The structural unit of the Latvian National History Museum Archaeological Park - museum Āraiši is located in the Amatas region in the cultural-historic area of the Gauja National Park. It covers an area of just over 12 hectares and contains two monuments of archaeological importance- the Lake Fortress of Āraiši from the Iron Age and the ruins of the Āraiši medieval stone castle.
Now it’s possible to see a reconstruction of the Lake castle from the 9th century in a full scale, open-air exposition of the ideal reconstructions of 3 separate buildings of the Stone and Bronze Ages on the so called Daughter’s Island. Here you can also experience the ruins of the medieval stone castle. The reconstruction of the Lake Castle is the only project of its kind, which has no equal in all of Northern Europe. It is based on the materials acquired in archaeological excavations and thanks to particularly favorable circumstances for preservation it gave unprecedented information about both the wooden constructions and the social life of the inhabitants. After drops in the water levels in the years 1965-1969 and 1975-1979, archaeological excavations were made in the Lake settlement. As a result, 2000 ancient artifacts were found which helped experts to collect data on the lifestyle of the Latgallians in the 9th to 10th centuries. It is now the first vastly explored monument of its type in Northern Europe thanks to the head of the archaeological exploration of the Lake and the author of reconstructions Dr. hist., archaeologist Jānis Apals.

The Venta Waterfall
The Venta waterfall (Ventas rumba) is the widest waterfall in Europe.
An interesting phenomenon can be observed near the waterfall in spring and autumn when spawning fish try to get over the waterfall by jumping through the air. While the beauty of the Venta waterfall is not the wild, breathtaking beauty of the major waterfalls in the world, the Venta waterfall and the old brick bridge still create the impression of an idyllic, quiet town. Looking from the side of the bridge, it seems to be just a small waterfall.
To appreciate its true beauty, one must spend at least ten to fifteen minutes there and climb down to one of the river banks.

Pāvilosta Parish Town Sights
Pāvilosta is home to tenacious fishermen families. The town is a paradise for Latvia's toughest windsurfers. In this town of low-rise housing, almost all the streets lead to the sea. The port, the marine, the large boulder by the sea, untouched nature and sharp sea air attracts creative people to this place. Once overrun by the Soviet Union Military, Pāvilosta now boasts a pristine beach where amber is generously washed ashore.
Pāvilosta is a quiet neat little town in Kurzeme, on the Baltic Sea coast in the West of Latvia.
The little town is a favorite with the active sports fans arriving in Pāvilosta each summer to enjoy the waves and the winds one only meets on the Pāvilosta coast.
Pāvilosta is a typical Kurzeme fishing village which has now evolved into a small town. In the middle ages, the estuary of the River Saka had an active port, but after the Polish-Russian war of the 17th century, the port was filled in and came back to life only at the end of 19th century when the river bed was deepened again. The historic part of Pāvilosta is called Āķgals, an example of the peculiar town planning and building at the end of 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, every street reaches the sea.
Pāvilosta is popular among windsurfers and kite-broadest because of the strong winds, peaceful nature and clean beaches, yet other holidaymakers also like this place very much, a tidy environment, the possibility to eat fish and to venture into the sea themselves. The history of old Pāvilosta and its environs is presented in an interesting and even unique exhibition at the Pāvilosta Museum. The Museum is located by the sea in the town's first brick building Loči.
