Zugarramurdi is a town and municipality located in the province and autonomous community of Navarre in northern Spain. It passed into history as the setting of alleged occult activity featured in the infamous Basque witch trials held in Logroño in the seventeenth century. The town is home to the Basque witch museum and the Cuevas de las Brujas . Every year, spectacular fires are lit in the caves near Zugarramurdi for the celebration of the ‘day of the witch’ on the summer solstice.

Gaztelugatxe is an islet on the coast of Biscay belonging to the municipality of Bermeo, Basque Country . It is connected to the mainland by a man-made bridge. On top of the island stands a hermitage , dedicated to John the Baptist, that dates from the 10th century, although discoveries indicate that the date might be the 9th century. With another small neighboring island, Aketx, they form a protected biotope that extends from the town of Bakio until Cape Matxitxako, on the Bay of Biscay.

Camino del Baztán, 1:Bayona a Ezpeleta. Camino de Santiago.

De Bayona parten tres itinerarios distintos del Camino de Santiago: el del Norte, el baztanés y otro que se dirige a Saint Jean Pied de Port. Nosotros elegimos en esta ocasión la ruta que unía la capital del Reino de Navarra, Pamplona, con Bayona, su principal puerto marítimo. Los primeros 14 kilómetros son un paseo fluvial por el Nive hasta Uztaritze, donde destaca el castillo Lota, construido por un indiano en el siglo XIX y algunas casas de los siglos XVI y XVII. A partir de Uztaritze tenemos subidas y bajadas por el monte hasta empezar un suave descenso hacia Ezpeleta. Tenemos vistas a todo el valle. A nuestra derecha veremos el impresionante monte Larhune. Pasamos un pequeño puente románico para acceder a Ezpeleta, donde finalizamos nuestra primera etapa. Llama la atención los pimientos colgados de las casas labortanas. Es su producto estrella y hay que probarlo.

Camino del Baztán, 4: Berroeta a Olague. Camino de Santiago.

Estamos ante una etapa de montaña en la que atravesamos un hayedo espectacular durante varios kilómetros, caminamos por la antigua calzada medieval a la vez que cambiamos de valle. Dejamos atrás el Baztán y entramos en el valle de Ultzama/Ulzama por los rasos de Belate, por el Summo Portu de Belate. Aquí encontraremos menhires y túmulos. Bastante antes de coronar este puerto pasamos por la Venta de San Blas, punto en el que hubo antiguamente un hospital de peregrinos. Y una vez que empezamos a bajar por el nuevo valle de Ultzama encontramos el monasterio de Belate, que también fue hospital de peregrinos ya en el siglo XIII. Sólo se mantiene su iglesia románica. Un nuevo hayedo nos lleva hacia Lantz y de aquí hasta Olague.
