Top 10 Things to Do in Rhodes Island, Greece

Rhodes is a Greek island steeped in history, there is much to see here beyond the beaches.
We start our tour of the island in Rhodes Old Town. Most of what you’ll see in Rhodes Town was constructed in the 14th century by the Knights of St. John, who occupied the island for 200 years.
From the Palace of the Grand Master, to Hippocrates Square, the many medieval gates, The Colossus of Rhodes, Rhodes Aquarium Museum and the Acropolis of Rhodes.
After a full day of sightseeing, we head to Mimakos Taverna for a night of traditional food and dancing. After dinner comes the entertainment, where you’ll get to experience some traditional Greek songs and dances performed by a local dance troupe.
Next up we head south to Kolymbia to visit the Santa Maria Monastery where you get epic views of the island and 7 Springs, a lush forest that attracts nature lovers with the peaceful sound of running water.
Next we head westward, across the island to the ancient site of Kamiros. Kamiros is worth a visit if you’re history buff like me.
Profitis Ilias is the second highest mountain in Rhodes. People come to enjoy the fresh mountain air and beautiful scenery.
Just south there is a famous wine town called Ebonas. We visited three amazing wineries!
Continuing our drive south along the western coast we’re headed to Monolithos Castle for some epic views over the island. You can climb up to the castle to get gorgeous views of the sea, back-dropped by the mountainous terrain and the village of Monolithos in the distance.
Down the western coast we cruise towards a beach like no other in Greece, Prasonisi beach.
Back on the east coast we head to Lindos to see the impressive Ancient Acropolis towering over the town. While it’s possible to head up to the Acropolis on foot, we opted for the donkey ride for the steep ascent.
So there you have my list of top 10 things to do in Rhodes Island. The island is big enough to keep you busy for at least a few days, if not more.

Prophet Elias - The Graves of the Venizelos Family
The church of Profitis Elias (Prophet Elias) is situated at the position Froudia and was built during the Venetian period.
Initially, only the smaller south aisle of the church was built, dedicated to Prophet Elisaios.
During the 16th century, the larger church of Prophet Elias was added after the construction of an arched opening on the original north wall.
In 1897 the headquarters of the revolution commanders was established there. (These were El. Venizelos, Nik. Pistolakis, Ant. Sifakas, G. Mylonogiannis, Char. Papathatkis, K. Foumis and G. Kotzambasis). The church was destroyed during the bombing attacks of the Great Powers and was later reconstructed.
In February 1887 the fleets of the “protecting” Powers began bombing the rebels’ positions.
One of the shells broke the pole where the Greek flag was flying. At once Spyros Kagialethakis stood up on the parapet holding the flag and making his own body a flag-pole.
Eleftherios Venizelos (1864-1936) was a Cretan politician who fought for independence from the Turks and later for the union with Greece. He was prime minister of Greece several times, and one of the most important Greek statesmen, until the monarchists forced his resignation and sent him into exile in France. He died in exile in 1936.

Antiparos: at the Heart of the Cyclades
A short video shot during our summer holidays in one of the hidden treasures of the Aegean sea, the island of Antiparos.
Shot with Nikon D5200 and a handheld stabilizer. Unfortunately the strong winds of the Aegean where not so kind, but we found the results rewarding!
The video features shots from:
The castle of Antiparos, a mid-15th century Venetian castle with continuous houses built as the defensive perimeter.
The cave of Antiparos, one of the most beautiful and mysterious caves in the world. At the entrance there’s a stalagmite considered the oldest in Europe. Inside there are inscriptions from various visitors through the centuries.
Livadi and Monastiria, two beaches on the West side of the island. Especially Monastiria is quite hidden and difficult to access.
Kato & Epano Fyra islets, two small islands north of Antiparos where you go by swimming (or walking in the water) from the Camping beach.
Profitis Ilias, the highest peak in Antiparos with a stunning view of the Aegean and the Cyclades.
Despotiko, a small island southwest of Antiparos, almost exactly in the center of the Cyclades and of great archeological importance. There lie the remains of an ancient sanctuary dedicated to god Apollo.
