The largest Greek island, mountainous Crete has stunning beaches, plenty of history and as much or little nightlife as you want. Party town Malia has many bars, clubs and restaurants on its Strip.
Along the coast is the capital Heraklion, a bustling city home to many Crete hotels on the beach, and a Venetian castle guarding its port. Its archaeological museum includes finds from the island’s Minoan era, while just inland are the Roman remains of Knossos.
Also boasting a Venetian castle is Rethymnon, a popular resort with a good number of Crete hotels with private pools on Booking.com. Loggerhead turtles nest in season on the sandy beaches here and at Chania, an important port with an attractive waterfront set against the backdrop of mountains.
On the other side of the island is Aghios Nikolaos, a small fishing town with a picturesque harbour. Just north is Elounda, a popular family resort, and offshore is Spinaloga island, inspiration behind the book ‘The Island’. Matala in the south has a bohemian vibe and intriguing cliff dwellings, while Paleokastro in the east borders Europe’s largest palm forest at Vai.
We could go on and on about magnificent Crete beaches, but whichever resort you choose, you can be almost guaranteed fantastic food and a good helping of sunshine.

A day trip from Sitia to the Toplou Monastery which contains the splendid icon The Greatness of God made in 1770 by the Cretan painter Kornanos, then to the Minoan archaeological site of Palaikastro / Roussolakos. In the afternoon, we visit the site of Itanos, a kind of end of the world that plunges into the abysses of the Aegean Sea.
Toplou Monastery is located at the northeastern tip of Crete, about 10 km east of Sitia and 6 km from Palaikastro, on the way to the palm forest of Vai.
Toplou Monastery or Monastery of Panagia Akrotiriani (Our Lady of Akrotiri) is one of the most important and beautiful monasteries in Crete.
The monastery with its imposing belfry, 33 metres high, stands in a harsh, almost desert landscape with giant wind turbines turning in the background; this is one of the first wind farms in Crete.
Toplou Monastery is impressive from afar, looking like a small fortress surrounded by a 10-metre-high wall.
How to get to Toplou Monastery

From Sitia to Toplou Monastery. The monastery is approximately 10 kilometres or 15 minutes’ drive away. The road is winding but easy.
From Agios Nikolaos, Heraklion, Rethymno and Chania to Toplou Monastery. Take the National Road to Sitia. The road as far as the Ierapetra crossroads is good, but the last bit up to Sitia is narrow and winding.
It should take you about 1 hour to drive to Toplou from Agios Nikolaos, 2 hours from Heraklion, 3.5 hours from Rethymno and 4.5 hours from Chania.

Join us as we take our rental car out for the day to explore the western parts of the island of Crete! We left Chania in the morning and drove to Elafonisi Beach. After exploring the beaches there we began to make our way up the coast to Phalasarna Beach, stopping somewhere in between for a late lunch. Thanks to our incredible driver, and my husband, for navigiating these narrow mountain roads!

Crete is a beautiful place to visit in the summer but it has its own beauty in the winter too, i shot this video to show some of the moments that i experienced being in Lasithi Psychro because of the snow and cold i couldn't make it to the Psychro Cave but we had an amazing time being there i can't find the words to explain it but you can watch it in the video.

Eastern Crete
A few snaps from around eastern Crete centred on Palekastro, venturing as south east as Zakros and as north east as the peninsula above Vai. Great place to visit with stunning waters and other scenery. The food is healthy if basic. If you self-cater take your culinary imagination with you! Overall a special place to relax, though not inexpensive.
