EXPLORING ANCIENT HERMITAGE FROM GAME OF THRONES | GAZTELUGATXE, SPAIN
I love having my expectations blown away. I had seen some photos of Gaztelugatxe and couldn't believe something like this could be built. A tiny stone church on the top of an island mountain, with a zigzagging bridge connecting it to the northern coast of Spain. It seemed like a scene from a movie... or maybe season 7 episode 4 of an HBO hit series called Game of Thrones. Yeah, maybe more like that. DRAGONSTONE!
Gaztelugatxe is an islet (small island) on the coast of the Spanish province of Biscay in Basque Country. At it's peak, there is a hermitage called San Juan de Gaztelugatxe which was build to honour John the Baptist. This church is 1000 years old, and with its winding staircase, makes you feel you're approaching a medieval castle. Exploring it was a highlight of my travel life. We arrived to see an amazing sunrise beginning to peek over the coast. We had it to ourselves at this time, and recommend you visit then too.
Mariannela and I made this travel vlog earlier this year during our 1 month road trip through northern Spain. We grabbed a camper van from Indie Campers, and spent the majority of our time in Basque Country, and all the videos we made are a bit of a different style as the others. We also had a lot of fun with the MAVIC PRO drone from DJI. Some of the best views I've seen yet. This place was unbelievable.
Also, I came across a lot of great videos of Basque Country through my friends Alex and Marko Ayling from the Vagabrothers. Make sure to check them out as well.
If you're a fan of urbex or exploring abandoned places, this needs to be on your bucket list.

Must See Parts of Spain: Basque Country & Dragonstone | 4K
Must see stops in the Basque Country and Spain! We explored San Sebastian, hiked the San Juan de Gaztelugatxe (Dragonstone Castle location in Game of Thrones @ 3:05 in the video), enjoyed the views at Flysch in Zumaia, went for a hike up Ulia Mountain, ate endless Pintxos, and rented a car to travel along the coast to see the sights and the local towns.

TOP TRAVEL TIPS:
*If you want to see the coastline, a car is needed. I only rented a car for one day which was enough to see the towns and sights along the coast between San Sebastian and Bilbao.
*A car is not recommended for getting around Spain or even travelling in and out of San Sebastian. The train station is in the downtown and is very easy to get to.
*We did got to Bilbao and wish we had skipped it. The smaller towns have way more to offer for a tourists.
*San Sebastian is a small city with so much to do. Three nights there is a must!
*The hike on Ulia Mountain leads to another town- Pasaia. We were too lazy and ran out of town, but in the summer with more daylight this would be a scenic hike.
*Flysch and San Juan de Gaztelugatxe are very close to each other and make for a great quick road trip. Very worth it, both are amazing sites!
The trip included:
(0:00) Intro (San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, Ulia Mountain, Flysch, View of San Sebastian, Flysch, Ulia Mountain, San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, Sunset at San Sebastian from the Londres Hotel).
(0:26) Hike along the coastline of Ulia Mountain- accessable from Zurriola Beach. Good hiking info here:
(1:09) San Sebastian- view from our hotel and exploring the town
(1:41) Eating foot at La Cuchara de San Telmo
(1:59) Quick stop in Getaria
(2:08) Exploring Flysch in Zumaia
(3:03) Hiking to the top of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe- Used in season 7 of Game of Thrones as the location of Dragonstone (the castle on top is of course computer generated)

• Gaztelugatxe is an islet on the coast of Biscay belonging to the municipality of Bermeo, Basque Country (Spain). It is connected to the mainland by a man-made bridge. On top of the island stands a hermitage (named Gaztelugatxeko Doniene in Basque; San Juan de Gaztelugatxe in Spanish), dedicated to John the Baptist, that dates from the 10th century, although discoveries indicate that the date might be the 9th century. With another small neighboring island, Aketx, they form a protected biotope that extends from the town of Bakio until Cape Matxitxako, on the Bay of Biscay.
• Gaztelugatxe is a natural protected area. Admission is free, but on some dates you need to book in advance (bizkaia.eus/gaztelugatxe).
• The island of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe looks like it’s straight from a movie set. So it shouldn’t be any surprise that it was selected as a filming location for the HBO series, Game of Thrones. But whether you are a fan of the series or not, San Juan de Gaztelugatxe will dazzle you with its raw beauty.
Many will recognize San Juan de Gaztelugatxe as the island fortress of “Dragonstone” from season 7 of Game of Thrones, however, its real name can be translated as “castle rock” from Basque (“gaztelu” = castle + “aitz” = rock).
• If you are coming from Bilbao, you need to take 2 buses that will drop you just in front of it, on the carpark. However, on week-ends only the first bus to Biquao is running, so you’ll have to walk a few kilometres to get there. It’s around 6 kilometres but it is not that bad as the view is dazzling, and totally worth it. I also recommend coming as early as you can as it can get very crowded.

Bermeo, Northern Spain. 5th August 2016
In August 2016, we decided to take a trip to the Basque Country coast, located in northern Spain.
The climate in the south of Spain is far too extreme for us to go in August and the beaches there are massively overcrowded, so instead we decided to go to the north towards the green Atlantic coast where temperatures are significantly cooler.
The scenery at 43 North is far more enjoyable to look at compared to what's offered down south and the Atlantic coast is an amazing place to be with the nearby Cantabrian Mountains.
Northern Spain is still relatively undiscovered in the foreign tourism industry, and the area around Bermeo contains a well-known clifftop monastery - San Juan de Gaztelugatxe - one of the major landmarks along the northern coast.
To get there, we had to take a two-day drive from the UK by catching the 03:20 ferry on 04/08 from Dover, followed by a long and uneventful drive unlike no other, taking the slow route through the French countryside before arriving at Bordeaux at 8:30pm to spend the night there.
At 1:00pm on 05/08 we arrived into a modest flat in the heart of the small town of Bermeo, located to the east of the largest city in the Basque Country, Bilbao.
The plan for July 2017 was to move on to Asturias, located further down the northern coast before the travel plans changed in April to two parts of the Cornish coast. However, Asturias and Cantabria are still places of interest for the future.

San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, Spain | Stepping Stone
San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is an islet on the coast of Biscay belonging to the municipality of Bermeo, in Basque Country, Spain. It is connected to the mainland by a man-made bridge. On the top of the island stand a hermitage the named called Gaztellugatexek Doniene ins Basque, dedicated to John the Baptist, that date from the 10th century, although discoveries indicates that the date might be the 9th century. The hermitage is accessed by a narrow path, crossing the solid stone bridge, and going up 237 steps, nobody really knows how many exactly According to legend, after the slightly strenuous climb to the top of the crag one should ring the bell three times and make a wish. The best season to visit are spring and autumn, to enjoy the peace of the setting, as summer s are typically crowded. Etymologically the word Gaztelugatxe comes from the Baxque gaztelu = castel and aitz = rock or crag, forming crag of the castle. Another possible translation of gatxe is bad this would means bad castle.
The small church, which is usually closed, dates from the 10th century and seems to have come from the Knights Templar. In the year 1053 it was donated, by don Inigo Lopez Lord of Biscay, to the monastery of San Juan de la Pena Near Jaca in Huesca. Medieval burials from the night and twelfth centuries have been found on the esplanade and in the hermitage. In 1593 it was attacked and sacked by Francis Drake. Among other incidents, it has caught fire several times. On November 10. 1978, it was destroyed in one such fire. Tow years later, on June 24, 1980 it was re-inaugurated. The hermitage belongs to the parish of San Pelayo in Bakio. the hermitage also houses votive offerings from sailors who survived shipwrecks. First Image Credit Daniel Zudaire Araiz
