✔ EXPLORE:
Paimpont is situated in central Brittany, about 40 kilometres west of Rennes and a 2hour drive from Nantes, surrounded by the Paimpont Forest, which is part of the Forest of Broceliande - the last remaining part of the ancient forests that once covered Brittany.
Because of the age of the forest it has become associated with various legends including the claim that it was the home of King Arthur and the wizard Merlin. Several marked paths lead through the forest, to places with exotic names such as 'Merlin's Tomb', 'Merlin's spring' and the 'Valley of no Return' (where Merlin's sister trapped unfaithful young men, and the last place that Merlin himself was seen). If you search hard you could also perhaps find the 'fountain of eternal youth'.
Great place to add to your trip if your in Brittany or Near Nantes.

Brittany, France
Elves and dragons, maids and knights hiking and biking, oysters and crepes these are some of the surprises and pleasures Joseph discovers in Brittany, France the Celtic land of myths and legends.
As you would expect in a region enamored with its history and legends, Brittany is filled with historic towns in fact, there’s even an official classification Cities of Art and History that is approved by the Ministry of Culture. A sub-species is Small Towns of Character and it’s into that category that many of the region’s picture postcard towns fall. The cultural arts and crafts of Brittany are evidenced in the traditional dress including the more than 1,200 varities of headdresses worn by women at festivals. King Arthur and the Holy Grail is one of the world’s most enduring legends and it all began in Brittany. It is in the Forest of Broceliande that King Arthur received the sword Excalibur and the fairy Viviane fell in love with and imprisoned Merlin. The dense forest surrounds the lakeside village of Paimpont where more than 50 kilometers of hiking trails may lead to magical happenings!

La magia della Foresta di Brocéliande - The magic of the Brocéliande Forest
Music: Celtic Woman - The Voice + Celtic Music - Celtic Fairytale
The ancient and mysterious forest brocéliande is steeped in legends that revolve around the mythical figure of Merlin, King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.
The Breton cycle remains one of the most fascinating characters Merlin, the magician and clairvoyant whose mystery is interwoven with the legend of King Arthur.
It was the historic medieval Godfrey (Geoffrey) of Monmouth in the twelfth century. the first to give us our Merlin, taking its name from the Gaelic bard Myrddin, turning it into Merlin and inserting it in the Arthurian legends through three books: Prophetiae Merlini, the Vita Merlini, but especially the Historia Regum Britanniae.
Far from the image of the good magician represented by Walt Disney, the Merlin emerges from the mists of medieval is a dark character and calculating, the son of a virgin (or a nun) and a demon and saved from the fate of Antichrist just by a quick baptism.

Locations:
Paimpont forest, sometimes said to be the Arthurian Brocéliande, is in the French commune of Paimpont, near the city of Rennes in Brittany. As Brocéliande it had a reputation in the Medieval imagination as a place of magic and mystery. It is the setting of a number of adventures in Arthurian legend, notably Chrétien de Troyes's Yvain, the Knight of the Lion, and locals[citation needed] claim the tree in which the Lady of the Lake supposedly imprisoned Merlin can still be seen today.
Mont Saint-Michel (Saint Michael's Mount) is a rocky tidal island and a commune in Normandy, France. It is located approximately one kilometre (just over half a mile) off the country's north-western coast, at the mouth of the Couesnon River near Avranches. The population of the island is 41, as of 2006. The Mont-Saint-Michel and its bay are part of the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.
