing lava pillars. Several of the chambers and pillar bases are large enough to house humans, giving rise to the term castles (borgir).
Grjótagjá marks the western margin of a fault zone where fissures have extended and faulted after the lava from Jarðbaðshólar formed some 2700 years ago. However, in the previous 5000 year period, the faulting activity was confined further to the west. There the Stóragjá fissure was formed in an 8000 year old lava of which a small portion has been preserved. One can see that the Jarðbaðshólar lava lies undisturbed across each end of the fissure. The warm water in these fissures flows to the south, where it mixes with cold groundwater and eventually reaches Lake Mývatn. During the Krafla fires, the water temperature in Stóragjá, which had been 26°C, became comfortable for bathing, whilst the water in Grjótagjá, originally 42 to 42.5°C, became too hot. The water has since gradually cooled towards the original temperature.
