Sitia, a coastal town on Crete, situated in the northeastern part of the Lasithi region. It is accessible by boat and by plane and it’s an ideal base for exploring the surrounding area.
Sitia has all the necessary infrastructure to fully serve tourism, while keeping the authenticity through the selflessness of its people. I stayed 3 days and I visited Vai, Itanos, Piskokefalo, Exo Mouliana, Rixtis canyon and Moni Toplou.

The romantic pebbled cove of Kato Zakros is the ideal place for coming to unwind in the famous Cretan sun. Large crowds tend to stay clear of the beach, so you can enjoy the turquoise waters and beautiful rocky surroundings in relative peace. The cove is a great place for soaking up some of the local culture, with the ancient Minoan Palace along with the famous Gorge of the Deads both found in close proximity.

Crete | Xerokampos Beach. Xerokampos is a place of extraordinary natural beauty located in the southeast side of Crete, 47 Km south of Sitia and 69 Km east of Ierapetra.
It might take a bit of a driving to get there but the place's magnificence will amaze you. Xerocampos consists of many small coves with majestically coloured waters and wild scenery.
There are two roads to Xerokampos. The shorter road starts from Zakros. An alternative way is by following the longer route, connecting Ziros to Xerokampos, through mountains, silvery olive tree landscapes and old castles.
Once you start the final descent to Xerokampos beaches, you'll be enchanted by the magnificent view and the place's grandeur.
The main beach of Xerokampos is one of the well hidden treasures in Crete. It is known as Amatou beach and it has fine white sand and light blue waters.
There are no touristic facilities except some showers and few sunbeds. Make sure to bring your own snacks and umbrellas, there are a few tamarisks that provide some shade.
On the east side of the main beach close by one can discover many small beaches. Xerokampos offers everything that a person who appreciates natural beauty could ask for.

Wandelvakantie in Oost-Kreta (Kato Zakros 3 dagen op de E4)
Wandelvakantie in Oost-Kreta: Oost-Kreta is een wat minder bekend deel van het eiland. Over het algemeen heeft men weleens gehoord van de steden Agios Nikolaos, Sitia en Ierapetra en het wereldberoemde palmenstrand Vai. Maar wat veel mensen niet weten is dat er ook prachtige wandelroutes in Oost-Kreta zijn. Er loopt hier zelfs een deel van de Europese wandelroute E4 doorheen, wat eindigt in Kato Zakros.
Naast deze E4 wandelroute hebben we zelf nog een aantal wandelroutes uitgezet, die ideaal zijn voor een wandelvakantie in Oost-Kreta. Tijdens deze wandelvakantie van 2 tot 5 dagen verblijven we in een accommodatie in Kato Zakros aan de oostkust van Kreta. De appartementen in Kato Zakros reserveren wij vooraf. Het dorpje is rustig en hier kunt u aan het einde van de dag nog heerlijk nagenieten van de wandeltocht.
Zakros Kloof: Een van de wandelingen zal door de Zakros kloof gaan, ook wel de Dodenvallei of Dal der Doden genoemd. Deze nogal macabere naam wil niet zeggen dat het hier levensgevaarlijk is, maar het heeft met de geschiedenis te maken. In de Minoïsche tijd werden hier namelijk in de grotten de doden begraven. Er zijn niet veel intacte graven gevonden, de meesten graven waren al geplunderd voordat archeologen de site onderzochten. Tijdens de wandeling zijn deze grotten goed te zien. In de zomer is deze kloof niet moeilijk om te bewandelen, maar in de winter stroomt er water doorheen, waardoor stenen glad zijn en het moeilijk is om de voeten droog te houden.
Een aantal punten zullen tijdens de wandelvakantie in Oost-Kreta bezocht worden. We houden wel rekening met de wensen en het niveau van de wandelaars. Zo kan er naast de wandeling door de Zakros kloof ook bijvoorbeeld gewandeld worden door de kleine Chochlakies kloof. Of een wandeling naar de bergtop Traostalos, een belangrijk heiligdom voor de lokale bevolking. Aan de voet van de berg Traostalos ligt de Pelekita grot op een hoogte van 100 meter. De Pelekita grot behoort tot een van de grotere grotten op Kreta met een lengte van 310 meter.
Als u een dag geen zin heeft om te wandelen, kunt ontspannen op het strand van Kato Zakros. Dit strand in Zuidoost-Kreta heeft het certificaat ‘Blue Flag’ toegekend gekregen, dankzij de schone omgeving en de goede kwaliteit van het zeewater. Ook zijn er in Zakros een paar musea die u kunt bezoeken, om zo meer een inzicht te krijgen in de omgeving, geschiedenis en traditie. Een bezoek aan het palmenstrand Vai of de stad Sitia behoort ook tot de mogelijkheden.
Het Minoïsche paleis van Kato Zakros: In 1961 is in Zakros is een van de vier Minoïsche paleizen van Kreta deels opgegraven. Het paleis deed dienst als belangrijk vlootstation aan de oostkust. Rond 1600 voor Christus lag hier de grootste vloot uit die periode. De beschermde haven was vanuit strategisch oogpunt belangrijk voor de handel naar het oosten, met name naar Egypte. Er wordt hier nog steeds gegraven door archeologen, want het paleis is nog niet volledig uitgegraven. Losse vondsten uit de Minoïsche tijd zijn tentoongesteld in het archeologisch museum van Heraklion.
Sitia Kreta: Sitia is de meest oostelijke stad aan de noordkust van Kreta. De stad heeft een haven met veerbootdiensten naar Piraeus, Santorini, Rhodos en in de zomer meerdere diensten naar diverse andere eilanden. Er is een Venetiaans kasteel. De belangrijkste bron van inkomsten voor de lokale bevolking, is de olijfolie van hoge kwaliteit. Daarnaast worden er in de omgeving van Sitia veel druiven verbouwd om wijn te produceren. Langs de waterkant is een gezellige boulevard met meerdere restaurants en koffietenten.
Het palmenstrand Vai: Ongeveer 20km ten oosten van Sitia en aan de oostkust van Kreta ligt het palmenstrand Vai. Het strand is bekend vanwege de palmen die er groeien, de Kretenzische dadelpalm. De palmen staan in groepen bij elkaar en geven het zandstrand een tropische uitstraling. Dit grote palmenwoud zou in de middeleeuwen zijn ontstaan doordat Arabische zeerovers de pitten van de meegebrachte dadels op het strand uitspuwden. Het strand is een toeristische trekpleister.
