Monastery of St. George Selinari Crete
Photos I shot of St. George Selinari Monastery in Crete set to an Indian cut called Mumbai Mood (I bet George Harrison would dig this tune—sounds like something from Revolver).
The male monastery of Saint George Selinaris is built in the heart of the gorge Selinari, near Vrachasi village and Neapolis. Next to the monastery passes the National Road connecting Heraklion to Agios Nikolaos, which is the main reason why Selinaris receives many visitors daily. For the Cretans it is considered bad luck to cross the canyon without stopping at St. George. This has prevailed since the past, when the travellers stopped here to rest with their animals.
According to tradition, a monk from Rhodes, named Nikolaos, was led by God to a place where he found the icon of St. George and thus he built a church. Nikolaos lived at Selinari till his death, when he was buried in a small cave at the top of Anavlohos mount, which was carved by him. Several years after his death, when a boat from Rhodes visited Crete, the sailors were led by a shining star to the tomb of Nikolaos. They understood that it was a divine hint and transferred his bones to Rhodes. Anavlohos cave is located on the east side of the gorge, just opposite the monastery, and you can locate the exact position by looking up the gorge walls and see a big cross. The cave is accessible on foot, but climbing the steep path requires good physical condition.
Finally, during the Ottoman Era, the Turks probably tried to destroy the monastery, as it is evidenced by the three bullets that have stuck in the old icon of Saint George, which Is also considered miraculous.
It is worth stopping at the monastery and admiring the beauty of the lush canyon and cool off at the local spring. The monks are very friendly and ready to tell you the history of the monastery. The main body of the central church is modern, while the chapel of St. George (the initial temple built by Nikolaos) has also modern wall paintings. Here also operates a modern nursing home that has been built on the ruins of the old cells of the monastery.

Palaiokastro (Crete)
In this video i have tried to show you the Palaiokastro which is located in Crete and also the beautiful beach of Palaiokastro.
The Venetian fortress of Palaiokastro is located 9 km west of Heraklion, on the west side of Heraklion Bay. Today, only a part of the walls of the triangular fort remains alive. The fort was built on a big tall rock, near which passes the highway of Heraklion - Chania.
In 1204, when the Genoese Pescatore conquered Crete, he built 14 forts in order to protect it. Among them was the fort of Palaiokastro, which could protect the bay of Heraklion and make the landing of enemy on the nearby shores very difficult. The Genoveses thought that this castle was very important, thus when the Venetians managed to conquer Crete, they kept only this castle. Later, in 1211, they had to leave the island.
Fortress Palaiokastro is one of the most important medieval monuments of the island. In a similar position existed oldest fortress built by pirate Enrico Pescatore, immediately after the conquest of Crete by the Genoese in the early 13th century. The Venetian fortress Palaiokastro built later is an integral element of the fortress fortifications of Candia and rebuilt when it seemed the inability of the fortress of Candia, effectively prevent the penetration of enemy ships in the adjacent bay fraskia. Fortress Palaiokastrou begun in 1573, was completed in 1595 and was based on a draft prepared based instruction Commander Latino Orsini. The fort is a triangular shape adopted by the natural topography of the location and the steepness of the rock was met with the overshoot of the walls that were parallel to the sea.
The impressive and well preserved today arched entrance of the fort stood on the south side and is partially carved into the rock. As shown in the map of the report produced later by Francesco Basilicata to the Venetian authorities inside the fortress created three uneven squares of the Up, the Medium and Low Square in order to ensure adequate space and flat area that would meet the needs of the defenders and stood barracks, garrison headquarters, church, Purpose, arms depots and water tanks. The walls of the fort still impressed with the diligence of the construction of massive walls and impeccable details. In the northeast corner there are the reliefs of the winged lion of St. Mark and the emblems of the era officials. In the report mentioned the Venetian Francesco Basilicata reveals the basic military operation of the fortress, the shot of the gun reaches to the Salty, cape beach of the Bridge and also intersects with the shot of the rules of the city of Candia, although far. Fortress is capable, with moderate activity, to withstand any attack and to effectively protect ships that would carry help, because there is no good anchorage. That passage is easy to appreciate the enormous importance of the fortress Palaiokastro and the key role it played during the 20 year siege of Candia to the Ottomans (1645-1669), which is recorded as the longest siege in world military history. Palaiokastro The beach is still preserved in excellent condition a lime of the same era, and is known from the design of Basilicata, the which is one of the best examples of such structures throughout the island. At the beginning of the Venetian Era, the castle lost its original importance because the Bay of Heraklion could be now protected by the Venetian ships. But when Venice was threatened by the presence of the Ottomans, the castle regained its value. Thus, during the years 1573-1595 they rebuilt the old castle, just like many other castles throughout the island. The castles of the Bay were then able to control the entire region, since the cannon shots from Palaiokastro crossed with the shots from the ramparts of St Andrew (Heraklion Walls).
The main gate was located on the south edge of the castle and lead to the lower square, which had many small rooms. In one of them you can still see a small church dedicated to Agios Markos (celebr. on Easter Tuesday), which was built with the ruins of the castle. North of the castle, there was an armory with solid and very strong walls. Right next to it was a water tank. Upon entering, there was a staircase leading to the second level, where the barracks were. Finally, the upper level hosted the church of the castle. On the northeast corner of the castle you could see the winged lion of St. Mark, the emblem of Venice. The fort was under Venetian occupation until the last years of the siege of Candia that finally “fell” in 1669. The Ottomans gave great importance to the occupation of the castle, so that they could land on the shores of Heraklion Bay safely. Thus, when the ships of Venice were still in Chania, the Turks surrounded the fort, which was surrendered. Then the Turks destroyed it in order to prevent the enemies from using it.

Touring Crete - Inside the Chrysoskalitissa Monastery, Elafonisi
Inside the historic Chrysoskalitissa Monastery.
Elafonisi isn't just about the beautiful beaches, this historic monastery is worth visiting while en route to the famous beach destination of Elafonisi. Its history was born from divine measures, according to local legend, with evidence that it was the Holy Virgin Mother herself that chose the site onto which to build this monastery.
The island of Crete has a long and rugged history, and Chrysoskalitissa is no different. Built, destroyed, and rebuilt again only to face destruction and disrepair at various points in history, the structure stands high today as a memorial to the island's past.
When on travel, it's always enjoyable to learn about a country's or a region's past in between the beaches, food, and good life - this monastery is at a convenient stopping point on the road to Elafonisi for those that wish to step back in time a bit and appreciate some culture and history.
Ah yeah.
Enjoy.

Scenes around Crete in 1961 (Part 2/2)
In 1961, a boat load of Cretans who lived in the U.S. converged upon New York City and took the Queen Frederika to Crete. There, they visited many sites in their motherland.
Anthony Sooklaris brilliantly shot and edited this very interesting video of the life and times of that event, but also a glimpse at what life was like in Crete in 1961.
School girls wear uniformed dresses, and boys wear their school caps which resemble military officer's caps, but actually are standard issue for school boys.
Please leave me a comment and let me know how your life may relate to this video.
Furthermore, if you have any information of the scenes that we are seeing, please share it in a comment. Some of the towns and villages are documented in the form of signs, but let me know if you see and recognize landmarks, villages, people, etc. This is amazing video that begs to know more!
From Teiher: This is the part of your visit to Lassithi. At first you show us St. George Selinari, then I saw the central square in Neapolis and the the lake of Aghios Nikolaos with the small bridge. After that, I see some windmills that used to pump water on the Oropedio Lassithiou and then the entrance of the Gouverniotissa monastery as you were on your way back to Heraklion.
