10 Things to do in Santiago de Compostela
Santiago de Compostela is not just the final point of the Camino de Santiago, it is a fantastic place to explore, wandering around its alleys and stone-paved streets. As some Galicians say, Santiago is not a city, it is a 'big village'. The city population is just around the 100,000 mark but with nearly 50,000 students settling there for the academic year and thousands of pilgrims walking into town every year.
I think Santiago is a great city but I'm obviously biased. I lived in Santiago (or 'Compostela') for four years while studying at the city's University (one of the oldest in the world by the way.
10 things to do in Santiago de Compostela:
1-Cathedral
If you have walked all the way to Santiago de Compostela, your first stop is likely to be the Praza do Obradoiro with its imposing Cathedral, where the remains of Saint James are (allegedly) buried. The cathedral is Santiago's most famous building with a Romanesque structure and later Gothic and Baroque elements. At the Cathedral, check out the Pórtico da Gloria (the original Romanesque porch entrance by Mestre Mateo), the Botafumeiro (its giant thurible) and, if you are not scared of heights, ask to walk up to the Cathedral's rooftop to enjoy fantastic panoramic views of Santiago.
2-The Old Town
Santiago is divided in two main districts: the Old Town (Zona Vella) and the New Town (Zona Nova).
The Old Town with is winding granite streets, arches, squares and monuments has been an UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. Here you will find not only Romanesque and baroque churches, museums and some of the oldest University buildings but also many cosy cafes, traditional and contemporary restaurants, interesting shops and some of the best nightlife too!
3-Alameda Park
Take a breather at the Alameda, Santiago's most emblematic green space. Go for a stroll along the Paseo da Ferradura, get a nice tree-framed view of the Cathedral, sit by the statue of writer Valle Inclán or take a picture with the statue of 'As Marías', the two Fandiño sisters dressed in their colourful outfits. The sisters used to go for a walk in the Alameda every day at 2 o'clock on the dot. The Alameda park is also central point to many celebrations in Santiago's busy festival calendar.
4-'De Viños' -- Wine trail
Rúa do Franco goes all the way to the Obradoiro Square and takes its name after the French pilgrims that used to follow this street to get to the Cathedral. With adjacent Raíña, this is the most famous street to go out for a few drinks with friends. Many bars and restaurants along the Franco display their octopus, shellfish and other Galician delicacies on their windows (vegetarians beware!) and most offer a free bite with each drink: croquettes, tortilla or even tiger filet (not really tiger meat, by the way).
5-Museo das Peregrinacións
After walking to Santiago as a pilgrim, you should probably visit this museum, dedicated to the pilgrimage.
6-San Domingos de Bonaval Park
'Bonaval' for short, is another popular park in Santiago de Compostela. Bonaval sits on the grounds of a Dominican convent's old cemetery and has been re-invented into a secluded public green space by Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza. Next to Bonaval you'll find two of Santiago's best museums: the CGAC (Galician Contemporary Art Centre) in a modern building also by Siza and the Museum of the Galician People (Museo do Pobo Galego) in the former convent.
7-Mercado de Abastos
9-Festas
Festas da Ascensión in May and Festas do Apóstolo in July are the main celebrations in Santiago, with outdoor concerts and many other events taking place, some of them free of charge. However, there are many more festivals in and around the different neighbourhoods in Santiago.
10-Try octopus
You can't leave Santiago (or Galicia) without trying the land's most iconic dish: octopus. The Galicians call it octopus fair style ('pulpo á feira') as it used to be a dish eaten on market day; while Spaniards like to call it octopus Galician style.

In this video I walk from Pamplona to Puente la Reina, a Roman city. 24K. My body is feeling stronger but the heat is relentless. Spain is having record breaking heat and pilgrims are suffering.
I woke up early in the dark and headed out to get as much cool weather as possible. The trek across was so beautiful. First misty fields that had been harvested, sunflower fields that were sleeping, snails clinging to strands of grass, then up to the top of Alto del Perdon to see the beautiful view, along with huge wind turbines and the famous metal pilgrim sculptures. On the way to Puente La Reina I picked sweet grapes along the way that quenched my thirst.
When I arrived into Puente la Reina, I was amazed at the narrow cobblestone paths and gothic Roman walls , churches and buildings. After checking into the albergue 5€ across from the bell tower I went to dinner and had pimiento peppers padron ,roasted with fresh olive oil and garlic. Then I prepared for the next day and crashed. Manila, Philippines - Then and Now
As the title implies, this is all about comparisons comparisons of past and present through the use of photographs, particularly of (selected) streets, structures, and plazas (and/or their vicinities) in Manila, more specifically in Binondo, Santa Cruz, and Intramuros.
Although much care and effort were given in matching the vantage point and composition of the new photographs with those of the old ones, getting an exact match was near impossible (or in some cases, down right impossible) due to several factors, e.g., cameras used and accessibility of locations.
Nevertheless, I had tons of fun doing this series even if I had to touch and step on rat feces and climb up dizzying heights (via a ridiculously steep ladder) to reach the top of Binondo Churchs bell tower (that of Santa Cruz church is a whole lot tidier but its height was quite similar) even if I had to travel several kilometers on foot (no less than ten kilometers is my estimate, Im no athlete you know) even if it caused my sweat to turn to fine grains of salt under the heat of the sun even if it caused my legs to hurt for several days afterwards in spite of all those, it has become one of the most exciting and unforgettable experiences/journeys Ive had in my entire life.

Candanchú, in the Aragón Valley and first stage of the Camino de Santiago in Aragon. It is located next to the border of France and is a place where nature merges with history, art, culture and sports.

One of the most beautiful villages of the Catalan Pyrenees, walking through its streets transports us to the medieval era.
17. Saint-Lizier
Without reaching 1500 inhabitants, this French commune has two cathedrals: Saint-Lizier and Notre-Dame-de-la-Sède, both Romanesque. You can also visit an eighteenth century pharmacy or the Palace of Bishops.
16. Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges
This Occitan town is just over 200 inhabitants. However, it has a Romanesque Cathedral World Heritage Site and the remains of the Roman villa of Lugdunum Convenarum.
15. Artajona
Surrounded by 'El Cerco' (the wall of the eleventh century), this town of Navarre has places of interest such as its 18th century palaces, the church of San Pedro or the Basilica of Our Lady of Jerusalem.
14. Mirepoix
On the other side of the border you can also find beautiful villages such as Mirepoix, with its wooden houses and its Gothic cathedral whose spire measures 60 meters.
13. Aïnhoa
In addition to a woman's name, Ainhoa is one of the most beautiful villages in France, with its white Basque-style houses, its church, its pediment and the discoidal steles of its cemetery.
12. Llívia
This enclave of the province of Gerona in the French department of Pyrenees Orientales is not only a geographical curiosity, but also houses places such as the oldest pharmacy in Spain, the fifteenth century and now converted into a museum, or its Gothic church.
11. Puente la Reina
In addition to the Romanesque bridge that gives it its name, this Navarrese town known in Basque as Gares also has numerous churches and convents.
10. Ordino
That Andorra la Vella is more than shopping is shown by landscapes such as Ordino, with its ancestral homes and the mural paintings of the church of Sant Martí de la Cortinada.
