French lighthouses and VERY BIG waves during stormy weather (+ description)
This video was taken on the 7th of december 2007 in Raz de Sein at the western tip of France, in Brittany, on a (very) stormy day.
Those lighthouses isolated in the open sea are/were called Hells because of the roughness of living conditions inside these isolated buildings, frequently harassed by the elements.
The first one seen in the video is Ar Men (The Rock in Breton), one of the best known lighthouses because of its isolated situation and the considerable difficulties its construction has presented (14 years were needed to build it !!), and the danger in evacuating its personnel.
Considered as one of the most challenging workplaces by the community of lighthouse keepers, it has been named The Hell of Hells.
It has been automated in 1990.
Later we can see Tévennec, a little known lighthouse situated on the east side of the Sein Island. It had such bad luck in store for its guardians that it was suspected to be baleful, or even haunted. Indeed, during stormy weather, some keepers reported that gloomy screams could be heard. Recently a cave was found in the rock on which Tévennec was built, that may explain the weird noises heard by the keepers.
Since nobody wanted to live on this rock anymore, this lighthouse was automated way before the others, in 1910.
Nowadays, general automation makes human presence useless aboard these ocean look-out posts. In 2004, Kéréon, the Palace of the sea, the last lived-in open sea lighthouse, definitely closed its doors over its magnificent woodwork and its compass rose made in ebony and mahogany.
The previous automated lighthouses were : Armen (1990), la Jument (1991), les Pierres Noires (1992), le Four (1993), la Vieille (1995).
As nobody is here to scour, fix and maintain those lighthouses anymore, they are slowly detoriating. If nothing is done they may collapse in the coming years, like it happened to an auxiliary tower at La Vieille lighthouse during a storm on the 10th of April 2008.

Anglet is a French commune in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of southwestern France. Anglet lies in the traditional province of Labourd of the Northern Basque Country while its inhabitants have traditionally spoken Gascon (Occitan). The inhabitants of the commune are known as Angloys or Angloyes
Anglet commune is part of the urban area of Bayonne-Anglet-Biarritz (B.A.B.) located south-west of the city and part of the Basque province of Labourd. The commune is 10% covered with pine forests, including those of Pignada, Lazaretto, and Chiberta. The sandy coast starts 200 km north at the Pointe de Grave on the shore of the estuary of the Gironde and ends in Anglet. It is punctuated by numerous seawalls cutting the shore. At Anglet the outline of the public maritime domain has been updated and a coastal reserve forty metres (130 feet) wide has been observed since 1978. With its many bays and inlets this area is a laboratory for monitoring techniques for studying coastal erosion. The Anglet coast is about 4.5 km long and has 11 beaches from north to south:

Based on discoveries made, the oldest land in Anglet dates back to prehistory (mid-Paleolithic) and Mousterian culture (from 100,000 to 35,000 BC). Postwar, urbanization continued because of the space available and attractive prices, unlike Bayonne or Biarritz. From 1970 to 1980 Anglet absorbed 70% of subdivision projects in the metropolitan area against 10% for Biarritz. The thirty glorious years spared no area of the commune, when only a few years past it had farmland, parks, ancient marshes (object of fervour a few centuries earlier).

Dover Castle is a medieval castle in Dover, Kent, England. It was founded in the 11th century and has been described as the Key to England due to its defensive significance throughout history. It is the largest castle in England.
The site has been in use for as many as 2000 years. On the vast grounds are the remains of a Roman lighthouse, which dates from AD 50 and may be the oldest standing building in Britain. Beside it lies the restored Saxon Church of St Mary in Castro.
The robust 12th-century Great Tower, with walls up to 7m thick, is a medieval warren filled with interactive exhibits and light-and-sound shows that take visitors back to the times of Henry II.
However the biggest draw of all is the network of secret wartime tunnels. The claustrophobic chalk-hewn passageways were first excavated during the Napoleonic Wars and then expanded to house a command post and hospital in WWII. The highly enjoyable 50-minute guided tour (every 20 minutes, included in the ticket price) tells the story of one of Britain's most famous wartime operations, code-named Dynamo, which was directed from here in 1940 and saw hundreds of thousands of men evacuated from the beaches at Dunkirk. The story is told in a very effective way, with video projected sharply onto the tunnel walls and sounds rumbling through the rock. At one point, the entire passageway is consumed in flames and at others visitors are plunged into complete darkness.

Dover Castle is a Scheduled Monument, which means it is a nationally important historic building and archaeological site that has been given protection against unauthorised change. It is also a Grade I listed building, and recognised as an internationally important structure. The castle, secret tunnels, and surrounding land are now owned by English Heritage and the site is a major tourist attraction. The Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports is officially head of the castle, in his conjoint position of Constable of Dover Castle, and the Deputy Constable has his residence in Constable's Gate.
The Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment Museum is located in the castle.
Between 2007 and 2009, English Heritage spent £2.45 million on recreating the castle's interior. According to figures released by the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions, nearly 350,000 people visited Dover Castle in 2010.

The Parc Floral de la Source is a French garden situated to the south of the River Loire, in the La Source neighbourhood of the town of Orléans, in the département of Loiret. The source of the Loiret river is at the centre of the park.The park has been awarded the status of Jardin remarquable by the French Ministry of Culture and the national council of parks and gardens
The Parc Floral de la Source extends over 35 ha (86.5 acres). It uses the natural contours of the site and consists of open spaces where the flora, fauna and minerals are juxtaposed. Its unique geographical position, between the wooded region of Sologne and the plains of the Loire Valley, gives it a particular relief. At its centre, after an underground course of several miles, is the resurgence of the Loiret. With the passing seasons, successive flowering continually renews the appearance of the grounds.
The plateau is covered by a semi-natural forest of hornbeams and oaks. It is joined to the plain by a hillside which corresponds to a former fluvial terrace of the Loire. Located on the plateau are animal enclosures for a variety of species, including alpaca and Ouessant sheep. The plain of the Loire valley is given over to floral and horticultural works. It includes the iris garden, the Miroir rose garden, the valley of perennials, the garden of the Source, the exotic butterfly glasshouse, the kitchen garden and the dahlia garden. Aviaries exhibit birds from several continents. This area also includes the source of Loiret.
The park has several gardens including collections of ferns and rhododendrons, a rose garden, tropical gardens, rockery and flowering grasses. The iris garden collection includes about 900 varieties, classified since 1996 as a specialist national collection. A children's playground is available and a train tours the site.
In 1967, the Floralies internationales d'Orléans attracted 2,300,000 visitors in six months. The global budget was more than one million francs. From April to October 1967, Orléans became the world capital of horticulture: 330 exhibitors, 700 producers from 11 countries, 13,000 m² of glasshouses specially constructed to house successive exhibitions on 35 hectares. Apart from horticulture, the Floralies included several attractions including a reconstruction of a Gaulois village, thus destroying an ancient temple.

Nous connaissons tous les plus célèbres : la Corse, La Sardaigne, Chypre, la Sicile ou Malte. La plupart des autres sont méconnues, secrètes.
Certaines sont de simples rochers. Les plus grandes mesurent quelques milliers d'hectares. Elles font partie des joyaux de la Méditerranée, non seulement pour leur grande beauté, mais aussi parce qu'elles abritent un patrimoine naturel exceptionnel.
Ce sont des lieux hors du commun, pour la plupart interdits d'accès au grand public...
