Ni pel seu nom ni per la seva imatge l'església té relació amb l'activitat jueva que va haver a la ciutat. No obstant això, la idea canvia en saber que l'espai actual que avui ocupa l'església de Sant Jaume, al carrer Ferran, va ser durant segles l'antiga sinagoga de la ciutat.
L'església es troba alineada en aquest carrer, de gran activitat comercial, amb la resta d'edificis, bars i restaurants. Per això, és convenient aturar-se a contemplar el seu interior i reparar en els detalls de la seva façana.
El carrer Ferran s'emmarca en l'antic Call menor, la zona que es va crear en ampliar el tradicional barri jueu. Els dos barris estan comunicats actualment per la Volta del Remei o l'Arc de Santa Eulàlia, dos petits carrers on encara es poden veure alguns gravats hebreus i fins i tot els orificis de les parets en què els jueus deixaven escrites les seves pregàries.
